Im with you. I dont know if i should buy EQ Platinum or EQ2.
I played EQ for 3 years and EQ2 for less than a month.
The differences between the two are too many to list, but let me just tell you my impressions of both.
EverQuest has been going since 1999, they have it balanced and well done with 10 expansions full of content. There are 16 different classes/15 different races to choose from and each have nice unique skills and compliment that of other classes except for the Bard (what I played along with Enchanter) in which you can do a great many things at no cost of mana. The game is not like WoW or Guild Wars where you sit in towns trying to find people to adventure or quest with... You can wander around freely, NPCs are all attackable except in a few places. The Quests are not spoon fed to you, but sometimes they can be buggy. Let's see... They have upgraded graphics fairly well over the years, Luclin was the big stepping stone and after that it progressively got better. There are no "instanced" encounters, but with Lost Dungeons of Norrath/Omens of War, you can go on Adventures... With a group of people and have a complete dungeon to yourself. Downfalls to EverQuest, you can feel really overwhelmed, some people have been playing for 7 years... You're a little noob running around and a cool looking guy with a glowing weapon is running around ya and you're like ooo... and then you're like... wow you look uber and they act all snobby and don't answer you. I was in a top raiding guild, but we eventually left and went to WoW, but I didn't like WoW. So yea, the community has little patience for noobs which is sad, but that's how it is since they've become bitter after 6 years of playing. And to answer your question, EverQuest has a population of nearly 500,000 players (450,000 if you round down) still playing... This is nothing compared to WoW's 1.5 million, but it works.
EverQuest 2 has been out for less than 6 months, they are working on balancing and so fourth. It has no expansions, but SOE provides you with what you call, "Adventure Packs" which add extra content, quests, and zones. Unlike EverQuest where you have a different city for each race, you have two cities you can start in because it takes place over 500 years after the original EverQuest and many civilizations have been forced to get together since they have been destroyed. This... I thought sucked. Sure the cities are HUGE, and when I say HUGE, I mean you almost couldn't explore the entire city of Qeynos in one day of play time. But yea, having it all clustered just seems so... unorganized to me. Then the most noticable thing about EverQuest 2 is the graphics... They are nice and new, but if you have anything below a GeForce 3... It won't even let you play the game... So yea, don't end up like me and buying it, then having to buy a graphics card for $800 and then ending up not even liking the game for a combined amount of nearly $900 spent for a game I didn't like. Then, the quests are spoon fed to you... It's like Guild Wars, everything is explained and given to you... No challenge at all to me. Oh.. I almost forgot... They took the original 16 classes in EverQuest and seperated them into 48 where it goes... base class/original EQ class/subclass. This makes room for A LOT of diversity among characters... But consider this, they can do many of the same things with just a difference or two... You have a Bard/Troubadour LFG and a Bard/Dirge LFG... Whoever is higher level wins. It creates too much un-needed diversity and you may go through 47 classes out of the 48 trying to decide which one you want to play. EverQuest 2 has a fairly large population, I don't have an estimate though since I can't access game information now that I don't subscribe to it.
Anyway, EverQuest is old, but it does not follow the easy, simplistic playstyle of today's MMORPGs in order to make a casual player on nearly the same level as a hardcore player. In EverQuest, if you started playing 7 years ago, you're gonna be so far ahead of everyone else that they won't catch up because you invested that much time into it. EverQuest 2 is new, allows casual players to advance, has a simplistic quest system, and lacks all of the fun lore of the cities that EverQuest had. But it has a lot of fun stuff as well like you said... You can own property, this isn't so in EverQuest. In EverQuest, you want a horse/drogmar (lizard thingy... did I ever spell that right?) and you can be happy with your life besides gear. In EverQuest 2, you want your mounts, property, and gear. And since EverQuest 2 is starting out new, it lacks as much content as EverQuest, but it will have expansions for some time to come and continue to improve just as EverQuest did. And then one day, it'll be a true EverQuest 2 instead of a simplistic, graphic pretty MMORPG.
I'll be glad to answer. EverQuest is very old, if you want to join in after 7 years then feel free to, but you will feel noobish everytime you see a really cool character and it takes at least a year now to get into a decent raiding guild with all the expansions now... In between PoP, GoD, OoW, and DoN progressions/flags, you'll have to raid a TON. EverQuest 2 is new, graphics fresh, simplistic for beginners and will continue much longer than EverQuest (they are already mass merging servers due to the drop in population). New expansions will come, improvements in classes, and just much much more content.
Hope that helps, if you have any other questions, just ask... I leave it up to you to decide though, personally I'd go back to my Level 70 Bedazzler on Mith Marr any day than go to EverQuest 2 until they decide to add enough content to where you don't have all the best gear and content on the server in less than two months. But the desert expansion coming out for EverQuest 2 looks very promising and I will probably buy it and resubscribe to EverQuest 2 to check it out.
Thanks for reading
I wouldn't agree with quests are spoon fed to you : Sure EQ is alot harder and if you like work then play it!
Then EQ2 has like clues to where the quest is but it doesn't give u the esact location, you have to work it out for yourself!
GW just has a waypoint to it which EQ2 doesn't
eq and eq2 are the best
Awesome
Psiki hit it really well.
Havent tried EQ2, but as far as EQ1 goes i played it quite extensively.
The best part about EQ1 is the content. EQ1 has, by far, more content than any other MMO ever. You would think it probably would with, how many expansions? All the quests, the zones, the mobs, the items, the different race/class combos.... So much content!
But then doing the new expansions as they came out was really fun too. It might be a bit overwhelming with all the zones to choose from now.
