Some people who purchased Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PC from Gamestop stores might have been missing something of value from their box.  A coupon of the full game for use with Onlive.

Seriously, what is this company thinking?

Yesterday when I picked up my copy at my "usually cool" Gamestop, I was surprised to find the regional manager there along with the store manager (who has always been a cool guy, and the only reason I continue to buy from there -- I actually go WAY out of my way, passing 2 other Gamestops just to shop there).  First question - did you pre-order it?  I reply, "Nope.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it through Steam or in the box."  Then the new guy (regional manager) chimes in, completely dissing Steam and me for liking Steam, all so he could promote their new online distribution thing called Impulse.  I just laughed at him.

Later when I discovered that it was because of this new Impulse thing that he was pitching, that the Onlive copies of HR were pulled, I couldn't help but shake my head.  Luckily I got my copy before that email was sent to the stores.  But I feel bad for the other people who got jipped.

Personally I buy all my games off Amazon once they, or their "Game of the Year" version with all the DLC included, come down to $20-$25 dollars. Even if I absolutely had to buy a game on release I'd much rather get it from Best Buy than Gamestop. The people that hang out in those stores, and especially the employees, are just gross to be around.

Anywho, I find this story interesting because of how terribly they handled it. They've finally come to their senses and starting pulling the full game from their shelves, but at this point the damage is beyond done. There is absolutely no way the coupons would have hurt them anywhere near as badly as the fallout from this is going to.

  • So are they giving people discounted product, and letting them know that they are not getting the full contents of the box? I mean if not that seems highly illegal.

    Oh no you didn't...

It's spelled "gypped" and it's from the word gypsy, reflecting the belief that Gypsies (people from East India and the Balkan states) will cheat you or steal from you.
