Yeah the entire character transfer scam really irritated me. Sadly, I bought into it and they still haven't enabled the transfer of heirloom gear so that you could potentially level up toons fast on a server your friends are on, instead of plodding along at normal pace for weeks and wanting to take a break from the game completely once you reach the lvl cap. Grrr.
I didn't try to transfer characters in Rift, was it free?
Well, I've also done the trial and found the game to be just more of the same old stuff we've seen over the last 10 years. Quests = Kill 10 of this, gather 5 of that kind of stuff. Combat = mash the usual buttons over and over. Graphics = fairly standard but all the characters look like each other because they all wear the same gear from quests. There's F2P games out there just as entertaining.
The Elemental Rifts idea had potential, forming group quests as they opened up, but many's the time I had quests in an area and couldn't do them because rifts kept popping up and hardly anyone turned up to assist in shutting them down. The nail in the coffin was the near-total silence from the community in the chat channel - apart from guild adverts popping up (come on, nobody joins a guild that has to beg for members in the chat channel!) I doubt I saw more than a handful of comments from players all week. It was almost eerie!
While I can see some, not all, of your points being valid. A lot of those points become invalid once you get further in the game. Combat is a bit clunky at lower levels, I'll admit that, but it's worlds apart form the combat that is experienced at 50. In my opinion Rift has the best endgame I've seen in any game. It's not a bunch of copy paste mechanics. Content patches are done monthly which is unheard of by anyone else. They're not out there to nickle and dime you like Blizzard does by making you pay for features which should be a standard part of the game. Trion truely does care about it's subscribers and listens, sometimes a little too much, but in the end all is well and people are happy.
You truly need to experience the game beyond lvl 15 to really get a feel for it which I know sucks for people that want to try it out. But I promise anyone who is willing to give it an honest try and stick through all the rough edges you will grow to like it. I'm sure Trion will eventually work on the lower lvl part of the game, as that is the only thing hurting it imo. But as of right now, they're putting a lot of effort into pushing more and more content into the game. If you haven't read about 1.5 then I suggest you do so... It will be adding a TON of new features. Features that anyone from an avid casual/solo player to a die hard will love.
Sure Rift feels like a copy and paste of previous mmorpg titles i agree with that. Even if you wanted to call it a WoW clone i can see that. Thing is just about every mmorpg that comes out pretty much all follow the same formula. The reason being is the formula works and has proven to be successful time and time again.
Out of the 200 mmorpg's out there floating around Rift is the only good WoW clone. I find the game to be actually pretty fun.
Although at lower levels i didnt feel that way .. it wasnt till around 25 i actually started to enjoy it.
If your looking for somthing revolutionary in gameplay jump ship now , because it just aint gonna happen and be a success.
Many games tried this..to be different..to think outside of the clone box..Look where they ended up..all closed down or now on a f2p model.
The choices are pretty much (1. A broken attempt at a sandbox style mmorpg which the masses wouldnt enjoy , because most people dont have the time or patience for something of the sort. (2. A rehashed theme park style mmorpg which has proven to be successful if done right. (3. A totaly new style mmorpg with new mechanics , but same old kill XX many amount of whatever , just with unfamilier button sequences which either end up being repetitive or buggy.
So ya Trion played it safe with there first mmo and went the theme park direction. Cant say that i blame them for that. The game is good not GREAT but good. And defenetly better than any other p2p game thats out right now other than WoW. I even like it better than Aion which was my second most played mmorpg.

2 games that thought out of the clone box which i feel deserved a better fighting chance in this cutthroat genre.

As of patch 1.3, you can transfer characters between servers for free with a few restrictions: https://trionworlds.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1013

Time to delete it...
Seems as if you can only reach level 15 in the trial, it stops you at one point away from 16. Took me less than 2 days to hit that.
