Star Trek Online: F2P Info Center Debuts

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Thanks to a tip from MMORPG.com user JMcGrath, we now know that Cryptic Studios has posted a new Star Trek Online F2P Information Center.

The information center has the official press release, a matrix outlining the differences between Silver (free) and Gold ($14.99/month) memberships, and a handy dandy FAQ.

One of the more important pieces of information is what will happen to current subscribers and those who already have a Lifetime Subscription:

Q: I'm currently a regular or Lifetime subscriber to Star Trek Online. Where do I fit in?

Regular subscribers become Gold Members automatically. Subscribers are charged a regular fee based on one of the several subscription options they have chosen. Lifetime subscribers, also Gold Members, are those players who have opted to pay a single one-time fee for Gold Membership.

If you stop subscribing, you become a Silver Player. If you have characters that use Gold features, you will be unable to play them as a Silver Player until they are converted.

Lifetime subscribers also become Gold Members automatically and will not be charged a continuing subscription fee. Basically, nothing changes for Lifetime subscribers: They continue to have complete access to the same content, items and episodes the way they always have.

Find out all there is to know about the F2P version of Star Trek Online.

It seems they went with an approach somewhat similar to CO, but the end result is much better because of the different nature of these games. Only thing that really sticks out is the inventory limitation and a lack of respecc.

This game took longer than I thought to go to F2P, but it still incites zero interest in me.

Now, when DCUO goes F2P...that I'll be looking forward to.

just shut the game down, its a shame Craptic had the opportunity to work with such a famous IP.

They've always had their rip off stuff: monthly fee + item shop so nothing changes.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

I'm actually very surprised, the F2P gives you just about everything except a bit of storage space.  You can play all the game episodes for free.  If I was a subscriber, I would drop the sub and go F2P.  Cant see paying $15 a month for a bit of storage space and some c-points.  You would be better off doing a one-time payment for the things you want and then not having to worry about the sub fee ever again.

Interesting to note what they have to say about the Klingon faction. The new way of purchasing ships could be interesting as well.

As a Lifer, it looks good to me. Not much changes, and I'll get 400 points a month. Not sure what the value of those points will be until we see what stuff is going to cost though.

As the game is quite good and didn't seem lacking for players this news will only make it better!

they pretty much have lack of respec now as it is, it's something you get for free when leveling but then when you use it end game the only way to get more is to buy it. No different now really accept many people will pay to do it more F2P so it might end up being their best seller.

I would love to confirm the 400 cpoints a month thing for lifers but didn't see it anywhere in there, do you have the link?

     *coughs* Everquest II Extended...ahem

I just thought I'd put that out there. Although, I'd agree with him anyway. Even though EQ2X, Free Realms, and Star Wars: Clone Wars are their F2P games, I think that they'd shut DCUO down like they're going to do with SWG.

Of course I think this 'cause I believe they should. Even if DCUO is made F2P, it's still going to be #3 of 3 (IMO: #1=CO because of character creator, #2=CoX because of age which means more content, and #3=DCUO) because, frankly, CO and CoX are already F2P (well CoX will be F2P with Freedom by the time DCUO goes F2P).

Seems Cryptic is now admitting they've completely failed with the KDF faction. DStahl said: "just look at my track record for making the improvements that I said we would with the KDF and judge by that." (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=3481328)

Now, how can anyone say Dstahl isn't a failure? They've had over 1½ YEARS to create content and have done a really miserable amount in that time. This level 25 Fed requirement is a complete cop out by Cryptic.

Blaming everything on big bad Atari doesn't work either, because Cryptic sold themselves on promise that they will churn out a full-fledged MMO every 2 years.

This is probably the least limiting free to play I have ever seen.

Interesting that they talk a LOT about "Free to Play" but ABSOLUTELY nothing on "Free to Play Activation Keys".

Anyone know where to get a "F2P" Activation Key?

I dont think it has gone free to play yet.  Has it?

Anyways Im looking forward to playing again.  Most think this is a bad game.  Well I refused to pay $15 a month for it after the first couple of months.  But Im ready to jump back in.  I'll stay F2P.

If I were to play for longer than a couple of months and enjoy it, I might buy some C-Store things as well.  Id still advice Cryptic to not overly limit F2P players.  If I feel too limited Im not going to play.  And if Im not playing I cant buy anything from your store.

But the limits here seem okay.  Im not fond of the limited storage space, and energy credit limit though.  If its too limiting, I'll just forget it.
