There is no other mmo company that delivers like TRION. Everyone knows this, and now everyone else has to do the same or be left 4 dead. Bottom Line Trion has changed MMO's for the better.
I'm having a blast playing Rift at level 50, and had a blast getting there.
Have to say though, not so impressed with the 6-month birthday. It's an oxymoron to start off with. A birthday is when your birth day comes around again.
Also, as someone else said, the xp and rewards already come thick and fast in Rift. Sometimes it is like you cannot move without getting some sort of currency, acheivement or gift! So hearing about these gifts etc isn't exciting me in the slightest.
I AM excited about the non-raid endgame content they have talked about, and the new land mass.
I say celebrate the birthday when it is a real birthday and get on with the other stuff.
I'm just pleased it didn't crash and burn. Investment money doesn't get very happy about MMOs these days. Too many flops, too much risk.
It's still not really clear how much money Trion are actually making. You have to factor into it the extensive advertising, the costs of paying coders to patch in much needed extra content, the price of expanding servers at launch to meet the inital rush verses the less than 250K subs they have now, and the interest on their loans to develop the game. I think they are breaking even at the moment. Problem with Trion is I think they thought they would break the one million sub mark and get WoW like numbers in, without that you will see them trying to minimize losses and maximise profits, which could mean F2P model by about year one for the game as it isn't a next gen mmo, more a stop gap on the way to the next gen. trion know this, I tihnk, and will change direction as soon as it is clear they are not going to be able to get to 500K subs long-term.

I agree and wrote it in another thread some weeks ago. I can only guess what went on at the Trion HQ pre-release, but my bet is they have thought that Rift's formula would be breaking the 1mio+ sales easily, perhaps even on preorders only. 6-12 month later the game would have had it's 2mio+ subs and would be in dry blankets once SWTOR, GW2 hits the market.
Now, it didn't turned out this way and Trion is facing an uphill battle to keep the game from even going cash-shop/freemium/whatever within one year from now. On a sidenote: Once it gets introduced, Trion will find a way to smokescreen it, just like the "trial server conversion" thing. I wish they would show the same creativity when it comes to content and features and not just copy about everything.
However, the game bleeding subs this fast, esp. with huge dips at the 1, 3 and 6 month mark, caught them cold and they've shurely expected otherwise (i.e. opening 100? servers)
Then the change of direction you mentioned is already happening. Trion must have found out that the game won't survive on constantly shoving out raids only. Hence the AA, duo/solo content etc. which is but a good move and may save the game to an extend.
I would like to see a following up article from Ms Ford in another 6 to 12 month.

You sure are putting a hell of a lot of faith into SWToR and GW2. Not sure if you noticed, but they are starting to run out of hype and the videos are mehhhhhhhhhhhhhh at best. GW2 videos are cool and need to be proven on live that it is actually a MMORPG.
Games like Aion and WAR still charge sub fee's. I am not sure what this obsession you have with seeing Rift go F2P and thinking it is bad, but Mike B. did warn me not to rage on people like you who invade Rift articles just to inflame and make fans mad. I would cool it and seek help.
This game has one month from the 25th to retain my subscription. I'm sorry but if you follow the patch changes and the double talk from Trion its enough to make a person quit. I play primarilly warrior and i'm disgusted with the game in general and how they've been operating.
If you dont believe me. Alvahex 50 warrior Sunrest. Chat me up if i'm online.
This game has abused rpers which made up a huge portion of the preorders A lot of people quit the game in the first month when trion made th server rules. Right now i'm at a 2% of renewal and this event isnt going to do anything to change that. I wouldnt recommend it and i dont recommend it to anyone here.
I really think that for many their sense of scale is way off. It's been said many times and it will be said again and again and again. A few hundred k active subs is VERY good and VERY profitable. People should step back and relax. This game deserves kudos and I do look forward to how the game grows. MMOs generally only get better with time and though I don't currently have a sub I enjoyed my time in their world. You don't have to marry a game to root for it. The mmo space is growing. Relax this is a good thing for mmos in general.
150k subs a month means the company is making a profit. In this business (in most businesses actually), making a profit means you are successful. It may not be a "hit", but hits aren't really created, they happen. People like to think a hit can be created, but those people are wrong. Trion has done pretty much everything they can to make a game that could be a hit, it's not, so they are "only" making a profit. Doing any better would have just been chance. Their goals now are to keep their subscriber base happy, because it's pretty likely that the game they went for has maximized its potential, and past a certain amount of time, if you are not already a hit, it gets prohibitively hard to become one.

aside from the clunky class (some are insanelly similar)i love the fact they corrected graphic issue and corrected scripting issue!
this game is the best of 2011 mmorpg released this year!pretty much always lot of player and now gaming season is just around the corner it will full up!

MMO's don't peak, they don't have "one chance only", that is a myth created in the aftermath of Vanguard and perpetuated by fringe forum trolls intent on becoming the next "video game analyst" (absolutely useless occupation btw).
The truth of the matter is that Vanguard was killed by a lack of support by the company who bought it (who of course, but SOE). They stripped it of development funds and staff, and refused to even allow for the possibility of a future expansion of the game that may cause it to compete with EQ2.
As someone who actually played Vanguard, there were lots of new players coming into the game. Most people who play MMO's don't spend so much time on the worthless speculation of forum nerds, however once they discovered the lack of support the game was getting most of them left. As long as Trion can survive as a company and remains committed to Rift, it's fans should be able to get all the content they want and if that content is well recieved then population numbers will rise.
I like Rift, I have 3 50's and a 42.... but I don't want to put the time and effort into the instancing and raid gearing my toons because if I wanted to continue doing that, I'd be doing it in WoW where i have 7 years invested. I think Trion mentioned 'random' zone events including monsters and more rift events... these are enjoyable. I love the spur of the moment quality of the rift groups that form and I love the 'join public group' system that Rift has. Great idea to build on.
One of the turn-offs of RIFTs is how easy the game is. Then they hand out epics and loot like Candy every other week.
Now this actually makes me not want to go back... They are just making the game easier and handing out more free stuff to try and get people to play..
If they want people to return, they should add a ton of content and make combat itself more interesting and challenging. They should fix PvP without breaking PVE further.
Free stuff isn't going to change the core game issues.
I hardly think Rift falls into the "not adding enough content" category. Do they need to hold back content and lable it "adventure packs", "modules" or "expansions" and put a nice price tag on it before its respected as content to the MMO community?
No other mmo... NO other MMO has released as much content as Rift has in a 6 month period. And guess what? They've done it all for free.
This Tion should get alot of credit for, while rift aint my game the devs at Trion have been working hard on pushing out free content. They put most of other mmo devs to shame in this department.
This is the only p2p game on the market atm that justify p2p model imo.

No, this is not what happened to Vanguard.
The story of Vanguard:
1. Sigil signs SoE as publisher (not a funder, just a publisher)
2. out of money, Sigil has to release Vanguard early. Not that another year would have mattered, the code was apparently disastrous.
3. Collosal flop
4. SoE acquires Sigil
5. Over the next year and a half SoE cleans up code, performance and adds content
6. Sub numbers continue to go down and down and down
7. Tired of developing for a game bleeding subs and operating at a loss because of it, SoE stops development. At this point VG has less than 20k subs left
It was the lack of population growth of VG while it was being developed that made SoE stop working on the game. No person in their right mind would continue pumping money into a game that showed no hope of recovery at all.
With the amount of people that claim to be looking for a filler between now and SWTOR/GW2 and given the fact that its widely known that VG has at least a year of casual content, if not more, you would think more people would be playing VG if it was so wonderful. After all, lack of updates wouldnt matter to them. But people arent. Because the game just is not that good.
As for MMOs peaking, the next game that climbs back up after a big first month sub drop off will be the first. It could happen, but there is no precedent for it.
And as for Rift, its more than just content that goes in to a game. For a lot of people, rift doesnt have that 'it' factor. It seems to lack soul. You are actually destroyers of quality. Would you work around the clock and spend milions of bucks to have people enjoy all just for free? Guess not. Think about.

Agreed. I'm happy to continue paying Trion with a subscription.
Also, isn't 200k subs at least 2 million $ a month? Umm, that's a shit load of money, provided you don't compare it with the insane amount of money WoW brings in.

ya supposedly there are random event ,cant recall how they go tho!sometime it is an item on the floor that trigger a quest chain that make those avail etc ,and knowing a lot of area arent obvious to get at to begin with good luck getting those.
but from what i gathered the random event ARE in the game!

That's not the conotation of 'average' I meant - more like....
A television show that is critically acclaimed and has cult following but only has 'average' ratings.
I mean like, a game can still be 'great' but has an average population.
