Star Trek Online: Computer Ed Interviews Dan Stahl

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In a new interview conducted late yesterday afternoon, "ComputerEd" had the opportunity to talk with Star Trek Online Executive Producer Dan Stahl. The interview commences with a discussion about Wednesday's bombshell that STO would be going F2P by the end of 2011.

"Free to play is liberating in many ways. It liberates development. It liberates our ability to say, 'You know what? You don't have to buy our game to try it. You don't have to make that $15 a month investment just to see if it's a game you'd like.'" Stahl says in the interview.

It's a great peek into the F2P decision for STO in what we believe is the first "official" interview on the subject. Head over to ComputerEd to hear the rest.

Refund me 80% of my lifeteime subscription price and I am cool with F2P.... Jackasses...  Of course they think it's liberating, now they have our moneies...   This game was a major disappointment from the start anyhow

Lifetimers lose nothing by the game going F2P hybrid. You get everything you do now plus more: a monthly stipend of points to spend in the game store or save up. The free version of the game will have a number of limitations: less character slots, inventory space, uniform options, ships, etc. You'll automatically get the full amount of all of those things, plus the previously mentioned stipend, so your LT sub will continue to be worth the money after F2P as it is now.

I have to agree with the Nagus, F2P does not hurt Life Time Subscribers at all. You will be having full access to the game and not paying any more than you have, still putting you above the subscription people that are above the free players in the access chain.

Sorry but how is the fact that sto is going f2p a 'bombshell'?

Hasn't it been expected for months?

The part I hate about it going F2P is that for the last few months we have gotten no content while they work on low level player improvements.  The idea is to make the game more attractive to the NEW players coming in with the F2P model.  Thats great but why do these developers always think it is such a great idea to ignore the CURRENT players?  Why do the paying customers always seem to get the shaft while developers target that hypothetical NEW customer?

All we get are "re-mastered" episodes and "improved missions" which means they are too lazy to make new content so they will just make a few changes to what they already have.  Ands whats with the big "liberated" PR spin?  If the F2P model was so frick'n great, why didnt they use it in the first place?

I feel bad for Dstalh in many ways.  He got stuck as the front man after many bad decisions were made by Zinc, Dollar Bill and Emmert.  F2P may help the game to break even and stay afloat but STO will never be what it could have been, what it should have been.  Me, I'll be playing ToR for the next year while my deeply regretted lifetime sub C-points accumulate.  Maybe in a year or two I will find the will to play STO and finally get a char to Admiral.  Then I can use those points on pay2win stuff like ships with phaser lances and federation cloaks.

"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game."  - SEANMCAD

Well, here we go. The blind people are letting these company's run us into this model with the F2P taht in the end are going to cost us more money then the monthly subscriptions. Way to go blind people.

well we can speculate all we want, this week it they will announce how it's gone work.

Dstalh already mentioned that those who are lifers or still pay for a account will me stipped getting a amount of C-store points a month so virtually even the item store (C-store) is gone be free so as a lifer or subscriber you still keep playing the game for free whit the even more free stuff if you save up you're monthly C-store points & everything you ever unlocked even when you don't pay for a sub anymore you will keep nothing will be restricted.

Every game has it bugs everyone is always so negative I can say this much I have not seen many games whit such beautiful in-game graphics ever, yes their is a short on content but that keeps getting added slow but stately

Hey & it's Star Trek if you're not fan of the IP don't play it.

You're going to have a hatred of free to play games when you play garbage like Combat Arms. Play one of the many decently put together titles and your view will quickly change.

Well he's desperate for revenue of course. I love MMORPG's word "bombshell" to try and hype this up (any company that advertises with them seems to get these articles that try to portray something "huge" is happening).

Anyway, do people still play this cowpat of a game?
