Skyrim Will Allow Same-Sex Marriage

firefly2003firefly2003 Member UncommonPosts: 2,527

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim joins the ranks of franchises including Fable, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect by allowing players to participate in same-sex relationships. If you don't think this is particularly mind-blowing, you're not alone. Bethesda's VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines says that the company wasn't trying to be secretive about the game's gay marriages, but that they're "just not making a huge deal out of it."

Marriage is new territory for the series, so it's not clear if...relations will be handled in animated vignettes, the way BioWare has approached the subject, or if they'll be more like Fable's turn-off-the-lights strategy. Regardless, expect to see this element taken out of context in the mainstream press. Meanwhile, nobody will make a fuss over the fact that you can set people on fire in the game.

In unrelated news, Hines also tweeted that Skyrim won't feature an arena or something comparable to it. That sound you hear is a million would-be pit fighters exhaling deeply in disappointment.

I really dont understand why the fuss around this subject.

There is a great number of civilized countrys who already allow gay marriage and even some US states I think.

Cant we just put this things aside and start seeing it as the normal thing it is? Really now, we are in 2011...

Arent there really important things to discuss about this games?

Fine with me.  Its their IP and they can darn well do what they like with it.

More options was never a bad thing.  This is not something I will indulge in personally, but Im sure someone out there will enjoy it.  People enjoying Skyrim.  Im all for it.

Its only when they DONT include something like this, and people loose their minds, that I sort of take offense.

I don't understand this misplaced anger. SWTOR is based on SW IP which has no history of same sex relations except for one or two characters which were hardly mentioned or made forgettable appearances in novels.

Skyrim well they can add what ever they want into it since it is not restricted by IP. Come on people use some common sense and understand the main reason behind it. Bioware has to do what LA tells them.

I have left games that program same sex marriage. I  understand the agenda of the developers..and refuse to have anything to do with them.

    I'm sorry... what?

I was too busy setting someone on fire.

Think of it like character customization...

If a game allowed you to customize your human character's skin tone... but only across light tones and no other options... you  think it's unreasonable that a certain group of people that might want those options might be a little upset?

Sometimes people want to model their characters based on themselves. Sometimes people want to create characters that are the antithesis of their real world selves. When you add customization options, and choices, offeringing the "mainstream" and neglecting the minority can get on certain people's nerves.

I for one applaud Bethesda for again proving to be a far more progressive and expansive content developer than Bioware.

The agenda may very well be to create a believable, real, honest world here.  Gay people exist.  Its proven by SCIENCE!  I saw some the other day.  They were holding HANDS and stuff.  Holy crap Batman!

But I promise you.  You can pick up Skyrim and never even begin to see it.  Never experience anything to do with it.  Its typically easily avoidable in most games that feature it.  They've even said they're not making a big deal about it.  They just threw it in there.

Elder Scrolls particularly has always tried to provide a sense of honest realism in their fantasy game.   It feels like a real breathing world, kind of like the one I live in.  So there's gay people in it.  So?

There's gay people in this world too!  Sometimes they kiss.  And do....other things.  Just like in Skyrim, Ill go about my day and just ignore it.   I promise you, you likely wont see men making out in the street in Skyrim.  If you see that in the real world which DOES happen do you just refuse to live?  Play the game.  Have fun.  Or dont.  I have a feeling if you dont you'll be seriously missing out.

I still don't get how these things warrant announcements or discussions. Its an every day thing and i find it quite sad that it really has to be pointed out in games.

Maybe its the people i grew up around but seeing things i take for granted being points for discussion just seems weird.

Good, I play as females, and I don't like to have to romance men.

Someone please make a good MMO.

People who have these feelings usually have a tendency to become gay themselfs.

There is nothing wrong with it, and if you are, you should come to terms with it mate. Nobody will judge you.

If adding same sex relationships is called being progressive well Bioware has already done it in their previous single player RPGS. You are talking as if Bethesda is first one to do it.

Moreover, SWTOR is restricted by SW IP and the end decision is taken by LA not Bioware. Skyrim has no such restrictions and they can do whatever they want.

That's cool though. This is the example we need from games in freedom and emancipation. Also we can now forgive them for stereotyping females (especially if you consider that men are just as stereotyped in most game anyway).

couldn't care less either way.  Like it was said before, it's 2011 let's move on.

Yea I kind of agree.  I dont remember these kinds of discussions in gaming once upon a time.  I honestly didnt even know Mass Effect had that option when I played it, and I sure has hell dont remember reading about it.  I did see some sort of romantic line of text in Dragon Age when I was talking to a guy.  My response was, " HAHAHA!  Oh no.  They didnt.  Hahaha....whatever...."

Suddenly its like this big issue.  Like....ALL of a sudden.  Does a game have romance?  If so does it have homosexual options?  I mean....what?

Maybe all games could just slyly put it in there so we can all shut the hell up about it.  Or remove it entirely.  I dont care.  But these discussions are pretty darn weird I'll give you that.  What bothers me I guess the most about it, is that I dont think anyone was really pandering for homosexual relationships when they started showing up in games.  Then they do, and now they've ALL got to have em.  If they dont.....burn the building down.

Im just glad Skyrim wont be getting the same crap that Swtor is.  Because Im really looking forward to Skyrim, and despite my personal sexuality, Id rather them put gayness into the game than have a thousand angry homosexuals going nuts because its not in there.  Now I can just focus on what makes the game a game.   We can talk about other things.  Thats a good thing I guess.

Bethesda does it far more tastefully though. When Bioware does same-sex relationships, it's usually treated with a skewed mainstream perception where the characters tend to fall into social sterotypes of behavior. When Bethesda does it, they're portrayed as normal people who just happen to be attracted to the same gender, which is far closer to reality than the mainstream perception that's filled with stereotypes.

It's marriage period whether it be male and female or same sex. I personally don't see the relevance in throwing  marriage into a game, yeah it makes it more like "real life" but seriously you'll probably do it once woohoo, kill your spouse and be done with it. Lol.

I think the "big deal" is that the view on gay relationships has moved to a view of people saying, "So what?" rather than, "OMG! Seriously!!11!1?!!1/1?!1/??!?1?" when added to mainstream things such as games in this case. Which is a good thing, when something like a gay relationship is just a normal, everyday thing and no one gives a rats ass anymore.

Same Sex interaction sounds nice. It's a free world game, why shouldn't you be able to flirt with the same gender? Because some imginary deity says "nonono, i said no." ?

ITS A GAME. If i want my girl character to get some girl on girl action, she better, or so help your god, I'll slaughter every npc in every which way allowable *insert evil laugh*.

They should simply leave all of this out of videogames all together.

    Spot on ^

Stop the press! New MMO includes washing clothes! 2011 MMO dares to have househusbands!

Every time i step out my house whether it be to work, visiting a friend or just walking down the street I see people being affectionate. Folks need to quit fighting for something that has been there for a long time, it's there we accept it as being human. The more its pointed out as being 'different' then the more the hate, discussions, arguements, only being able to look at your own side of the fence will continue. We don't live in the 1600's, we live in today. I say all this as being 99% straight.

    Games are games.

Why? It would make the game a lot more unrealistic.

So we want realistic graphics & phisycs....but we hate it when it is socially realistic??

    Stupid....

To me, I don't care if they allow sexual relationships with NPCs in a game or not.  My only concern is if they allow those relationships, all are to be included.  If not, the dev are pushing an agenda onto people which is wrong, IMHO.
