old school mmo feelings

eyceleycel Member Posts: 1,334

Is there any way to re-create artifically or otherwise the feeling we all got back when games like everquest , wow, swg, and many others gave us.  It was like a new world was being shown to us that we could interact with and ever since then nothing has really come close.  It was a sence of no war, no hate, no flaming, everyone worked like one well oiled engine all working togather to make everything as pleasent as possible.  Those times and feelings seem lost for ever and what were left with is second rate feelings.  Maybee games like SWTOR or GW2 will bring that excitement that Im looking for back.

Which brings me to realizing that broadband and cable internet was a big part of playing mmos, well dial up also during everquest but maybee there will be a new technoligy that makes broadband look like patty cake and will change human interaction more then the internet itself.

Im just crazy I guess, I sit here playing meridian:59 and underlight soaking up all that started this mmorpg stuff and I get that feeling even today that those games have been out for more then a decade.  None of the new mmos have that feeling though.  Those games didnt matter if they made any money, if they had any subscribers or had any unreal expectations.  All they had to do was to function like an mmo and that was it, the rest was just iceing on the cake, I think thats where that feeling might have came from.

It's like first love, you never forget that feeling and you won't feel quite the same for the next love.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I suppose your point is reasonable but love to me never changes, its either love or something else there is no degree like hot and cold when it comes to love, but that my friends can wait for another tale.

You won't, unless you really go off the ledge and play an MMO that is just totally different than your past experience.  Since most new MMO's follow the same standard theme park model this is pretty hard to do, however I felt the same sense of wonder (more actually) when I first played EVE about 4 years ago after spending about 4 or 5 years in more traditional titles.

I expect when the next planetside comes out I'll get another chance to "feel the magic" since I missed that title the first go around.

i think its one reason ive gotten into older grind style mmos. ones where i can wander, kill, level, and harvest and not worry about fulfilling some questline that will leave me in the dark at endgame.

To some extent I thinkk it can be redone (ie Vanguard) had the best community of all black era MMORPGS, cause it was mostly filled with former Everquest, Daoc and UO players during Beta it gave me the same thrill Everquest did, not talking about Beta  3 cause it was the start of dumbing down things.

So my hopes are now on AA the game is looking fantasticque and seems to offer tons of freedon and dungeon crawling.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

I think/hope that only an MMO world that is substantially different from the classic type MMO's just listed could ever give that feeling again.

EQ was my first, and having no clue what i was doing, i died a lot.... and learned fast...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I think we're chasing the dragon when we ask for that.

But just to add to it: we'd need a game whose rules cannot be cynically exploited.

I'd also love publishers to tone down their marketing. When I read press releases, it's like showing the movie Karate Kid to Bruce Lee and eagerly expecting him to be impressed (not that I'm in any way as accomplished as Bruce Lee was at fighting)!

I think part of the magic of those first mmorpgs was the sense of discovery. I think no matter the game quality and mechanics, it was a whole new world being opened up to you. The character builds were often flawed and awful, every new equip drop was the best thing ever no matter what (greens? blues? Whatever, just look at my awesome hat!!) The sense of compeition and comparison with other players was more casual, and every benchmark came with a sense of "POWERUP! YEAAAH! NOW I CAN WEAR AN EVEN COOLER HAT!"

I don't see it so much as a first love, but more like ~ the fun and playfulness of elementary school vs. the later environment of angst and intensity during high school.

In sum: I think it's the players, not the games.

the thing that often kill it for most player now is they dont want to progress they want to be level 20 or level 50 or level 85 right now when they hop in@they dont want to read the lore written in books and all,in gw people went balistic when a new player hadnt seen the cutsceen was forcing them to view it lol.i bet probaly 5 % knew the lore of the game they didnt care lol
check in rift ,the prince of the high elves come in the first instance and grab what you go in there for they know this piece but they dont know what happens most dont do the optional stuff hell often they dont do the story stuff wich is required to have descent fun lol.then they arrive at level 50 having done almost no content and feeling like the game was boring.some are boring yes.in f2p this is very seeable.but try to remember how you played before and you ll see you skipped a lot less.true you did a lot of back and forth and had to use your memory
so you could trigger x,y,z stuff in game.now by skipping it all we see only 33% of the game.so who are we to say x game is boring when we see only 30% of the game lol.the 30% (or easy to see stuff)is often the boring stuff lol.

My first MMO was L2 and no, its defintely nothing I would want to play again. Some elements, sure. Castle sieges for one. But overall it wasnt fun.

Seriously its the only good oldschoolish mmo left that hasent been ruined by stupid expansions trying to cater to carebears or to get a peice of the WoW pie.

Ya I really really, REALLY hate xpacs. Frigin so stupid when they can just add the content at there own pace into patches.  Its just like a bad economy, start adding more suger topping to something and eventually it tastes horrible.

No, its like the first hit of cocaine or any other hard drug, the first time is your best time. And you keeping using it to get that feeling again. Sometimes you feel you might get there but you never do. Think about how many hours you've spent playing an mmo not really having a good time bored out of your mind. Now think about how many time you've tried to get your real life friends or even family to share in your playing MMO, another very common trait of a dope fiend. I'm not joking even slightly.

After your first MMO, nothing will ever be as good, so you have to rely on getting over them, or finding better ones(like a drug addict has to find better MMOs or something) which is something that may never happen because MMOs have barely evolved since the genre was made.
