[Poll] Space Marine or Dead Island?

TheLizardbonesTheLizardbones Member CommonPosts: 10,910

I'm torn between two games. Space Marine and Dead Island. Both get good reviews. Which would you choose? Feel free to explain why.

Things to consider:
* Game is on the PC and will be purchased through Steam.
* I have a controller, so the control scheme working better with a controller is not an issue.
* Both games will run fine on my rig.
* I don't know if any of my friends will play either game.
* Will one of them get discounted next month on Steam?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Of the two, I've only played Space Marine, and I think it's awesome. It captures the brutal world of Warhammer 40k quite well, looks great and the game play is fun for what it is, even if it is a bit simple. The multiplayer is also pretty fun; I'm not much of an fps player, but I've enjoyed it so far, and it gives some decent perks as you progress. My only gripe with it is that the campaign is a bit short.

I do plan on trying Dead Island, it looks cool, so in my opinion you can't go wrong either way- but I can say from experience that Space Marine is well worth the buy.

If you're looking for another game, and haven't already tried Borderlands ( I know it's old), you can get the game of the year edition on steam with all of the DLC for $30. I've had it since it was released and still play it quite often, the game is great.

I am playing both right now and they are VERY different games. It really depends on what you are after.

Space marine- Excellent Story, lots of action and cool weapons but linier. It is on rails. I am guessing I am at least half way through the game and have enjoyed it a great deal for what it is.

Dead Island- Sand box style game. Open world play with RPG style quests and good Co-op if you want to play with others. Feels like Fary Cry meets L4D and Dead Rising. When I finally built my first cool weapon using a bat, a circular saw blade, belt ,wire, and batteries, the game went from fun to awesome fun for me.  The characters you have to play are all very unique to each other as well.

If I am half way or more through Space Marine then I think Dead Island will last you a LOT longer due to the exploration and sandbox style gameplay.

Lastly, I loved Borderlands and will still play it from time to time.

    Both are fun though.

I went for Dead Island, infact been playing it since release in the US, jsut tricked steam into thinking i was in the US to get it unlocked... Sure its buggy but it is good fun..

I will also pick up Space MArine as I enjoyed the demo I just think it will be a bit shallow ..

My daugther and I picked up Dead  Island day 1 and have not regretted it. And even though I have a friend that is heavily into Warhammer that I wanted to play Space Marines for (so I could give him a mini review), killing zombies with customizable weapons in a semi rpg fps was a hands down winner for us.

Ive seen specs recconmended for Dead Island, its so low that it becomes even rediculous and it have steam so i won't even bother as PC gamer buying such games, i play only real PC games(DX10/11) and without any restrictions no STEAM/EA/UBISOFT or DRM i won't buy it no way.

Thats result of buying games legally for past 12 years i can't almost not buy any games anymore or its cheap console port 80% these days or you need steam or perma internet bah:(

Well, you have a sense of humor, so you're probably ok. At least for PvE stuff.

How would you say the RPG stuff in Dead Island is? I couldn't stand the RPG elements of Fallout 3...it was just too much for a single player game. It just seemed pointless. That doesn't mean I don't like character development, but I don't want to get bogged down with picking skills and from a humongous list of stats.

    ** edit **
In Fallout it was the heavy stat picking and point allocation that was so annoying. The sandbox world was pretty cool if I could have mostly just run around out there. The quest system was kind of annoying too, but I think I could have skipped a lot of that.

while i have not played DI and only did the demo of SM. if you want pure MP DM id get marine only because the fluff of the game is generally really engaging and the demo was extremly impressive.

DI looks really good though though afew "lets play" on youtube show it to have alot of really odd bugs/glitches like zombies getting knocked and stuck in walls so you can kick them to death and some other bugs that im sure will become annoying as you progress.

but if its like just cause 2 with the open world it should have alot longer playablity/replay then space marine, which is really built upon a set story line and mutliplayer as its a pure fps.

frankly if you like both i would buy 1 to start and then buy the other after, or if you have the means pretend its xmas and your birthday and buy both... no point waisting time if you actually want both..

Spacemarines for me! Enjoying the game quiet a bit, even though it is on rails all the action and story going on while your playing keeps you focused pretty much I feel. Also the multiplayer is fun and the customization of your own Space/Chaosmarine, your loadouts and leveling and unlocking things is fun. May pick up Dead Island later on, it does look interesting.

They both look like fun games and I plan to play them both once my wife  get me a PS3 for my birthday. OP...I didnt see an option to play both on your poll!

DLC could also be a consideration(that's up to you).  If dow2 is anything to go by Space Marine is likely to have a lot to buy.  So I'm waiting until they release the gold/ultimate edition with dlc included.

Well, the RPG elements are not heavy. You have a skill tree with three diferent "trees" and a good amount of skills. These are different depending on which of the characters you play. There are no real stats to maintain other than the skills. What you will have is a veritable BUTTLOAD of random stuff in inventory to craft unique weapons with. Some are pretty crazy like the Deobomb (won't ruin that for you). At first I thought a lot of it was for pawning off at vendors but all of the items have a purpose. loot everything, luggage, trashcans, crates, etc. You will need the stuff. Weapons break pretty quickly.

You won't get bogged down with the skills. You get 1 point to spend when you level and that is it.

I will likely play both, but one of them will have to be first. I'm not good with playing multiple games at the same time...I always just play one anyway. Plus, the wife has agreed to buy me a game and I'm more leery of wasting her money than I am my own.

They both sound really good though. Hence the poll.

Thanks for the replies folks. I have a much better idea of both games and it'll be an easier decision to make. I'm leaning towards DI for the open world Left4Dead2 vibe...but simple, straight up slaughter may win out. :-)

I haven't played DI yet, but I picked up Space Marine for PC on day one and I am enjoying it so much that I also purchased it for my PS3 a few days later.

Best of both worlds, my buddies are mostly console guys, so they can get there fix while we're having a beer after work, etc... and I can have my PC fun during my free time.

I haven't played a game in over five years that was so good that I considered purchasing it for both platforms. It really is awesome and Relic has done an absolutely spectacular job capturing the 40k atmosphere and feel.

PS: Space Marines multiplayer is extremely intense.

I chose space marine because its beast, but on a side note rage comes out next month and im definetely getting it first day, looks like a mix of borderlands and fallout and bethesda has a slight hand in help make it so looks like it should be a pretty good game.

  • lathaanlathaan Member UncommonPosts: 476

both are really good, DI is awesome tho, while warhammer got old fast for me.

  • jpnzjpnz Member Posts: 3,529

    Get both.

No reason why you shouldn't as they are both excellent games.

I love Space Marine.  The gameplay is fairly basic, but I'm such a huge 40k fanboy that I loved every minute of it.  It is also however short, took me about 16 hours of gameplay to beat (and I'm a slow player).   As far as the multi-player goes, you very much have a leveling up type feature similiar to current CoD games complete with weapon challenges to unlock perks and things.

P.S.  Smashing the enemies of man from above with the jetpack is great fun.

Not so much after the patch fixing the mistake of releasing the dev client as retail. Out of the two i still prefer Spacemarines after having the chance to play both for  a bit. Dead island has a great sand box environment to it but i found it too slow paced game and mob wise making it somewhat boring, it doesn't challenge you in the slightest.

  • DeathspankDeathspank Member UncommonPosts: 139

Spacemarine for me. Its kinda funny, i only picked up the game for its singleplayer and felt a bit let down by its short length and ending which no doubt points to a sequel (which is good).

The multiplyer though is absolutely awesome. The fact that you can copy the load out of the person who killed you makes the barrier to entry quite easy for someone just starting out, and with relic and master crafted armour waiting to be unlocked i know im gonna spend many hours getting to max level.
