It's amazing to me that this question hasn't been thrown out there by any of the gaming sites i've been to since these announcements have come about. We first started seeing this outside the box thinking with Rift. With SWTOR and GW2 and WildStar and a few choice others coming out, it begs the question, "What will the older games do to compete with features of the new games?"
With things like AOE looting (Rift), Dynamic Classes (Rift), Persistant Random Encounters (GW2), Group Area Questing (WAR, Rift, GW2 (possibly SWTOR i dunno), Voice Actors on more npc's (SWTOR), Easy Rep Grind (LOTRO), Dynamic Housing (GW2, LOTRO), Dynamic Cosmetics (Aion, LOTRO (the only two systems i know)), I'd like to know what the the devs of the current games will do with their games to catch up. Surely features can't be patented or can they?
And why isn't the gaming community demanding more from the Devs on the current games with the long ago announcements about these features. I know i demanded Cosmetics, Dynamic Events, and Random Encounters from Blizzard in their forums when it began to surface in other games because I feel that since I'm paying for a gaming experience and we all know Blizzard hasn't been hurting for money, the gaming experience should be the best it can be since every MMO is the model of upgradable software companies who make tons of money from their titles should be required to follow the "customer is always right" Rule and improve upon their original design as the entire industry does. Why don't more people especially those who are in the press write about these questions? (or am i missing the articles?) Why are online presences like TotalHalibut the only ones demanding better quality games?

They probably aren't that much of a concern to them. For example, I don't really care for LOTRO's housing or VOs. Public quests and proximity looting are neat but I don't pine for their presence in the MMOs I play that don't have them.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Every time.
The old games will live on, probably won't lose many subscribers and WoW will most likely remain 'king'.
And most probably, they won't change. However, when WoW starts losing massive numbers of subscribers I can see them going extreme (They make billions from WoW) and completely redoing the graphics, world and character models from the ground up, adding voice acting etc etc... But not yet.
I suspect they'll do the same as MMO developers have always done:
Swipe the best ideas from other games, and leave the bad ideas behind.
Blizzard's always been particularly good at it, for example.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I don't think the older games would be threaten by the new and upcoming games. First of all if you are an old follower of the game and you already spent more, you have to think twice before moving on to other games. Developers will just look to other games and adapt some of its possible features in the older game so it is a plus for them. But in the end who knows it depends upon the taste of the player.
Well I think older games does a thorough research through the new games and will enhance it for good. And propably they could launch / patch a lot of expansions continously. Just like how ragnarok online does. Innovation and accumulating new ideas were only few factors to triumph. Loyalty of the players are also considered to maintain the stability and existence of their game.
the only one that really has to worry is World Of Warcraft because that's the only one Star Wars the Old Republic is competing with. All the other games that are out there and available are either dying or they have their small niche market of people that are going to play no matter what. Anybody who still playing age of Conan or even Warhammer are good to stick around if they've been there this long. World of Warcraft has a whole lot of changes coming up with the appearance tab and the new rate that's going to bring death weighing and all that stuff. Patch 4.3 for World of Warcraft is pretty much their last-ditch effort to get people to come back to the game for cataclysm. World of Warcraft's best days are behind it by now it's just been around too long and people are just ready for something different and there's not much that blizzard can do to bring that many people back.
No no no a thousand times no. The customer is mostly wrong, the customer doesn't work in the industry or understand how anything works. The Customer thinks that every other class is overpowered and should be nerfed, that Pv(P/E) is more important than Pv(E/P), and any number of other stupid things.
The game devs don't always know what is right, and sometimes they make some pretty bad mistakes (NGE) that are apparent with hindsight. But they are still a far better candidate for making choices than the idiotic mass known as the playerbase.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.
Heh , your question cannot be processed into a logical anwser since it needs to be asked the other way around , what do new games need to do different to compete against the old ones?
All those new games you mentionned , want to bet that all of them combined won't even come close to what Maple Story currently have? Player base wise of course , since all games are measured by player base these days. Throw graphics around the room all you want , at the end of the day , the one with the most player base wins the game in this tough MMO business. Now let me ask this question since we've gotten this far : What do companies need to do differently to steal some player base off Maple Story / WoW? It might seem hard to anwser for most people here , but the anwser really ain't hard , just long to translate into an understandable anwser for most. :P
The thing is that THE so called "NEW GAMES" have the same core design as the OLD.
Quest...jad jada voice overs WHO gives a shit you gona be clicking them away anyways......
Battlegrounds... static boring... jada jada
Classes... Jada jada.. replay value.. not interested..
Holy trinity.. been done to death if I have to tank and spank another monster I will kill myself...
Its just the same old shit we have seen since 2004... I blame sucky developers for not pitching good ideas to Investors.. Someone have to be brave enough and say... Okey this game has 10m subs.. But if we make the exact same game with the same fetures these people wont be coming to play OUR game. They have allready played it for the PAST 7 years LOL. And we wont get the people WHO quit that game because those people clearly dont want to play that type of game...
So its going to be epic FAIL once more...
Age of conan, aion, star trek online, champions online, WAR etc.... list goes on FAIL FAIL FAIL, They all dident understand that players just cant be bothered with jet Another COPY CAT GAME..
For me its Easy I only whish I had the dam money to make my own game, so I could play what I wanted to play. And you know I bet many of you would think it was fun Inovating and fresh compared to the SHIT we see coming out of the Industry today...
Sadly I dont think gaming studios take Pitches or I would try to get it accross that WHAT the MMO idustry needs is something new.. No quest, no BGs, no classes per say AND NO FUCKING HOLY TRINITY....
for those of you who dont know what the holy trinity is its ( dps, tank, heal) BORING.. its time for a fusion game I know exacly how it should be made to be honest..
And even EVE is dying with the dam Incarna bullshit so I guess I have to play LOL(league of legends) and world of tanks instead... Both of those games have more inovation then any of the shit that the MMO industry has come out with in the last fucking 7 years.. also gona play some spacemarine on my xbox360 its fun like hell...DEATH FROM ABOVE!!!
What will the old games do? Open cash shops and make millions selling sparkly flying mounts.
They goto the Island of lost toys.
No worries rudolph will save them
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
I don't get it, why would anyone need to keep up with those? None of those features are the least bit desirable, they are just inventions that pollute and water down what an MMO is supposed to be in an attempt to attract a lesser quality of gamer.
Dynamic cosmetics maybe get an exception: that is the only feature out of that list that actually lives up to the ideal of creating a character that can truly be yours, instead of another cookie cutter image out of the developer's grab bag.
