SWTOR: The next Warhammer?

These days I'm seeing alot of hype for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Both long time Star Wars IP fans and WoW haters alike seem excited, but is it for the right reasons?

I think a good amount of people remember Warhammer Online. There was BIG hype about it- The WoW slayer, the new DAOC, Warhammer Fantasy IP, etc etc...

And what happened?

Nobody's really sure how many players the game has nowadays. Maybe 100k at MOST? And that is a liberal estimate.

And then came Rift. Yet again, everyone cheered (and cheer) WoW Slayer, new big MMO, etc etc. And what happned? Yet again, everyone was disappointed. Now, not that Rift is dying like WAR is- it still has a decent playerbase, but I think they're heavily customizable class system will be their downfall eventually.

But this isn't a Rift bashing thread. This is about people yet again getting over-excited about a game, and then being SO SURPRISED when it turns out the game is either unfinished, under-developed, or just another clone!

Basically, I just wanna suggest that everyone do some legitimate research on a game before you scream "OMG SWEET EPIC GAME WOW SLAYER!"

This especially goes for SWTOR- I think that SWTOR will likely be a major fail, as many people are a bit too excited about the IP, perhaps moreso than the actual gameplay (like what happened in WAR).

The answer is 42 you idiot!

I've done research on the game.  Plenty of it.  And in no, way, shape, or form is it going to be "the next Warhammer."  That was a pvp game that was light on the pve, light on endgame, and unpolished.  SWTOR will be a pve-centric game (which appeals to the majority of gamers) with a good foundation in pvp as well.  And it will be smooth and polished at launch.  This is BioWare, after all.

Is it going to be a WoW killer?  No.  The only WoW-killer is Blizzard.  But this game will put a serious dent in the populations of WoW and Rift, and I feel will immediately vault to the #2 most popular MMO in North America.  With enough time, it could become #1.  I think people underestimate how good this game is really going to be, and how popular it will be.

    Warhammer?  Not.  Even.  Close.

The concept that was to be WAR was and to this day remains solid. Rift and GW2 devs would be lying through their teeth if they told you WAR had nothing to do with their event systems they both feature.  Even though WAR was undoubtable release too early  and  ruined itself with a very poor launch,  it has had a positive effect on the genre making way from the idea of PQ's now transformed into rifts and dynamic events.

And one last thing... Rift isn't dying... {mod edit}  Rift is the only  largely successful MMO to come along in a very very long time.

    No to OP.

My prediction: SW:TOR will be a huge hit, for many years to come.

There's just as much hype about GW2 and The Secret World as well. Going by your reasoning that big hype = major fail, will those games be the next Warhammer, or STO, or DCUO as well?

I agree that there will be sub drop-off of epic proportion, but I kind of see that like box office returns week 3 and 4 on a movie. There is no way that this game can possibly live up to the hype, just like WAR and RIFT couldn't, but I think that for those who follow your suggestion and see the game for what it really is (and what it will realistically deliver) it should be fine.

Massive Hype sets up disappointment, lack of good content (in whatever form) delivers on disappointment. SWTOR has one part of this formula already, but we won't know til release about the second variable.

personaly i think guildwars 2 will be the wow slayer

not because its going to blow everyone away but because

when people who play wow  try it and go back to wow which they will do they will be thinking

how come we need to pay monthly for this when guildwars2 offers more for no monthly fee

it will also drain away new players its a lot easier to sell a one time purchase than a monthly fee game

on top of this guild wars2  is probably going to be really good

even star wars will probably need to rethink its subscription model if they dont and both guildwars 2 and starwars are equal in fun then why would anyone pay monthly i wouldnt

starwars will have to be 10 times better than guildwars 2 to justify the subs

The problem with games like AoC and Warhammer is they had massive glaring issues in beta that testers constantly told them to fix, but the devs never listened. Also if you go back and you look at original videos and screenshots of AoC, you will see that the end result of what launched, is nearly a different game than what their original vision was.

Bioware has stuck to what it has wanted SWTOR to be, and we can hope this means they know what will work and what doesnt.

Hype does not equal fail, bad games that are hyped do.

It's possible.  I think The Old Republic will have a solid player base.  Definitely not WoW's, but WoW's major subs come from the Eastern market.

Anyways, I think any MMO could fail.  It just depends on what you're going for- what your style is.  I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, but I don't care to play TOR.

Warhammer was a great idea and would have been amazing if it wasn't released so early.  But... that's life for ya.

To me GW2 is more hyped yet people on mmorpg aren't going crazy about that.  It's only the big budget ones that threaten them that get attacked.

    TSW is the next WAR.

GW2 and SWTOR will do well enough.

Ok but where is the reasoning behind the post?

Warhammer had huge issues, beta players were even screaming that it had issues.

Rift? Rift felt very under the radar until it started aggressive marketing. As far as players screaming "wow killer" why would anyone actually take any of that stuff seriously? Based on what? on a few things the devs said and then wishful thinknig from players with axes to grind?

I've seen SWToR in action and many people are playing it at game shows. I know people in Beta.

It is a very known quantity with a lot of money backing it.

Will it be huge after release? Not sure but it doesn't have the same set up and issues that warhammer had. And it certainly seems to have more to do than Rift.

I'm not concerned over SWToR. It is not following in warhammer and rift's footsteps.

Actually, Rift is doing very well. Warhammer released too early and was an incomplete game. All Bioware has to do is to release a game that actually runs and has all the stuff shown in the videos to not be the next Warhammer.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

No chance in hell, If anything Swtor is the next WoW, Bioware=win, Star Wars=win no matter how you look at it there is no chance for this game to fail.

If this game fails then all MMO will fail from here on out, the amount of money they put into this game for it to fail will show the MMO world that no matter what you do MMO's have peaked with WoW and will die out like the VCR, MMO's will be proven to be a short lived fad.

For the Future of ALL MMO's you better hope this donsn't fail because if it does no other MMO company will ever invest alot of money into making one, we will be forever stuck with half ass unfinshed games due to fear of failure.

  • ThekandyThekandy Member Posts: 621

SW:TOR is overhyped for sure, but i don't see a failure forthcoming, neither financially nor critical.

Bioware just need to have a long-term plan to go along with their brand and goodwill, and as far as i can see they've got it.

  • etlaretlar Member UncommonPosts: 863

"WoW Slayer" who cares, but an mmo made with storytelling by bioware in a sci-fi setting, with some traditional, yet cool features, and a few new, i care, and im looking forward to play it :)

Pve-centric? did u read the latest news about endgame opvp? it will be probably the MMO with most pvp content of the market but warhammer. The game have battlegrounds, Opvp in the pvp servers and RvR announced in the last PaX, swtor will have neutral opvp planets (even in the pve servers) with objetives and territorial control where players need to fight to capture towers to call bombers, attack vehicles with the final goal of capture the enemy base, thats RvR ¨a la warhammer rvr lakes¨, It doesnt look like just pve-centric MMO, and even in the pve servers people gonna need to do some ¨RvR/opvp¨.

I can tell you from first hand ex. This game IS good. It will not fail by any realistic standards. It is already polished with bugs getting fixed quickly as they find them. The content is great, the ART STYLE works well. Grouping is fun, Huttball is crazy fun (and different).  People who are looking for a good game will like this one. People who want a WoW killer will look elsewhere. People who are just trolls will troll.

Honestly, why is every new game that comes out supposed to be a "wow-killer"?because the game has new ideas or tweeks a current system that better fits that game. This game isnt like WoW..just because its a mmorpg doesnt mean thats what its trying to do"take down big bad WoW". Everyone knows WoW came out at the right time and place...it suited harcore and not so hardocre players...and it worked...that plus a aggressive ads and you have a golden game..

As for being over hyped and super hyped...lets face it its starwars...the name hypes its self up..IMO regardless of what anyone says you automaticly have a standard in your mind what this game should be like for you and for anyone really to say this is way to hyped then i think you need to take a look at the fables...meaning 1,2 and three...hell take at look at black and white...i mean really sit down and really think about whats really being hyped up...Most of the things in this game sure you have seen before but what really is being hyped is the voice acting..and they hit that one on the head no other mmorpg does this and its not like you can go well..."wow has better VO than this game so it FAIL"..its a unique part of this game and it has every right to hype it....wasnt aion like flight and wings? im pretty sure tera is hyping up there combat system...

    Just MO..

And yet it also has 100+ hours of unique leveling content per class, crew skills system, space missions, companion system, datacron system, legacy system, social rewards system, flashpoints, operations, and personal housing.

Best of both worlds, imo :)

Oh and did its worth mentioning that everything hikaru and I listed above is launch day content.
