Hey guys out of sheer boardom I have just started playing League of Legends, It's actually a lot of fun, Anyway I was looking at some youtube videos and come across Heroes of Newerth, I seen a mate play HoN once but I didn't really take much interest.
Are these games more or less the same thing? If so which should I play? Which game is the most popular?
Thanks.

Dota 2
But out of those 2 I prefer HoN.
HoN if You want a cheap copy of dota with a different name. LoL if you want something a bit different. It's really all about personal taste. Also the e-sports scene in LoL Is just exponentially larger if you are interested in competitive side of the game.
There is a niche crowd for them both and don't forget Bloodline Chronicles as well. As for popularity, I believe LOL has the edge if your into them types of team based games.
Try them all out
LoL is for people who've never played a MOBA before, HoN is for people who don't feel like playing DOTA on Warcraft 3, and DOTA2 looks like slow as hell with high production values made by a company who I don't support anymore.
HON!
Currently playing - FF14ARR
Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.
I just recently tried out HoN and then started playing LoL again after about a six month break. There are a few differences but they're more or less the same thing. Things I didn't like about HoN:
1.) Has denying
2.) Str/Agi/Int stat system as opposed to the simpler Attack/Ability Power
3.) No recall
4.) More items with activated abilities, or at least it seems that way
5.) LoL's cartoony art style makes it easier to see what's going on in my opinion. A good example of how higher poly count doesn't always mean better graphics.
I haven't tried HoN myself. I looked at both HoN and LoL and ended up with LoL. Its actually addictively fun and will probably be more addictive for me with the new mode they will be adding soon. The thing is I like to play it in short bursts and this mode will allow for faster matches, so it will be perfect for my taste. I am waiting for Dota 2 also.
Easiest first, LoL is the most pupolar free to play game with 15 million accounts, 1,4 million playing every day, 4.5ish playing every month and 500.000 playing at peak hours.
LoL is way more team oriented than DOTA/HoN where one player can pretty much carry alone with enough farm.
There is no denying/killing your own creeps in LoL, but you can force your opponents out of xp range/ getting the creep kill.
There are bushes in LoL where you cannot see enemies inside them unless you are in the same bush or you can place a ward/use a skill that gives visibility.
LoL is much more user friendly, item recipies is much better made you have a item tree where you se what the item you have/going to buy can build into.
Unlike HoN you cannot untarget your own hero which is just stupid in HoN, why would you want to loose control over your own hero? Heroes with Pets you hold ALT and you control it instead of your own hero.
When it comes to picking between HoN and LoL, it really comes down to preference. Don't listen to the people that tell you the 2 games are identical and you should play 1 of them based on the graphics, because that is un-true.
What it comes down to is your style of game that you enjoy the most. If you are someone who enjoys a game that looks amazing and has very fun elements to it, then go with HoN. It is a much more graphically intense game over LoL and you will be able to notice that within the first minute of playing it. However, if you are a person who enjoys a more laid back grahpic game, or one that enjoys the JRPG look to a game, then LoL is your choice. And before anyone flames me for saying that LoL looks "kiddish," I am not saying that at all. I love the graphics of LoL, and think they are really nice, its just HoN has much better and sharper looking graphics.
When it comes to gameplay, LoL and HoN play very similiar, but also very different. HoN is a much more "on-your-toes" game compared to LoL. Since HoN has denying (Killing your own creeps to prevent the enemy heroes from getting gold and full exp), you have to constantly be looking at your creeps' health while also focusing on killing creeps so you can get gold. Also, HoN penalizes you for getting killed. When you die, you lose gold unlike in LoL. The more you die, the less items you will be able to buy, which ultimately hurts your late game. As for LoL, the gameplay is much more "laid-back." All you have to focus on is killing minions and harassing the enemy champion. When it comes to dying, its not that big of a deal due to no loss in gold. You can die 20 times in a game and still have a complete item build.
The only way to see what game is better for you, is to play them both and make the decision for yourself. You are going to get a ton of different response from people trying to pull you towards LoL or HoN. It all comes down to what you enjoy the most and what type of gamer you are.
Or, you can be like me, and play both HoN and LoL
I played Dota and transitioned to HON & LOL and i'll move to Dota 2 when it releases.
HON is basically Dota without needing WC3, LOL is a more new player friendly version of Dota that I personally find less satisfying than HON.
Play HON until Dota 2 releases.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
