Star Wars: The Old Republic: World PvP Details Revealed at PAX Panel

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

This afternoon's Star Wars: The Old Republic panel at PAX Prime brought details on one of the game's remaining features that hasn't seen much light: World PvP!

image

Highlights:

  • Many different neutral planets that players can fight over, with territory control.

  • There will be bases, turrets, and other objectives that players can control on these planets (Ilum is one example planet).

  • Can call in bombing runs on the enemy base once planetary defenses are down.

  • Valor (and other) rewards for players who participate. 'Mercenary' commendations can be earned via World PvP to purchase the best PvP gear.

Visit the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website for additional information on the game. We'll bring you a full write-up on the panel later in the week!

Territory control? Bases? Sign me up right now! This is very great news, I was afraid the world pvp would be the standard "kill if you cba for no rewards" but this!

    • So PvP does have an effect, how much of one i don't know but at least theres something to fight over in World PvP

    • There will be bases and turrets that players can control on these planets (Ilum is one example planet).

    • This one reminds me of War a lot with the first lake, where you could take control of a turrent and fire at the enemy, saw something similar in GW2, good to see its here as well.

    • Valor (and other) rewards for players who participate.

    • Good way to get gear i suppose

Looks like what the world PvPers were asking for. Not sure i'll attend myself will see how i fare but it looks pretty good from the highlights.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Now this is what us DAOC players are looking for. Hopefully it lives up to how it sounds. Also hopefully these are fairly large areas and not some tiny little area. It was always nice in DAOC to have such vast areas to explore and fight over.

Made my pre-order so much more valuable, awesome news!

? Impressive. Not exactly what I had expected, I thought things would be more localised, like a limited PvP area on a planet ('PvP lake') with quest/mission objectives.

Territory control and bases/turrets sounds nice, but I need to read more to see how that is worked out in detail.

Will keep an eye on this thread image

Can any able and awarded PAX nut dig if there's info about this feature being in PvE servers and the aproximate number of these neutral planets? I might aswell join PvE server for peaceful PvE, you know, relaxing after workday experience, and then take my ship to a warzone planet when I feel like :)

I always wanted a server in themepark mmo's which would have large designated PvP zones besides the basic voluntary-PvP PvE-quest zones, seems like TOR might have the answer.

Ok, I was hopping by at the official forums, this is what I found so far

    (source)

Will have open world PVP objectives. Illum is a big open world PVP planet.

-Illum will be territory control with planetary defenses that you can take out and call in bombing runs once they are down

-Their ultimate objective is to take down their base.

-Screen shots of large vehicles that help attack.

-You can earn PVP rewards through open world PVP. Mercenary Commendations. Mercenary and Warzone commedations will be used for the BEST PVP gear

Its mythics, pvp team and bioware,s story made into one.Say what u will about warhammer and other mythic games they did pvp right. from everythign ive read.

U take biowares rpg experiance and mythics pvp experiance and u have the ultimate team.

that said i like the objectives and terriotrial control i might actually do pvp in a game for a change. Combine that with the fact the bgs/ warzones in tor llook like alot of fun especially hutball. and i may do more pvp in my first month in game then i have done in almost 6 yrs in wow.

The world pvp does sound cool and they have said are a number not just one nutreal planet where u fight for territory which illum is one of them. Seems control of illum helps u control the lightsaber crystals also so i actually am excited for pvp in tor and i dont even like pvp usually.

Sounds great.  Although bad population ratio could be a serious issue.

Heh. SWTOR's questing feature (VO and cinematics, multiplayer dialogues, decisionbased branched questing, alignment system), Companion system (group back up, quest involvement, crafting and missions), and Crew Skills system are sizeable features that weren't in WoW as well. Even if those are meaningless and of no importance to you, that doesn't change the fact that those weren't in WoW at all.

One thing I'm waiting to hear is will this be timed like Wintergrasp and Tol Barad in WoW {letting only so many players in}, or will it always be an ongoing battle you can jump in and out of at anytime and points are accrued in real-time?

And yesch, I'm greatly looking forward to more news on the space missions.  I loved Starfox, and they appear to play out in a very similar fashion.

The question is will it have meaning? Incrementing your kills number just isnt enough.

Considering Bioware puts a back story on everything, Im sure there will be some motivation for both sides to wage war. You will also get currency that can be spent on exclusive gear. There's also a hint at earning pvp exclusive skills. I think there are also zone wide buffs in place for the victors of pvp objectives but Im not 100% on that. Oh and you can gain xp doing pvp.

Apparently taking over parts of the planet for your faction isn't enough for you?  I'm not sure what "meaning" PvP could have beyond that and some sort of "Badge" system.

I have to say that I am all about PvE

But this sounds pretty big and exciting. I will definetly give it a try once I get into the game.

My only "real"pvp experience has been in WoW, so here I am hoping that SWTOR has a more atractive formula.

Cheers and grats to the pvp-fans.

according to darth hater, the 5pm panel got cancelled /sad

  • red_cruiserred_cruiser Member UncommonPosts: 486

This would be great if they had a three faction system.  This is tough to balance with only a two faction system.  Hopefully, it's not a repeat of Wintergrasp and Baradin's Hold, though I fully expect it to be... unless they are planning on balancing servers by population.

I hope it wont have player cap, but the sound of it, considering it's supposed to be an end-game PvE planet too(?), is that you fight to capture the planet, so it perhaps has a "cooldown" when it's up for grabs again and untill then you can exploit the spoils of the planet for your faction. This is all speculation ofcourse but I cant come up with anything else with the given bits :)

Then again there's supposed to be more than one of these planets so lets hope they have a bit different mechanics and advantages.
