Hey y'all, asking for some help here. I have been trying to find out if there is any recent information on whether or not we will be allowed to have a first AND last name (surname) for our characters or only a first name. I have seen a couple people claiming that at SDCC it was stated that no last names would be allowed, but then others said it was one of those "can't talk about it now" type things. Does anyone out there remember what was said? A link would be greatly appreciated. I am looking now myself but having no luck.

I'm fairly positive you only get the one name.

I am as well, but I like links. Hard to argue with good solid sources.

I was hoping they'd allow spaces in the name field.
if you´re not allowed a surname, it could be due to the fact you can unlock titles such a Darth and Lord, which in effect, gives you a surname, sort of
f.eks Malant Valhal, i like, but Darth Malant Valhal would sound stupid, Darth Malant on the other hand, sounds awesome,

As far as I'm aware there has been no offical stance, but people in beta have been reporting that there are only first names... so as magic eight ball would say "all signs point to, no".
From all the game play vids I have seen, and from friends in beta testing, you only get one name. I dunno if that is simply a display name and maybe on some sort of Bio sheet you can add a surname or what have you, but that's all the info I have on the subject. I am also curious, and I'll have to do some asking after this post, if you can at the very least add apostrophes as many of the names in SW have some sort of punctuation in them.
I hope you can have two AND unlock titles so I can be Darth Darth Binks.

I hope whatever the policy, that they prevent any players from using the title Darth. Darth is a claim of supremecy over all Sith and a challenge to other Sith. It wouldn't be lore appropriate for everyone to be running about with a title that only one person should hold. It might be interesting to have a mechanic that allows a handful of characters to claim the title at any given time, but cause the title to make you open to attacks from other Sith players.
There were multiple Darths in the movies and this is before the rule of 2.

Like Nazgol said, this is a different time line, and there are plenty of Darths running around now. Reading Decieved alone points out 4 or 5 of them during the course of the book.
Also there was an interview where they said you could get the Darth title for Sith, and I am assuming the Master title for Jedi.

I think I remember them saying you can earth the Darth title through a quest or something and that not everyone would get it. So yeah, you get titles. There are many I've seen.

Ive heard only 1 name only, but maybe they will update to 1st and last name. We'll have to wait and see.

i think they had people like you in mind when they decided for the one name approach.
i cant find it but last i had heard they took the stance of not talking about it right now because it may tie into another sytem. im guessing that it would be legacy system but no idea. but i am almost positive they have not said it won't be in, just that they aren't talking about right now.
Only one class can currently earn the Darth title from what I have heard, and its not the Sith Warrior.
You can use - and ' currently, but I havn't seen an image with a full sur name yet!
The new Developer Blog and gaou's post above give me hope, but I still can not find any source to link to. Here's to hoping and praying that we can have an Official surname while only displaying the first name.

It would be awesome if you were granted a surname or something with the Legacy system.
Damn, of everything about TOR, the Legacy system is the one I want to know about the very most.

The names can be anything unless it:
Resembles a Star Wars Character and maybe places (so Sith, Jedi, Darth, Vader, Anakin, names like those are restricted)
Contains innapropriate words (Maybe the German Furor of WW2 won't be allowed either)
Contains a number
It can also contain hyphens ------ and apostrophes ' ' ' ' ' ' ' '

Hey Folks,
Darth and Lord are ranks in the Old Republic time period and while they represent an increasingly smaller percentage of overall Sith, they are clearly not at as rare as only having one or two running around in the galaxy. There are already numerous Darths (Baras, Malgus) we've seen who are not on the Dark Council.
It will likely not come as a surprise to most people that the titles of Darth and Lord are story-based rewards (one does not become a Darth by grinding frog-dogs) as are Master, etc. What may come as a surprise is that not everyone who completes a Sith or Jedi story will achieve them. There are always choices and those choices matter in many ways, including your notoriety and the rewards or reputation you earn. Darth will absolutely be off-limits when creating names.

Sure thing. It doesn't say anything specific about names, but it does reference how names are important for linking things together and even mentions a few "characters" in the game (one is Satele Shan) by their full names and shows how others are linked to them. Here it is:

I know I am reaching a little, all I am saying though is things like this make me feel hopeful for a more indepth naming system in this game.
