Buying a new mmo, care to suggest?

Shablo5Shablo5 Member Posts: 20

Just feeling like buying a new MMO. B2P or P2P MMO's i've tried are:

Aion

Rift

WoW

AoC

EQ2

GW1 (SORT of. Gave it like... an hour of try. Idk, wasn't impressed)

Eve

I think that's all I can think of off of the top of my head. Feel free to suggest any other games to buy for PC only. I'm currently bouncing between Rift, SC2 and Heroes of Newerth. Don't judge me for what I play, just suggest a new PC title to buy.

Thanks <3

Don't bother worrying if it's 'not the mmo for me' . Just suggest it, I give anything a try once. If I can't find anything worthy of buying, i'll just sink the money into a preorder.

EDIT: I'd like to ask three questions:

#1 - Dungeons & Dragons Online - When you played through this game, did you honestly find you played through most of the instanced content solo? Or do you feel there are so many people that just make it all very much not-solo? Sorry if that doesn't make sense. I just didn't like GW1 because of the 'instanced' feel.

#2 - Lotro - Is this game worth it? I haven't tried it yet because of the setting it's in. I don't know how true it stays to the story/setting, but i've heard it's good. Is it really worth trying?

#3 - Aion - Does it get better endgame? Or does it just suck just as much as the grind does?

Thanks.

    Heh.

Well, i've also never tried World of Tanks yet. I know it's not either B2P or P2P but ... idk, i've liked FPS but the whole 'tank' thing seems rather silly to me. I'll get around to it, but I Just can't seem to find a good reason to try it yet.

This is not a MMORPG, but League of Legends has been getting a lot of attention. It looks like you named all the mmorpgs I can think of.

It's weird, I honestly feel like i've tried all the 'decent' B2P or P2P mmos out there. It's pretty sad that I can honestly get burn't out out of all the 'decent' mmos. Unless any of you have any I haven't thought about.

You've pretty much listed all the halfway decent B2P games.  The only two I can think of are Vanguard and Fallen Earth.

I'd reccomend trying the Vanguard free trial.  It's a good game, under supported, under developed and under populated. But its pretty solid.

Fallen Earth has a free trail too, I'm trying it right now.  It's been kind of buggy for me. The combat animations are awful. But it looks like it has some interesting elements.

I recently started playing it again (after having left it for a year)

theres plenty of grouping at low levels -- especially if you try the Cannith or Orien servers

I'm mostly doing pickup groups with strangers   (using the LFG ui)

-- the lower levels (read: under level 3) theres not enough groups

but once you are level 3, plenty of groups to be found in the harbor or marketplace

Why these servers? Are they like primary grouping servers?

There is a Looking for group tool that brings players together? Is this just for dungeons or also the instanced zones?

Also, how long does it take (In gameplay hours, average) to hit level 3? If I remember correctly, the leveling system is a tad different from regular MMOs, isn't it?

they are newer servers that launched 2 years ago, the other servers are much older

yes, levels do take longer, probably take 2-3 hrs to make level 3

    and if it helps

Alright thank you for answering my questions about DDO. I'd love to have my answers about the other two MMOs I mentioned in my first post if anyone can step up, and still, open to suggestions for a new game.  Don't feel limited 100% by MMORPG's either. Anything fun to pass the time for the next triple A titles.

  • eyceleycel Member Posts: 1,334

Hmm its funny I first thought of aion but you said you played that.  D@D online is worth at least a playthrough as well as LOTRO.  I dont really have anything else to add I suppose.  I like city of villians/heros, if you havent played that its for sure a good one.  Really Cryptic was one of my favorite game devs, when I had heard they had goton the rights to continue STO I was thrilled, I wasnt so thrilled with what came out but COH is a fun game to play.  I have an unused game box key to, its yours if you want it :)

I suggest not buying an MMO at all and getting something like Oblivion and using the many mods that people have made. Same with Fallout3 and New Vegas. Seriously. MMOs suck now if you hadn't noticed.

    1. Vanguard, the CE can still be found on ebay for cheap and the game is starting to turn around i think. alright i ll admit: i hope.

=) great crafting, great exploration, some of the more original dungeons ive seen in an mmo, an overall great pve game.

    2. Fallen Earth, they are going f2p but you ll get some benefits out of buying the box i think, aside from the 30 days free. different flavor of mmo. aren't many that come close to it.

    3. Rift can be fun for a short while.

    4. GW2 having said the above, if you decide to wait i would definetly look into preordering GW2 when it becomes available.

    okay as for your questions:

DDO really does have a fantastic combat system. many many people solo, but there is more to be gained in groups so you will stil find a lot of them, just be subscribed so you have full access or buy all the quest packs for your level range. however, those grouping in ddo tend be long time vets and they zerg. i mean they zerg harder and faster than real zergers. i didnt care for that part so i left.

LotRO is a fantastic game, very, very close to the lore, arguably there are some variances from the lore in the classes, but they did the best they could to provide basic fantasy mmo expectations w/o ruining the lore. personally i think they did a great job. if you do get this game, just preorder Isengard.

keep in mind it is a themepark. you can explore and there can be hunting and grinding if you want it, as well as crafting. there are plenty of little achievements along the way. almost everyone, no matter the race ends up in the Shire doing the pie, tavern, etc quests. and they are worth it.

Aion was not a grind really, as of last month, if you consider the term grind to mean: killing things over and over and over to level, like in Lineage 2. now personally i prefer the freedom of that kind of grind.

however, most people expect to simply quest to level and i believe, at least at the lower levels where i was, that they provided that experience now. for me personally grinding out quests, running back and forth constantly, that is grinding, but most folks prefer it.

    edit for non mmos-----

i have heard great things about Mount and Blade and its expansions. im looking into it myself.

I can only comment on this one. It is actually easier to put your balls in a vice grip and tighten it down hard then get gear out of a Aion instance. Actually it is much more enjyable and I have 2 broken monitors because of  Aion's version of "endgame"

    also, with Veteran status

    http://ddowiki.com/page/DDO_Store#Account

DDO offers the option to be instant level 4 on all new characters on all servers (for 995 TTP or around 15.00)

    - no wait at all for easier grouping

I have never understood the "P2P gone F2P and still have subscription" pricing model. Can you tell me what I SHOULD pay up front for the best experience? ANd I don't mean 'best' as in "PAY 5$ EXTRA/MONTH FOR 5 BANK SLOTS WOOO!" I mean BEST as in "PAY 15$ EXTRA AND GET 2 CLASSES AND THIS ZONE UNLOCKED AND XXX" Trivial shit does not interest me.

Also, what does boosting me to 4 really do for me? Two questions here ^^

So why is vanguard not as popular as many other MMOs if it is well recieved by the few I see here? Is there something people aren't telling me? :P

I will look into fallen earth.

How much money should I dump on LOTRO to get the best gaming experience? Refer to my part above in this same post about what the 'best gaming experience' is defined by me. Also, what do you mean 'preorder isengard'. Isn't LOTRO a f2p mmo? Are the expansion packs b2p?

you said you were concerned about the length of time it woudl take you to get to level 3

    - no one has to pay for vetertan status, you can earn turbine points in game

To my questions towards LOTRO and DDO about "How much should I sink in for the best gaming experience", I have no problem paying the amount of a box OR like 15-20$/month to get a prime gaming experience. So don't see it as me feeling it's "buy to win". I will pay the subscription fee, i'm just asking since most games like that have different tiers of subscription levels (Like perhaps 5$ 10$ 15$) and I was asking both of you, your opinions on how much I should sink initially or monthly to get the most out of my gaming experience, for shit that isn't trivial like bag space.

And I was just curious about the time it took to level 3 as it has been over a year since i've tried DDO if I recall correctly.

I'm sorry i misunderstood your curiosity as being a concern - no offense

there is also a promotional special if you sub to the game before Sept 10th

Just try vanguard. It was down due to no dev support, but soe has decided to grow the game. Check it out and see for yourself. There is a reason you don't see many people complaining about quality related issues. It's far and away the quality mmo on the market. And now it has support too. Take a peak and see what you think.

the best gaming experience for either game is obviously going to be subscription model. in LotRo at least this gives you 500TP every month you are subscribed to spend in the store on whatever you want, even expansions eventually.

as i mentioned in my post get the Isengard xpac and sub.

as for DDO im not sure. tbh i would just sub so i didnt have to worry about it.

I've went to both sites and it seems like they're both run on turbine points? ARe the points interchangable between games? Can 1 sub be used on both games?

Also, I can't seem to find the different level of subscriptions. Are there just 1? If so, how much do they cost per game? And then giving you free points every month... What is that all about? I mean, am I basically paying X amount per month for point renewal? Or does buying a sub = actual benefits? I can't seem to find anything on either site saying this. Sorry guys for the trouble.
