I downloaded the free trial and initially thought that Rift would be an enjoyable game. However, I started running into huge problems such as being disconnected from the server even though the population was listed as light; I would attempt to talk to NPC's and the chat box would open up 5 minutes later; mobs that were never there would end up killing me 3 or 4 minutes after I was already in camp.
I've never had these problems with other MMO's so I figured I would come onto the forums and find out if these problems are constant ( and hence, ending my time with Rift) or if this is something that is rare.

I've not had many problems, apart from when the servers were full and had queues. Stability did seem to suffer then. A few people do seem to have random connection issues though, but it seems to come and go in little waves.

Nope, been playing for quite a while.
This is not the typical experience with RIFT, I assure you. Disco's are very infrequent normally.
The question is, are you at a university using the Internet on campus, this i a problem at places like University of Miami, and other universities. While I don't play in rift we do have some mates who do. This one guy lives in a dorm and what happens is they throttle him back when he reaches a certain amount of ip traffic a day, and that gets him disconnected.
Never had any server problems, on EU shard.
Never had any issues on NA or EU, have characters on both, servers are usually very good, id go as far to say some of the best ive experienced.
never had a problem. do some diagnostics on your connection.

I often play while downloading in the background and don't suffer any of these issues. I would check that your ports are properly forwarded and that you've made a firewall exception.
Where are you connecting from?
Are you using wireless or are you plugged in?
What hardware are you using?
Ran defrag recently?
Are other people also using the connection?
I think that you'll find that the problem is on your side which probably isn't what you want to hear. Try defragging, plugging in if you're currently going wireless, create a firewall exception. If those things don't work you can come back here and give us the above info, or contact Trion to see if they have any ideas.
I would say don't give up. You may be frustrated now, but once these problems are solved I think you'll really like the game.
edit:
You could also try-
Power cycling your router
Restarting your comp if you don't do that very often
Checking Steam and other programs to see if they are updating things in the backgroudn
