During PAX, En Masse Entertainment invited small groups of journalists to visit the Seattle-based studios to get a hands on look at TERA. One of the biggest revelations of the event was the first-look at server PvP. MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy has a first-hand report on what he saw and offers a few thoughts as well. Read on!
Producer Chris Hager and Associate Producer Stefan Ramirez took seats at the front of the room to run us through a brief presentation. There game, they told us, is about two things mainly: action and depth. The action part comes from their True Action Combat, and the pieces that make up this system. First and foremost as we all now know, the combat is not auto-target centric. Without your mouse reticule over the monsters, you won’t hit them. The same goes for the healing mechanics in many cases. You watch your enemies, and you track them with your mouse while you attack. And there’s no queuing of spells either: you press the button, and they happen. Some may charge up, but they’re all reactive.

Curious about the SvS pvp and how "open" it will be. Good call to add afeature like that, in my opinion. Having fast paced, real time combat is nice but it's even better if the pvp content is engaging enough.
My brand new bloggity blog.
I like how they are doing a lot of things different here, I think the mmo scene needs that. However, I not sure of the reasoning to having the ability for someone who rose to 'power' in one of the territories to do stuff like turning off the AH or jacking up prices on things. Is there hope that people will try and rise against this? I guess.
You could also end with a zone nobody wants to go to anymore either. Guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.
so what is server vs server? is it basicly everyone from one game world vs people from another copy of the same gameworld?
This game has so many nice features, but guess I will need new hardware due to its good graphics.
I am so torn about this game. I want to try it out, but I dont want to spend money on hardware for a game whose graphic style I dislike :-/
Played the Korean beta and i have to say that the game was running supersmooth on maxed graphics in 5 man dungeons. One word : UnrealEngine
So this and Guild Wars 2 might be my main MMOs(Guild War 2 will be top though I mean hell no subscribe) but server vs server type stuff is cool. I also like combat in mmos were you can actually say "You can swing at nothing!!!" lol
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
"The story covers the entire expansive world of over 80 zones with 25 cities and villages, and over 1,000 quests to take you from beginning to end of the tale (and beyond as content updates land)."
Dude, you are competing with TOR & GW2 & TSW and this is the best you got? All these 3 titles have massive VO. Who cares if the world's best author is writing the story. If only 10 people out of 1k are only reading it than it is no good.

We'll find out how Tera rallies against the NA titles.
No MMO has done VO except for AOC tortage which we hear good things about.

I wonder the titles you mentioned, if they ever advertised for their VO? Even if, they really have VERY LIMITED VO, the likes of FFXIV if I'm not wrong. So that really is no good.

Anyways...back on topic
Just some visual representation for those who havent seen it before:
I am interested. I saw the Gamescom trailer or the Old Republic and decide that I care nothing about playing that game. It is Star Wars and really doen't look any different from what I see from other MMOs and the story isn't enough for me to sit through that.
TERA has a lot of cool stuff to me and I do play for story. I will play after I am done with the story but having a great story is one that gets me through to the end content. That is why I like stories. I just keep hoping for a time where the worlds are more dynamic where the kill X quests are less. I understand the kill 10 rabbits to make rabbit stew for a village but kill 10 rabbits to stop them from eating a garden when there are 100+ rabbits there is silly. I hope that overall the storyline quests keep me from those type quests.
I'll try and explain this server/server thing...
In the winter patch there is going to be large scale PVE events called "Dark Crevices". Dark Crevices will randomly appear in zones and spawn large scale monster invasions which players will have to fight off together. They are supposedly raid type monsters.
These monsters will drop items called "Dream Shards" (These are fragments of Arun and Shara's dream which contains the power of the world of TERA). Using these "Dream Shards" a guild can open up a "Black Crevice" to port them to a massive city called Agaia and it's surrounding lands.
Multiple servers will be able to compete for Agaia. It will be a RVR territory with the controlling server getting the Super BAMS, resources and loot.
You can also invade other servers by using a "Black Crevice" in Agaia to port you to that other server.
To balance out the power, the server matching will change depending on how many "Dream Shards" guilds have collected on a server.
For people that don't like PVP, there will be a floating city and surrounding lands above Agaia called "Juras Ark", that will be PVE only. Although some BSH devs have mentioned that a PVP guild could launch a attack from "Juras Ark" and to use as a floating fortress, to attack down below to "Agaia". There are going to be Dragon flying mounts you can purchase there, as well as a secret new 9th job you can aquire!
According to BHS "Juras Ark" and surrounding lands can only be acquired via PVE politics and the policies made through the Juras will be server wide, affecting more than one continent. . (that's all the info I know atm)
The one thing TERA has going for it is the combat. nothing else is spectacular in any way. its a copy paste Korean MMO with a new gimicky combat system (that really isnt all that "new" to begin with). quests are boring and grindy... crafting is useless and RNG based. political system will be pretty cool... for like a small handful of people but if your not one of those people it wont matter to you. once you get over the "newness" of the combat system theres not much to keep you engaged. its kind of sad... the game itself has so much potential its crazy but that potential is being squandered.
This game sounds awesome. Too bad I cant get over these oversized weapons and pre-teen girls wielding said weapons. It is simply too absurd...
Would be interesting to hear what Freud had to say about this.
My gaming blog
This game will be epic all the hyph on STWOR is a little to much game looks like clone wars online made into a mmo this looks much more promiseing
I believe you were playing a warrior! Not a slayer! Slayers have one sword :P
Really hard to get excited over a game that is on its deathbed in Korea
If a KOREAN doesn't like your grind game you know something is really wrong
Tera does suffer from alot of problems, but being a grind game isn't one of them. In fact the grind is so lite, that it is one of the reasons why the koreans don't like it very much.
So what you mean is Koreans build this game and hope it will amuse foreigner over the world, despite even their native players dont like it?
Probably not going to happen. But let's see how it holds up in NA.
