I want to play a MMO, which should I pick?

OderintOderint Member Posts: 3

I have never been a huge RPG fan but I really liked the Fallout series. I also have a friend from work talking me into SWTOR. So while reading up on this I think I started getting interested in the Fantasy / midevil?? type RPG.  And now I really do want to try one out.

So what would you suggest? Rift maybe? I do NOT have any friends that I know of playing any of these. So I will be starting out alone.  I have also thought about some free ones since it is my first and I might find I don't like em... Dungeons & Dragons Online, Guild Wars, etc.

Heck maybe I shoudl start out alone with Oblivion.... only $19 on Steam.

So what do you guys think I should cut my noob baby teeth on?

depends what you like, did you like the Lord of the Rings movies, than start with that it is free 2 play for awhile anyway

EQ2 would make a great "first" mmo. You can play it for free somehow.

Oblivion would be a fine choice if you're new to that type of game, although personally I like Morrowind much more.

You can't go wrong with any of these games.

    good "medieval" fantasy mmo's:

    LotRO

    Vanguard

    EQ2

though if i were you and brand new, i would start with LotRO, for several reasons. one, they do some nice handholding for you as you get used to the system and quests, etc. two, its free to play, though there is a subscription and a shop to buy questpacks and gear, etc. three, start on the Landroval server, even after the game went f2p the game community didn't suffer overly much. there are still trolls there, both real and imagined =) but for the most part the community is very friendly and helpful.

I would go for RIFT !

Shinny & new...updated graphics...polished gameplay...got the best of all the rest past MMos and improved it.

Often updates & content patches (almost every month!!!) incredible but true :)

It also has a great population & good community ^^

BTW: Oblivion is a great game, but i would rather pick Dragon Age:Origins  ;)

I concur with Rift, and starting on Aug 25th for their week long 1/2yr B-Day event, the client will only cost ya $1.99, still have to buy the 1-month sub fee, but $17.99 isn't a bad price to get started.  Plus on top of that you have all this as well:

    • Special Surprise Birthday Gift – On September 1st all active subscribers will receive a special in-game birthday surprise!

    • Extra Kill XP – Your blood lust is finally rewarded! Bonus XP will be doled out for all PvE and PvP kills

    • Guild Bonus XP – Swiftly level up your guild with bonus XP granted for completing guild quests

    • Big PvP Payouts – All warfronts and open-world PvP events will grant extra Favor and Prestige

    • A Plethora of Planarite – Sealing Telara’s eponymous rifts will reward players with extra planarite

    • Bonus Plaques & Marks – Increased drop rate for plaques and marks

LOL, should I wait until the 25th then?

id try the game trials 1st -- and pay zero

RIFT has a 7 day free trial

WOW can play under level 20 for free

Lord of the Rings Online or Dungeons and Dragons Online -- both offer free play

EQ2 has the freemium EQ2X servers (which include 14 day trial on Live)

after you find a game you like -- then you can pay

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

Vanguard also has a free trial. Up to level 10, for 2 weeks: http://vanguard.station.sony.com/isleofdawn/

World of Warcraft would be your best choice to start.

It's based on mainstream MMOs that came before it, and most MMO's that came after it are based on it, so you wont have any trouble getting the ropes on any older or newer title if you decide to try something else.  Also, when people describe an mmo they most oftenly put it in comparison with WoW, so it's good to know what WoW is all about.

And it's a great game, lol.

I think its more true to say WoW was once a great game . lol .

It really depends what your looking for if its medivel fantasy I think your best bet its proberbly Lord of the Rings Online because it offers a world where you can wander anywhere ,has in depth rpg elements and multiple start zones however it does lack in the pvp department. WoW sort of offers it but its more a steampunk game than true medieval fantasy and if your an experianced gamer ( meaning you've been gaming for more than a month or two ) it lacks any real challenge while leveling although there is some ( meaning very little ) content in the end game that is a  more advanced . DDO proberbly would fit the bill but its more like a traditional rpg solo game with a multiplayer option  its quite enjoyable though for short bursts .  Age of Conans not as bad as a lot of people would have you believe either but the big problem with it is that its very linear so OK to play once but you wont want to roll multiple characters on it . Rifts pretty cool as well its a bit like WoW used to be before Blizzard made it too easy but again its a bit linear and you will need a decent pc to run it well . If pvp is what you want in an mmo then either RIFT WoW or Warhammer are good bets  . Warhammer offers a lot of world pvp and instancesd battles WoW offer virtually no world pvp anymore but it does have very well designed battleground instanced pvp and arenas ( proberbly WoWs only real selling point for the more advanced gamer ) and RIFT offers a something similar with slightly more more world pvp (although not enough) .

Oblvion is a single player game, its not a mmorpg.  It is a role playing game and alot of fun though.  Its action oriented.  Even if you pay a subscription fee, $15 a month for all the entertainment isn't that much.  Now if you aren't playing it that much, then I would drop your subscription.  Make sure your playing one of the better games out there.  There are alot of mmorpgs on this list in MMORPG.com that aren't worth playing.  Stick with the ones that are highly rated.

Don't get stuck playing a bad game.   If you don't like it, move on to another game.

    lets look at FREE mmorpgs:

Runes of Magic is pretty good.  City of Heroes is probably the best hero game out there.  Everquest 2 is pretty good, although you can only have 2 char slots and limited spell casting for free.  WOW only lets you play to level 20 for free, at least EQ2 lets you play to max level.

    ==========================
The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.

Definitely check out the trials first.

You could always wait for SWTOR if you have an interest in sci-fi.

Like everyone said though, just try the trials for various games and see which one you prefer

If it is your first MMO just play WoW, you'll have fun discovering new stuff, get acostumed to the genre quickly and probably get hooked on it until you realise what the game really is.

You'll have fun there I reckon.

    Alas, try the trials

I would also advice to try the trials first, as tastes are mostly different it could be that one of the lower ranked games on the gaming list here will perfect for you. But here I would say try to start with the once ranked above 7.0

You will also have a few choices for F2P and some of the newer ones aren't that bad, but for F2P the rule of thumb is to get the newer ones and skip the older ones. For most none-asian players the older F2P titles will leave a bitter taste behind.

But in the end it realy doesn't matter what others on here say of a game, if you like it, play it, and perhaps pay for it. Just keep in mind that it is only game for enjoyment and don't get addicted to much.

Don't start with wow, no matter what. Get some experience with real games first, and not that fast food themepark.

    You have several interesting suggestions.

From my own experience and personnal taste I suggest you Age of Conan.

A free-to-play MMO would be great to start off with to see of you really like the genre.

    Try Allods Online

OK, Thank you everyone for the suggestions and help. I spent a lot of time looking at videos on youtube from several of the games you guys suggested. And I kept comming back to Rift. So I went ahead and got it. I had to guy it on STEAM but I get 30 days before I have to subscribe.  And to the Age of Conan suggestions, I saw that and liked it when I had already got Rift and was downloading.

So now I spent a little while this morning with my newly created warroir on a low population PvE server. I have to say, this game looks so good. And I am having a good time. I just broke for a little lunch and I am about to head back. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  Now I would not mind to do a little PvP in the future once I learn the game. Would I have to create another character on a PvP shard to do that?

battlegrounds are open on all servers. they are instanced battles of a set number of players on each side, typically with some capture the flag type goal.

other than that, if you want open world pvp, then yes you would need to start over on a pvp shard.
