nothing like jumping to conclusions.......
They have something like 10k perma beta testers aside from those who did the beta weekend. They may just have realized that the data they got from their perma beta testers is the exact same data they got from the weekend beta testers and decided not to deal with the hassal of new people being unable to play each weekend due to issues such as downloading or other such reasons.
They also said the reason for cancelling beta weekend is because they are releasing a new build of the game. They will have to test that new build again before they can release the game. And no word on when the new build will be released atm.

Seems to me you are jumping to a supremely unsupported conclussion. Way to go screaming "Armageddon" because of a minor rain storm. I actually feel bad for BioWare now because any time they actually do anything to keep us informed, they get this kind of crap rammed down their throats.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
They're also adding new waves of beta testers all the time. 2 people I know just got in.
Also, they give pretty good reasons for not having a beta testing weekends in the linked post. One of them was that they have a massive new game build in the pipe that they need to do more internal testing on first.
I hope they learn from this and go back to their old policy of keeping quiet about things.
Bioware never said that there would be more than one this month, or any month for that matter, just that there would be weekend tests coming up (one of which has already occured). They have done exactly what they would, and if people assumed otherwise that is completely out of there control.
Then they take the time to inform the community that there won't be one this weekend - a gesture of communication meant to ensure that people don't wait around for a possible invite, and somehow that equates to a negative and a possible delay? How did you ever come to that conclusion?
Agreed, loose lips sink ships.
Darn...I just signed up too. Well I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks for the heads up on this
Off topic a little bit: anyone know how long it takes to get the initial email to activate your account? They said they were going to send me an email for signing up but I have yet to recieve it. I signed up about an hour or so ago for time reference. Does it take 24 hours or so? (I know sometimes that happens and with a game this popular it wouldn't surprise me heh)
Do you want some cheese with that whine?
I'm not worried about it. I hear from some sources that there are some nasty game stopping bugs in the current build. So this should be the fixes for alot of them.
My thoughts FANTASTIC.
Its good to see an MMO developer prepared to sacrifice hype in the name of quality, to make unpopular short term decisions to achieve long term rewards. The more short sighted people who dont understand what beta tests are about will decry this as some kind of massive debacle, fact is they are doing the right thing for the right reasons and inspite of the fact it could have a negative imact on their "hype".
I for one am very reassured about this, very.
Actually they said it would be all of september
I agree with you i think most people want in on the beta to "play" the game and not actually test it. Which is the main purpose for a beta.

Could've sworn I read that the new build should be released by the 3rd week of Sept, and its greatly needed! There are, lets say, tons of minor no-brainer features missing that every MMO should have already had during the alpha build...
Bioware has got to step it up if they think they'll get this out before the end of the year, course holiday 2011 does run until Feb anyway...so I suppose we'll see!
Pretty sure it's just this site. I keep up on a few others and the community isn't nearly as negative and hateful.
This place reminds me of LoL/Dota/HoN style communities sometimes! So much hate!
Bet if you took all the haters and had them magically build any MMO they could imagine, it would fail horribly and even those who created it would talk shit about it!
Say it with me now! Say it loud, say it proud, SWTOR is V A P O R E W A R E ! ! ! ! !

"Hello all, There is no Beta Testing Weekend scheduled for this weekend. There may be further Beta Testing Weekends during September, but we're not going to guarantee it. The weekend that just finished was really our first dry run of Beta Testing Weekends as a whole, and we have plenty of data to crunch, and decisions to make before we start things up again. Further to that, as Chris Collins explained in another thread, we are about to roll out a major new build for The Old Republic. That build won't be ready for this weekend. Just as we did not feel it was a good decision to ask potential EU testers to download our client only to have to download it again, the same applies for this weekend. That does not mean, however, that as soon as our new build is available we'll be rolling out a Beta Testing Weekend immediately. As with any new build of the game, we need to get feedback from internal testing and our ongoing Game Testing program before rolling it out to a massive audience. That process takes a while, and that time varies depending on how testing goes. We rolled out this previous weekend as a relatively small scale event; from now we will do bigger and bigger events, but that doesn't mean it happens every weekend. When we do resume, we'll be inviting many more people in. While many of you are excited and anxious to know what's happening regarding Testing Weekends, I want to point out that a lot of posts on the subject with a lack of corresponding posts from us does not mean that we're not listening, or not aware of your interest. It shows your interest in the topic, which is understandably high, but we will not always be able to react instantaneously. In the past couple of days we've been preparing a comprehensive FAQ regarding Game Testing Weekends as a whole, along with some details about the weekend that just happened. We'll post that tomorrow - in all languages, as we know the subject is of interest to everyone. "
It is very cold and distasteful. I agree it is a hard pill to swallow BUT 2 weeks ago the current build was good enough to make a gaming convention hype and drive up over 50k more pre-order sales and then come back with this cold response.
There should always be a new build coming down the pipe in beta. I am a developer and once we release a build to internal testing we are already starting the next build.
This type of service leads me to believe the game has a chasm between the developers and the marketing and management office. Marketing and management seem to believe the game is about ready to launch and the Developers act like they have another year of testing...
ATM I would not be surprised to see this game release in late December if only to try and save face. Watch it will be a limited release December 31 to 5k pre-orders... Hey we said Holiday 2011 release!
Umm....... i never said i hate the game, sure i troll sometimes here and there but i just linked you official word. If they are releasing a new build, then they will have to start the testing process all over again to weed out bugs. And if they game is not satisfactory it will get another new buiild. I just don't see this game coming out this year.

I couldn't care less about this game one way or the other. It's not my cup of tea, but I don't wish death on it or any such thing.
However, you realize this is just standard practice, right? This is the entire purpose of beta testing. It isn't so people can try out the 'final version' of a game before it's released. It is so that bugs and glaring issues can be fixed, and new builds of a game will be released consistently if a company is actually doing their work right. They're not redesigning the game here; they're fixing problems and doing what they SHOULD be doing.
If you have any history beta testing games, you would realize that this is nothing in the grand scheme of things. It's just work as usual.
Each build of a game will have less and less bugs, until they are satisfied that the remainder can be worked out by the live team. It's not so much 'starting a process over' as it is 'continuing a process they've been doing since beginning internal testing'.
Fans should be pleased that a company decides to do further testing, as it will result in that much more 'complete' of a product when it is eventually released. It's unfortunate the current state of gaming is "NOW NOW NOW GIMME GIMME"
I don't know about the development end but i'm familar with the testing end and sometimes things can happen that just make you have to redo the build completely, i've had this happen on a number of occasions where they thought the build was ready to go they didn't have a new one ready or anything then we found a major game crashing bug and they had to recall the team..It happened often enough to be a norm..things like this happen
As for cold and distastefull? i think thats matter of perspective, hes just saying we are trying to get people in, we had an issue with the current build once the new one is ready to go for the public we'll start inviting again. This is probably the best way you could go about it. Be forth coming be truthful and be blunt. We know they had a problem with the old build, they are making a new one, once internal testing and normal testing are finished they will start up the weekend betas. This is actually a heck of a lot better then I get from most companies that just say oh don't worry we will fix everything and have it out to you this next weekend..then have to dely, here they are just saying, we will try and get it out to you as soon as possible but as we need to do testing again we can't make any guarentees.
To me it's post from the devs like this that actually make me more interested in the game because the devs are willing to come forth and tell us straight out whats going on. no smoke, no mirrors just the plain thruth.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
This is normal in beta cycles where beta is actual testing rather than "free trial". The next beta will test the new code, the new code isn't finished.
I'm more impressed in a dev that's actually catching and fixing bugs, than one who holds beta as a publicity stunt to hype box sales. To me it implies they are prioritizing polish rather than ignoring issues. I can't see that as anything other than positive.
If you want negative and hateful posts try reading the official swtor.com announcement thread for this news.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
They have released a new release of the build rather often. Believe I saw a developer state it was on average every 3 weeks. So not sure how a new build being released has you having it delayed 6 months from now. However I can see that it would delay beta weekends by a single week and have no effect what soever on the release date of the game.
Hey guys, I heard like the sky was falling and stuff!!! OMG!!!
