The old 14 day free trial for a MMORPG; we've all done one, there's probably banners advertising 14-day trials on the page right now.
I frequently sign up for them myself, as I recall I've done the Eve trial, a WWIIonline trial, EQII, AC2, Planetside, the works! Until finally my most recent: Saga of Ryzom.
As usual I cough up my credit card number, knowing that if I forget to cancel the account I will be charged under the assumption that I wish to keep playing. But I accept this subtle business trick, it's not exactly unacceptable conduct, but it is frowned upon by many.
However, this time I fell victim to it. During the last days of my trial with SoR I was away on a bushwalk in NSW and hadn't thought to cancel the account before I left because, to be honest, after about 2 minutes of playing SoR I just got completely bored and forgot about it.
And so, after discovering I'd been billed for the client cost and hence crying 'JUSTICE!' before shaking my fist at SoR, I hastily cancel my account with my reason being a somewhat crude:
'Completely forgot about the trial and forgot to cancel. You bastards win this round.'
I put that incident behind me and thought nothing of it again until I recieved this email today:

This email is to inform you we have initiated a refund procedure for the following amount: 25.99 EUR. Your account statement should show a credit within the next couple of days.

Despite my rudeness and lack of refund request, they took it upon themselves to refund my money.
Kudos to Saga of Ryzom.

The reason they (or any other mmorpgs) have the cc validity check is not to "trick" people into giving them money, it's to ensure that they don't have people keep trying to sign up for the trial over and over again and playing for free, is what I am guessing.
But glad to hear you got your refund, to see that Nevrax dealing is pretty honest with regard to that kind of stuff.
SOR sucks, the company sucks and its just another overrated mmorpg!
Don't bother wasting your time with it
Ryzom is really good about refunding peoples money. It's just a shame their not that good about getting content into the actual game.

But, no offense to anyone who likes the game.... I found SOR excruciatingly boring when I trial'd it.

Don't like any mmorpg very much
That's why I'm personally waiting on Ryzom Ring. Players will cough up content better and faster than the devs to help get more people to play. While a bit of a hassle to have to build your own areas, it will at least allow people's creativity to be expressed, and perhaps give them the breath of fresh air SoR needs.

lol... you must really be one of the unhappiest people around, I rarely see you write anything good or positive about anything, even when someone else has had a great experience. Why so angry chum ?
And to the OP, I got pretty bored of SoR quickly too but it's awesome to hear of a company leaving a good impression with decent CS, thanks for sharing.

to be fair, I'd much rather spend the time I spend (even on Ryzom) doing conventional P&P RPing, but the opportunity isn't there. So you do the next best thing.
EVERY MMORPG is lacking the factors that make tabletop gaming great.

This is why I never sign up for a free trial unless I plan on sticking with the game. My memory is just too full of holes to remember to cancel! LOL That's great that they gave you a refund, though! Maybe stick a post-it note on your monitor next time!
