Future of mmorpg combat! what do you want

been thinking about the progression of the combat system in mmorpgs, and have coem to realise that only now are we seeing abit of variation on the way combat owrks in mmorpgs. So i thought it be interesting to have a poll and a discussion on the current offered combat types featured in mmos and what mmo fans want from future mmos as a realistic combat system (no vr suits and silly helmet discussion). so to start off i decided to list the 3 main groups of mmo combat. Twitch based, charge based and hybrids of the two.

first up twitch based combat is combat that usually involves aiming with the mouse and controlling with the keyboard, be it flying a ship dogfight style or swinging a sword and aiming bows fps style. Twitch based combat in an mmo is the new thing at the moment with some current exampels existing and other set to release in the future, for those unfamiliar with what twitch based combat in an mmorpg is then here are some examples of footage taken from games.

up first mortal online

http://www.youtube.com/user/Gigamo#p/u/1/RWSL-dzP0TM

next we have darkfall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvVRMuQrW8Y

and finally infinity

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3nfVTBcG18

next we have the charge based mmos, which usually involve complete control from the mouse and clicking time based attacks here are examples

up first we have eve online

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTk8VOjYVCU&feature=related

next we have world of warcraft

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYX2jpLsHL0

and finally archeage

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrsU2xulh-8

next we have the hybrid combat mmos, these take soemthing from both twitch based and charge based mmos in a sort of mish mash.

up first we have age of conan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TOd42v45LU

next we have tera

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7tTkQHhy6s

what i want to know is which combat system do you want in your future mmos? which do oyu prefer to play or would prefer to paly?

there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.

I voted Hybrid, definately. (I also don't think AoC is part of this, or if it is its very minimal, unlike Tera.)

Twitch is great, but even a slight bit of lag can ruin a game, so this alone ruins twitch.

Tab Targeting like I call it (WoW, Lotro etc.) are boring. It's like watching a game, not really playing it. You press a button and watch your character do all the work, it was fun once, but not now.

Don't get my wrong, I still like all three, and I am looking forward to games that use all three combat types seperately, but I prefer the hybrid version the best, by a clear mile, hands down, get my point? I like it haha :P

    Edit:

I usually play World of Warcraft mainly, maybe this is why I'm getting bored of this type of combat?

And I'm eagerly awaiting Star Wars: The Old Republic (Yeah, I know its the same boring combat, but thats not what I'm looking forward to about this game.) The Secret World (As much of the hybrid as Age of Conan I suppose.) Arche Age, Guild Wars 2 and Tera.

So out of those I'm looking forward to only one, Tera, (Or two if you include Secret World) actually use the combat system I prefer, which is sad really. All the others use boring old combat systems. (I don't consider Guild Wars 2 dodge feature anything special, I don't think it'll change combat that much.)

i tried aoc which is a hybrid, since sprinting and running aronud an oppoennt is actually a tactical advantage in pvp however timed attacks work once you have them close infront of oyu regardless of if they run they still take damage, i thoguh it felt really odd as a combat system. Tera has intrigued me but the anime styling of korean mmos really doenst appeal to me. I am also fearful fo korean mmos due to being notorious for severe grinding but thats something completly different

Darkfall were on the right track with their twitch realtime based combat, other devlopers should sit up and take note and improve on this angle of combat for MMO's, though there always be a crowd who prefer a slower more controled form a combat like TOR is keeping too.

  • deathshrouddeathshroud Member Posts: 1,366

yea but for me tor combat system feels nothing like i want a starwars game to feel like, its more suited to soemthing like star trek than an action packed fantasy series of movies that should really have a more visceral and twitch based aproach.

i dont think its so much as combat that is missing..game play goes along way and all the other things that follow

Ah, well if you put Age of Conan's combat like that then yeah, I agree with that. One of the only things I liked about the game was the combat actually, chosing which way to strike etc, was fun.

I was also worried about Tera for the same two reasons.

But I've heard the western company that are in control of the game for us have been hard at work not just stick loads of quests in there (Aion and all other asian games translated to western markets) but they are also trying to make them really fun and interesting, and they are taking a very long time doing it. The games been released in asia for nearly a year now, and won't be released in western markets for almost eight months, which should mean they are focusing hard on making it great. Also the political system will be interesting, and the proffessions look good.

I'm usually one for stylised (I think thats right?) graphics like WoW, Star Wars, Firefall and I normally hate "realistic" graphics like Rift, Age of Conan etc, and I also hate "asian realistic" graphics, which are usually just stupidly over the top, and Tera is no different. So I'm hoping I can get past this, as its the only real flaw I can find within the game from what I've seen.

But more on topic, I think because Tera is using this hybrid model it will do well, possibly the best asian game to be translated, ever? Hopefully anyway.

A tiny bit off topic, I'm in the DragonNest open Beta in Europe, and only about an hour ago I had a little bit of lag for about 5 minutes, which got me killed, I couldn't hit anything, but everything could hit me. This is down to the twitch comabt system, which I now really dislike, my internets not good enough to never ever have lag sadly :/

  • deathshrouddeathshroud Member Posts: 1,366

yea lag is a problem in almsot all mmos, however with improvmeents in connection speeds and mmo tech it is becoming less and less of a problem. Basically how i envisioned this question is, you have jsut found a new mmo whilst reading its featurel ist it has everything you could possibly ever want from an mmo and then you get down to the combat system, which of the 3 would make you happy the most that would fit in there with this ideal mmo.

Didn't vote.  I feel that each system is appropriate given the context in the game world.

Twitch based gaming is fun when you want to be active in the combat process.  Drop it in a lazy-mode quest grinder and it sort of feels out of place, especially in PVE.  Drop it in a PVP centric game and it shines because it's player reaction time and skill moving the character and attacking that can make or break combat.

Auto-attack and maybe a couple added special abilties are the norm in quest grinders.  Let's face it, being sent into the woods to kill 120 boars in order to get 12 boar intestines isn't exactly an exciting mission.  It's a time sink.  It's supposed to take a long time to level up, and the hardest part about it is boredom.  We do it while watching TV, chatting with others, or other distractions that make the experience tolerable.  If it was this dull and people actually had to "work" to kill the boars it would be out of the tolerance of many to endure.

Hybrids are a nice mix of the two.  They sort of make you work at combat, but are still easy enough to play in brain-dead mode against most AI controlled enemies.  Sort of a middle ground.  The problem I see with them is people generally like one of the two styles, and forcing them into a hybrid doesn't meet with approval.  There's no real appeal to either type of players (too much effort or too lacking in skill), so these tend to be disliked by many.

Each has it's place I guess.

Well then my ideal MMO (with my ideal internet connection) would be twitch then I think. My favourite single player games use twitch based combat, and I would love to play an MMO with that combat style.

If I could change my vote now it would be to twitch now ^^

Really? I never thought of RIFT is using "realistic" graphic. I played the trail last week and feel it slightly above Wow but on same level as TOR. So that would mean it is in stylized graphic range (admittly I'm not sure the proper term for that kind of graphic, so I just use your word). And I play RIFT in high setting (AMD HD 6850). and for Age of Conan, they are the same level as LOTRO which in realistic range but still not real enough for me.

Sorry to derail the thread for a moment. I strongly prefer stylized graphic. I just don't know why. I felt that when Devs try to make some mmo feel realistic, it didn't feel real at all. It just trying too hard to make it feel real. Strange thing, if I am playing SPRPG and it using a realisitic feel, it does feel real like Fry Cry 2 (well not entirely realisitc but it have that feel), Code of Duty 4, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and few others. It seem work so well for any single player games. But in MMO, it feel.... fake. I was watching Mortal Online. And noticed there is thing that feel it didn't feel real. The combat feel real of course but the graphic really bother me. In stylized graphic, it feel real to me. the animation is usually fluid, the environment really look good. Maybe it just me.

Twich is the best for me and I felt that AOC combat sucks .  Maybe Dragon Nest and Tera type of combat  should be the way to for future MMO.

    Err.

Basically what I get from Vanguard: a system that is simple to learn but hard to master.

And a system that is, unlike WoW, not fully scriptable and automatizeable.

My reaction speed is not getting any faster over time so I tend to expect my character to handle the heat of battle, not me the player.

Agree 100%. I"m not a wizard. My character is. I'm not a Jedi. My character is. As I age I'm going to get slower on a mouse and keyboard, not faster.

I expect my character, however, to improve it's skills.

Guild  Wars 2´s combat seems to be exactly what i am looking for ^^

The wait is just getting too long & annoying.... :(

I voted hybrid. While I like and used to play a lot of FPSs that were very much 'twitch', I find it a bit tired at this point. It is just too simple a question of reflexes and has rarely called on me to use much in the way of tactics. The 'tab' targeted cooldown variety is tactics and very little reflexes. While it can still be fun for me in PvP, I tend to fall asleep in PvE.

One of my favorite hybrid systems was Tabula Rasa. Another, which might be arguable, but I'd call it hybrid is Champions. Especially in Third Person Shooter mode, Champs feels very twitch, cooldowns are minimal, it is more about movement, twitchy timing on build ups and blocks, and more movement.

Was happy to see someone else feels this way.  How the combat fits with the design of the game is more important to me than the type of combat used.

Personally i would love to see the Warband Combat-System enhanced and be used in a MMORPG.

So rather twitch based i guess.
