BUT BECAUSE NO ONE STAYS LONG ENOUGH FOR THE POPULATION TO GROW.  20 people start in June and quit because they don't have others to play with.  20 people start and quit in July, then August and so on.

There is a reason people who try the free trial and don't stick around. VG offers one of the best group experiences available today, but it is also the MMO in the worst shape as far as bugs and optimization. Very few people will tolerate a game that is riddled with bugs and glitches when they know they will never be fixed (still has bugs that we found in beta back in 2005).

VG has a low population because SOE has done very little to show their potential subscribers that they are willing to bring VG up to par in quality that most people expect out of an MMO.

Page you are obviously an extremely tolertant person, but most people don't have that much tolerance especially when newer prettier games launch in better shape.

Personally I hope the people that think this way stay away from VG anyway. Its the reason the community is so good, the cry babies keep playing their other "perfect" games and the more casual laid back folks play VG. Hence the awesome player-base :-)

you are being overly harsh on the game based on its history.  I trialled a few months back and enjoyed the  game a lot and subscribed (only had 1 graphical glitch that I came across while maxed out, no bugs to date).  However Age of Conan went free to Play about a month later, and thats free to play until level 80, so hard to justify the cost. Decided to go for subbing to eve online, and AOC as a fantasy mmorg so I get 2 different styles of mmorg for the price of one.

I have tried various mmorgs and Vanguard is great value for money for a newcommer to the game if you do not fancy AOC imo.

There is a history around this game of people saying what you said.  That they are judging on the past then some shill comes along saying it's fixed.  Then people try it and report it's still buggy.  I just can't believe you.

Sorry OP i dont really like vanguard.

Sure it has a nice world but you have to jump through so many hoops just to group up (proven by your op).

Also the graphics and the animations are horribly dated.

Also SoE really doesnt add content to the game, why would anyone play a game that isnt being developed for?

I don't like dead games... Even EQ1 gets more content updates than Vanguard and probably has more players also.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

Aside from launch, I've played off and on since launch and never encountered game crippling bugs. There have been some, but the last time I played (about 3 months ago) I didn't encounter anything buggy or glitchy. I don't play any more not because of the game, but because of SOE and the way they've handled my business over the years. So I could care less if you believe me or not, but I can say that in the last 10 months of on and off Vanguard play, I've had no bugs.

im not a huge fan either..how can you be a fan when their release was soo horrible..it was a huge turn off for me..and then many forget that they revamped the system "a bit" to make it even easyer to know where to go and what to do..that good ol' handholding tool that was made popular in wow and 80% of mmo nowaya days..imo with a better release and left some things as they were it coulda been a huge sandbox type title..but as i said they doomed this game from jump street

I use to play Vanguard and loved it. The lore and background to the world was well written and the graphics at the time was excelent.

I lost my love for the game not because I got bored with it or tired but because of a certain few within the guild I was in, and unfortuantly this problem followed us to AoC and ended up with a small group of guild members who stole all the guild gold and resources we had been collecting to build a city. This theft broke the guild and people quit AoC.

I now play Eve Online where I only trust the people who I fly with in pvp. Which is a very small group who I have known for a few years now within the game, but still I wouldn't trust anyone completly in a mmo anymore. At least in Eve you have the tools to take the stolen goods back or bring destruction to your enemies. In other mmo's this is impossible.

The game has plenty of population...I see people everywhere I go and get asked to heal for dungeon groups just about night I play. The low population argument is quickly going out the window. Plenty of players are returning and seeing VG for what is it...a great MMO. No matter the small bugs left in the game, VG easily towers over all the MMOs out right now. If SOE continues to get rid of bugs and possibly even add some updates this year I;d easily say VG is the best MMO right now, hands down. Unless of course your a huge pvp fan, then avoid VG...but I was a huge pvp fan before subbing last week and don't miss it at all. In fact I likely wont be playing a pvp game again...

I realize I may sound like a blind fanboy but imo its the truth with todays MMOs on the shelves. The depth of VG makes just about every of MMO laughable in comparison. About the only game which even comes close as far as content goes is EvE.

The players complaining of low population can give up on that excuse to not sub...theres players all over the world each night I log on. The players complaining of lack of updates can stop bitaching about that as well now. The dev is currently working on future updates and is planning to get rid of even more bugs later this year. If enough players return SOE may even open a new pvp server, who knows...so git yer asses out of the themepark crap and into VG ffs lol

VG is a joy to play, and as can be seen here on the MMORPG forums has very few negative posts about it...simply put its a great game. For those who are considers returning, just check out the official forums to get a feel for now the game is doing. Everyday new players are subbing and Twilyte Song is doing bettter then ever. Personally I wish I had tried VG years ago and skipping just about every MMO thats comes out in the last 2-4 years :-/

I loved VG, I am waiting to see what level of commitment this refocus has.  If its a small patch here and there, then I probably am not coming back.  If they actually release some content, a new continent or something, then I probably will come back.

I enjoyed every aspect of the game, even the PvP server (which is gone).  I crafted, harvested, explored, raided, and I even dabbled in diplomacy, I enjoyed a little break from things and playing it.

As you shouldn't. Some people have a big place in their hearts for VG and would gladly "pretend" it has been fixed in order to lure a couple of people back into the game.

No MMO can sustain in the market just on the basis of false allure...VG survived 2 years w/o even any updates just because of its qualities.. no s/w can be 100% bug free...but it is good enough to give a gr8 playing expereince .

VG has survived because it was cut down in manpower and funding. It didn't survive because 1000 people play. The "all games have bugs" excuse doesn't work. VG has more than most regardless of what you say.

  • BenediktBenedikt Member UncommonPosts: 1,406

well i would say VG really still needs a lot of bug catching, but:

    1. even with the bugs it is still playable without more or less any bigger problems

    2. it is imho still one of the best/very best mmorpg out there - partially because of its depth and well thought out mechanics and partially because there is not much of a competition from todays shallow games

It's not going to be a huge level of commitment. They are just talking about to content updates.

Considering the size of dev team and amount of support it gets from SOE no wonder it has survived this long. Compared to other MMOS under SOE vanguard is the cheapest to keep the servers running. Not that SOE is investing huge amount of resources in Vanguard and are worried about making profit on it.

It's definitely NOT the best MMO going right now, in my opinion.  If an MMO doesn't have great gameplay, and doesn't have enough people playing, I'm not sure how you can say that it's a great game for grouping.  Would seem to me that's counterintuitive.

And the sad thing is, if anyone other than SOE was in charge of this game, it might be a damn good MMO.  SoE hasn't done shit for it beyond bug fixes.

The missing PVP element from it is also a big negative for many players, regardless how good it's PVE experience may be.

I don't think that PVP is that big of a deal when Vanguard was never meant to be PVP game from the very beginning. It i was a spiritual successor to EQ and was always dominantely a PVE game. Games like LOTRO, FFXI are good exxample that as long as PVE is good PVP doesn't matter.

There are lots of negative that drove players away but PVP is not one of them.

I have tried VG alot of times, The game runs smoot and works just fine, it also has alot more depth then more game's on the market. I just cant seem to "get into the game" its weird coz the game is the exsact type of game I like (tho would like a  sci-fi clone of it more )  but perhaps its the way the classes work or the art type used ..I just cant get the I wana play more mood.

The game is a good game what has bin neglected by soe for far to long making entrance for new players harder then it should be as whit all "older" top heavy games, you do run into a bug here and there but nothing gamebreaking some bug fixes a reballance to make it far far easyer for new players to get up were the other folks are and a fair promotion program would do the game alot of good.

They already have. But if you are a recent player you wouldn't have noticed.

Played from launch and for almost 2 years. VG was a great game but lack of players and support made me give up in the end.

Only problem with Vanguard that really gets on my nerves are the performance issues from the interface (will try Core UI 3 soon hope that fixes some of these) and the graphical lag you still get in cities.

In that respect, this game reminds me of Baldurs Gate 2, which also still had laggy parts even on new machines that had been released years after the game was released.
