So when attending things like Dragon*Con, he's got a lot of explaining to do. See just what he says to get over that awkward, "Oh I see..." moment. Read on!
I’m going to Dragon*Con this year and predictably it has caused a little confusion and earned me a bit of teasing among my less-than-geeky acquaintances. Explaining the concept of "gaming conventions" to a non-geek is a lot like trying to explain your involvement in an insane religious cult to people who think you're about to hack them into little pieces so that you can obtain eternal life.

One thinng mmorpg.com's writers lack is humor. Nice to read something I can laugh about, instead of the usual vein of "SW:TOR doesn't excite me." Well done Mr. Coyote.
cons are awesome. I went to dragon con a few years back and it was without a doubt a awesome experience. so much more than just games that people can do and chicks in skin tight clothes or very little clothes are really awesome. I love cons, just tell your friends that you are going to watch girls play dressup in very revealing outfits and on the side your gonna play some board games and stuff, cause that is pretty much what cons are about.
So it IS a geek thing..
I'm amazed that in this economy anyone other than the rich can even afford conventions. Maybe you ARE rich. But anyway....too expensive for the peasants, so I can't attend any of them.

Yes, only the stinking filthy rich can scrimp, save, and use discount sites to obtain good rates and savings. We do this on our luxurious computers that are made out of diamonds and the skin of the homeless, wherein you are probably commenting emo-like on a dirty rock with a usb cable sticking out of it.

Well, I'm one peasant who goes to DragonCon every year. Buy your ticket early, shop online for good room rates, save a little money every week ... voila, off you go to con.
Coyote, will you let me hang out with you at DragonCon? I'd do anything to have the honor of basking in your awesome. And more importantly, do you autograph body parts?
I totally agree. There is nothing like a convention (or a music festival, for those who love that, too). I went to Rock am Ring and Gamescom last year and both were the perfect display of everything you could wish for in your nerd-heart (or heart of [music] metal).
What creeps me out though is some of the anime inpersonators I come by every year in our state capitol. We got a big Japan convention going and they come creeping out of every hole and nook they were hiding in. It's weird to see all those teenagers going at impersonating an anime character and shouting about their names in realy **REALY* bad Japanese.
lol. This article is excellent and sooooooooooo true. I'm going to Dragon Con too. I'm so excited. They are so much fun. And its great to be around like minded people during this time. Incidentally, last year I came across this guy that must have been 8 feet tall dressed like Conan the Barbarian. And seriously, he had these rippling muscles that show he had to be a serious body builder and he was just yummy to look at. And the costume was perfect, like movie perfect. Costume watching is one of the most fun things to do at the Con. Oo, I'm getting ahead of myself, I'm just so revved up.
Who says we can afford it? We save all year for this. We almost weren't able to go this year. We go because we love it and are willing to sacrifice during the year to go. This is the only time a year when I can feel totally comfortable in my own skin being around people exactly like me. Geekdom may have become more main stream but we're still the minority.

Jeez man, it didn't sound that depressing to me at all when I read it. Maybe it's not so much him that needs to lighten up? :S

I live in Costa RIca (No, it's not Puerto Rico. We are in Central America if you are wondering) Sadly, here the video gaming comunity has no events whatsoever.
Your typical "video game store" has pirate copies (and most of the time of a really bad quality) of all games in any possible console or even PC games going from $4 to $10. But don't worry. They do sell original games as well.... you just need to pay about $120 dollars for your average $40 game.
Oh, and the only games that are "worth it" are soccer games. RPGs are the epitome of stupid boring games. And your average $800 dollar PC costs around $1,600 in local stores.
I've never been to any game con, but I have been a faithful follower of video games since i was 8 years old. I'm 29 now.
Anyway, I wish there was some way to inject the local gaming comunity with events like these.

... As I was saying. I saw Momoa last year and he was DELICIOUS. Sadly, he was fully clothed. Maybe this year that the movie is out, he'll ripple some muscles for us, Moirae?
By the by, the article was fantastic and witty. I don't have any non-gaming friends (even my wife, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and her grandmother game and would be willing to Con it up) and these days the non-geeks are few and far between, but it still made me laugh.

I figure all the guys get their fill of eye candy during the con, its only fair that we girls get it once in a while. Really though, that Conan guy looked almost exactly like the guy in the new movie.
I was thinking the same thing. For a humor writer....the man has no sense of humor. Do you honestly think I would use a word like "peasants" to seriously describe a people group in the year 2011? ROFL
Basically what I was saying....tongue in cheek...is that if I had hundreds of dollars to waste, it wouldn't be on a geek convention. They're expensive and don't interest me. Now bugger off and let me go back to my lifestyle of peasantries and begging for coin.

If it doesn't interest you, then why did you bother to post or to come back? You don't HAVE to like Con's. Personally, my husband, myself, and all our friends, LOVE Con's. There are only two places that I might be more willing to vacation at (Disneyland or back home to see my family that I only get to see once every three years).
We have his Avatar here. He's gotta look something like that, right? Maybe we can stake out the bars and eventually find him.
