The Empire and the Rebel Alliance have fought a long and bitter conflict, and only one side can emerge victorious.
That's the message being sent by Sony Online Entertainment as the company prepares to shut down the long-running Star Wars Galaxies servers on December 15th.
In advance of the galaxy-ending event, the Galactic Civil War is going into overdrive. New options for winning Galactic Civil War points will be added into the game, and the two opposing factions will go head to head and each server will have a designated winner. The final moments of the game on each server will be different depending on who wins. "Celebrations will be in order for those who win and, for the losers, let's just say they'll be going out with a bang," explains a post on the game's official site.
In addition, neutral players will be allowed to opt out of the conflict and host their own game shutdown events if desired.
If you want to play through to the end of the game in December, you need to be an active subscriber on September 15th. Afterwards, no additional fees will be applied for new, old, or returning players.
We're not weather forecasters, but we put the chance of Death Star at 99% for this final event.

The Empire of course, silly Rebels, the universe is for us!
The rebellion off course.
Imperial dogs are enslaved by the Sith (if you make one mistake or fail one mission, you are very much dead, if they don't kill you we will)
Need numbers to win (it's elite troops get whiped out by an army of ewoks)
Refuse to get any kind of technology (unshielded starfighters, yeah they care absolutely 0 about you)
Make 50 shots and maybe the 51th get a hit on something / someone (stormtrooper aiming capabilities)
Yeah the empire sucks at everything big time lol.
completely involuntary, but the first thing that came to mind when reading the title was the meme about arguing on the internet being akin to winning the special olympics. Reading the post more it sort of falls in the same category though. Winning or losing will have no persisting effect and the game will still be closed.
I think Troneas' assessment is pretty close. On the other hand, at least they are trying to make it fun on the way out. Sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation for SOE I suppose.
edit: also, Empire ftw.

Maybe if SOE did this years ago...
Yeah but that didn't stop the Ruskies.
Pretty much what I would post.
Its too late to make up for what they did to this game. Yet Its really cool for them to at least to something. They could easily just do nothing and let it die silently.
Joshua: A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
This should be a truly epic battle between the 6 people left playing this game!
Dang, you beat me to it!

When I played SWG way back preCU days the rebels outnumbers Imps by nearly 2 to 1. Unless the devs factored in some sort of huge advantage to being an Imperial I highly doubt they can live. And this is coming from a ex Imperial player.
Never trust a screenshot or a youtube video without a version stamp!
SOE wins - every player that is there at the end PAID!
Not every player paid, those who did not use their 45 days until Aug 1st, are good to the end without paying
Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
I never used my 45 days and I still don't care to not even if only to see the carcass of this game get beaten one more final time. So I agree with Tux,
SOE wins.
SWTOR Wins
Do your math again. You're good until Sept 15th. You'll need to sub from Sept 15th-Oct 15th.
EVERY player will PAY something. It's been stated by SOE on their forums that the 45 days will NOT get you the free pass to Dec 15th.
They'd have played it anyway. BiowarEA doesn't care about SWGs players.
They changed their policy near the end of the last month.
Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
Sure they do, they want your subs just like SOE did
As I said...the SWG people will play it no matter what. SWG's meager population is certainly not what BiowarEA is after...they're aiming much higher.
My apologies - I had not seen that announcement.
It looks like Star Wars fans will never have a decent MMO to play
From what I heard SWG was awesome.
Don't worry, I'm in the same boat. I'm not a star wars fan even remotely, but I am a kung fu fan and know that I'll never get a true martial arts game with retarded looking magic sparkles and doing nothing but smacking around wolves and blue tigers. I think maybe in 10 years when we have some fresh mmo devs, we'll get some decent games coming in.
