id be curious to find out as well. the graphics are dated as hell, but the gameplay is sposed to be great. an f2p model might pump some new blood into an old game.
i only wish shadowbane had come up with an idea like this to keep that game going as well.
"There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play." Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse
I think it would just require too many resources to get it switched over. Maybe if they ever greenlight DAoC2 (or restart Dawn of Camelot) they might be persuaded to open up the original as F2P as a marketing idea...

Why should it be? Longtime players are still subscribed and it seems like Bioware Mythic is still making money with it so no need to change that.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
Actually, until the 'new' (awful) herald went up you could see player numbers, and Ywain was pretty much always pushing 3K evenings (granted that's a BIG drop from SI days )
As for why it doesn't go FTP....the game type REALLY doesn't lend itself to that type of model At heart, it's mainly a PVP game - which would mean it would pretty much HAVE to become a "pay to win" model. Chances are far greater that they would make more money off the subs they have currently, than any free to play model.
and i'd like to add that if the game ever did go f2p, i would definetly be trying it out.
it seems as if the longer im playing the more retro im getting. i was always looking for the latest and the greatest upcoming thing. but ive been let down too many times. for example right now, im really enjoying just grinding in L2 and hoping that the expansion GoD will make the game even more interesting for me.

Really? I know nothing about this game....well next to nothing anyways and must have been under the mistaken impression it was gone. As in the servers stopped years ago.
So its still going after all. And its not free to play? Thats kind of odd to me. But I guess if UO is still charging subs I shouldnt be too surprised.
Id have to say though if it ever did go F2P Id sure give it a go.
you have to understand Daoc its a RvR game first note PvP based, so a pay to win model would never work in Daoc or Warhammer. The big shame in this whole thing is Mythic those idiots gave up on Daoc instead of making Warhammer the best game they have ever done (Daoc 2).
Its really said the game might look dated but if you like RvR there is still no better game.

It could work. But most people that never heard of DAoC would likely be turned off by the gfx and PvE style. Would need people to pay and play. If just a bunch of newbies download the game and quit after a couple days it would end up costing them more in bandwidth and setting the new system up than they'd make but. Also, who wants to work on it? Something that many people that often forgot is employees that have a choice tend to prefer to work on the next "big thing." That is there is no internal will to revist DAoC. Unless some project developer raises thier hand and and says they want to do it there is nothing will happen.
the game does not have 3k players, half the players in the game have 1 or 2 bots and not to mention ashitload of plat farmers, NOT to mention 3k players is nothing ! i have more sperm in my nutsack! then that!
for f2p and the classic feel...the options has been put up before, the Uthgard shard is the most popular free shard currently for f2p and classic settings for the most part...
while i would try out DAOC if it was free.. i really dont get why people want it so, these forums are a good indication that a large "vocal" group of gamers are dead set against such things. the fact most F2P games tend to be shallow or fail to substain the player base to any agreeable enjoyment factor..
as well as the repeated bashing by posters inrelation to games being F2P or B2P ect.
most hate F2P games or sub-based games going F2P... im not totally sure why people hate them so much, other then most disagree with the hidden fee's that come with F2P games and the lower quality of content games wind up with.
DAOC is so insignifigant to its owners...they are unwilling to invest to move to a ftp modle. They know how much it costs to keep the lights on and as long as the revenue stream is above a certain point...they keep the lights on. When it falls below....lights out.
A FTP model would be really nice for paying customers' bot accounts. You can't play without a second account going. If they went FTP I'd be playing again for sure.

First , its not free cause there are still about 2500+ people playing it daily that pay for it.
Second , when will you people learn there is no such thig as F2P , it kil's games , if you like a game then F2P is the LAST thing you want to happen to it .
The conversion itself is not expensive, they simply would have to stop charging peoples credit cards and there, F2P. :P
The problems comes with the fact that they still would want to make money, and here the cost occures.

Same reason EQ isn't F2P.
There are no new players coming to these games and the ones arleady playing are paying anyway, so P2P is more profitable.
If it were F2P I would be in there constantly.

'Cause it's still awesome.
No, seriously... hasn't been a game to get RvR right since =/

It won't go F2P because they still want you to pay for 2 accounts to be able to compete.

A simple way to do the F2P model, is to make the basic game F2P with no limitations. You would have to subscribe to use the expansions.
I would consider playing again if they did that.
because it's very expensive to convert a game into F2P and the owners obviously do not think they would get a return on the investment.
It's like £8 a month... That's half the price of Dominos pizza!
