Paradox Interactive has released a brand new trailer for its upcoming MMO, Salem. The video features the sound of someone crying in a dark forest and slowly pans out to show off the infamous town of the "witch trials" The cinematic trailer was released during the 2011 Gamescom.

I thought it was meant to be some horror (F2P) all the way through the trailer until i saw "The crafting MMO" at the end. What an odd setting for a crafting MMO lol.
On the up side it does have PvP and perma-death.

    Salem
    The Crafting MMO

Salem is set in a fantastical New England and offers free form massively multiplayer gameplay in a persistent, mutable and online world. With players taking the roles of intrepid colonists from the Old World seeking to make lives for themselves in the New, Salem provides them with unique crafting, farming and building systems inspired by 17th century alchemy.

Cast in a mold of cute-gothic Salem's lighthearted art style makes for the perfect contrast to the otherwise grim realities of open player-versus-player combat and permanent death. Experience Squonks, Hidebehinds, Witchcraft and the fullest freedom of a sandbox conceived in Liberty.
    Features

    Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game.
    Persistent and mutable world.
    Crafting, farming and building.
Open PvP combat with permanent death.
    Free to Play.

If I remember correctly, there's a fairly stiff penalty for killing another player without provocation. So 'Open World PvP' may be reserved for people who really do want to hang out in the wood alone and slowly starve to death.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Really looking forward to this, the RP potential is huge, hope that a solid community forms!

So the way I'm taking this is, you work hard for days, weeks, months and years. Someone comes along kills you, game over ? Company get's you're money and your out a year of hard work ?

If i'm wrong please tell me ? If not , no thanks.

They already had such system in Haven&Hearth, which is f2p either

Lets not forget that this is a browser game. browsergames can be good but ..wait and see I guess.

Prema-death works if done right but the ancient question remains, how do you stop someone from making a new alt in this f2p  browser game thats gets a knive and stab you to death like the maniacs they are.

the other stuff sounds nice but its far far to early to speculate on how things work..they havent shown a single screenshot or any public real info on the game besites..its a sandbox whit perma-death.

Now this is really cool.  In addition to all the afformention, how dark and forboding an area appears is related to how civilized it is. I'm certain that the generic mention (without deep game-play mechanics detail) perma-death and open-pvp are going to be a stop-gap from any remote mainstream appeal, but it will suit a certain audience.

Regardless, this game (been off my radar for a while) is certainly a virtual world mmorpg that has some teeth, with all the organic and player-centric mechanics and environmental dynamics the devs are planning on; the polar opposite of the arcadeish games that most mainstream mmorpg's have become for the casual audience.

The caveat is always, though, I've been burned by Xsyon, Earthrise, etc., and this could be a pile also, but we can always anticipate it wont be.

Yes you are wrong. It's a game, so I don't get it why you work hard for days, weeks, months and years. You should have fun playing the game instead. It's a game, not a job.

It's Salem and looks like what I think Salem probly looked like back in the day. Better than the other video I seen which put me off the game completely. Probly going to be like H&S. They should do a feign death system where you just go unconscioiuse and if you do happen to die from being unsociouse for too long or too many time they should do a legacy system where your next offspring inherits your skills or atleast a large amount of them. Don't know if that's going to happen but perma death would suck if you been working hard on a character and have everything lost. So, maybe introduce a law system because who would want to live on the outsides of a town with hard access to food, shelter and the basics to live etc.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

I live in New England and when I go into the woods in my back yard that is exactly how it looks. The realism is astounding!

This game looks freaking weird, and I'm intrigued...

When they say it is a crafting MMO, they probably mean Witch Craft.

I don't really get the name. Sure, Salem was founded in 1626 but so were loads of other small towns around it, the name is usually connected to the witch trials or in some cases to Lovecrafts Cthulu mythos.

The games should have been called "Pilgrim", "pioneer" or "settler" instead.

Anyways, Paradox are famous for releasing buggy games that takes a year before the patches fixing most of the issues, and that is for turn based strategy games. I fear what will happen now when they release a MMO that just have been in development 2 years. Sure, some of those games are really fun (I like Crusader kings, I love to make the most inbreed king possibly there).

I think I will stay clear of this game, at least the first year.

Being killed by other players will be the least of your worries, the environment is harsh and unforgiving.

If a person who is curious has given H&H a look and won't play it because of it's graphics, well then there isn't much of a point in worrying about how Salem will play. Salem's graphics, while being 3D, won't be much more pleasing to the eye than H&H's.

I do wish these guys would release some new in-game footage. I'm curious to see what they're still working on. I didn't think it would take this long to slap some 3D art assets on top of H&H's existing mechanics. Makes me wonder what more they're doing with Salem.

How about you just give us all a quick run down on why this works in H&H.  I'm already heading for the exit with this permadeath crap, but I'll stop and listen if you want to tell me why I shouldn't.  However, I won't go out and test some random game, specifically to see what's so great about a game concept I loath.  But I will listen.

Sorry this looks like about the dumbest MMO I have ever seen.  I predict this will arrive with a big thud and then not heard from again.

No in simple terms...  They are using a type of inhertance system.  It pretty much means the game has perma-death in theory only.  When (not if) you die, your dead char's skills and belongings are handed down to your new char.  In other words, all that would happen upon death is your name and looks would change, but you wouldn't really lose anything.  This isn't really perma-death.

No-one on this planet would release a game that had proper perma-death, and this game should certainly stop touting that it has it I feel.

the alpha stage graphics of this game makes Alganon look like Age of Conan! Enough said. No one can take seriously a permadeath FtP mmo when it looks like a crossbreed  of Hello Kitty and Haven and Hearth

well, this will probably surprise you, but there are people out there (and here, e.g. me) who actually dont care about graphics, but about gameplay.

add permadeath system in H&H (and probably same in salem):

i would like to add 2 things to what unreal wrote:

    1. inheriting of skills is actually working rather interestingly - in the game you have couple of value of different things, which are tied in pairs (when you increase one, second decrease) and one of them is % of LPs your new char will inherite (kind of like insurence), which is tied with how fast you gain LPs - therefore the more "insured" you want to be, the slower you advance :)

    2. he forgot (i think, i only went through his post very quickly) to mention the scents. it is a way to punish crimes (killing a player or stealing items from "deeds" are crimes) - if you have a skill, you can track down the killer and punish (kill) him, even when he is offline! (well at least i think that is how it works, i didnt pvped even once in h&h, except for fighting over mines it is rather rare)

I'm not to fond of permadeath and full pvp in the same game, here is why, ganker guilds will exploit this system to max using newly created toon just to kill people and let thier guild members loot the bodies.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

People complain themepark have no originality and every themepark is like the last one. Isn't that the same with Sandbox games? every new sounds like the last one with their staple feature 'FUll LOOT PVP' and add permadeath to it for a twist.

read unreal's post, you will find out it is impossible to do this with their system

You really have never played a pvp game to say that.  Looking at the current ruleset, it will not deter the gankers from operating at all.  Permadeath will just kill this game except for a few diehards.

well i did play Haven & Hearth so i do know that ganking is more or less nonexisting in it. and since the skill to kill people is not really a low level skill, so there is really NO WAY to "max using newly created toon just to kill people"
