I just came across this quick review of dead island titled games greatest let downs

We were all fooled by that brilliant CGI trailer weren't we. The slow-motion reversed teaser depicted a family being ravaged by zombies, and conveyed more emotion than we've ever seen in a zombie game. The final game, sadly, ended up being a clumsy, bug-ridden action RPG that could rise above its numerous flaws.

Could be why there's no pc demo for it yet

Nah, I think most us realized that the trailer would give no indication of how the game would play.  We pretty much took it as an impressive standalone piece of art.  I can hardly be shocked that a game based on a zombie shooter premise turned out to be exactly that -- a zombie shooter.

I won't give the game the time of day, but the trailer is still remarkable.

I'll check out Space Marine when it's half off.

I haven't encountered any bugs so far in Dead Island, playing v1.2. But then, i found the pc game needed a ton of tweaking before it was playable for me

    -menu mouse speed

    -FOV adjustment for 1920x1080

    -motion blur off

    -vsync on

    -bloom off

    -increasing shadow resolution

    -enable FSAA

While the mouse speed in the menu was just annyoing, the graphical tweaks were need because i started to feel sick after playing a while.

*Edit: For those who don't own the game yet, note that above settings aren't accessible in the ingame options. You have to dig quite deep in the packages and do some manual editing of all kind of files. No shure if this could get you banned by VAC. So keep this in mind in case you are about to buy the game and want or need to tweak it as well.

I've tried both, and I gotta say, so far I like Space Marine more. I really thought it would be the opposite. But who knows, Dead Island might get better further in so I'll keep on playing.

Space marine is about 10 hours of content, Dead Island I'm pushing 20 hours and I'm only 15% through, although I do explore a lot and do all the side missions.

advice with dead island though, around 15% mark they send you to a hotel to get a 18 wheeler... when the mission says Very Hard... it's for real.

For co-op, Dead Island by far. Other than some bugs, it has been the most fun I've had with friends in awhile. But if you want good single player with a decent story, I'd go with space marine.

Nothing excites me about either enough to not wait a year or so and pick them up cheap on Steam. Plenty to play and do in the meantime.

Dead Island can be very buggy though...

I got stuck in these bathroom stalls because I couldnt walk up the stairs....I'd make it near the top step and it would shoot me back down.I was getting annoyed,I thought I would have to start the game over and just avoid bathrooms altogether.I finally got out though after 5 minutes of trying.

And so far its pretty damn easy,The zombies just kinda lumber at you waiting for you to beat their face in.Yeah, lumbering is trademark zombie, but atleast have more of them to make it somewhat dangerous..hopefully it gets more challenging as time goes on.

Yeah, they had no business releasing a trailer like that for this game. What we got was basically a mix of Borderlands and Left 4 Dead, with a LOT of bugs thrown in. Granted the game still looks okay, but definitely not what was expected. I'll be waiting for it to hit the $20-$30 range, myself.

I'm enjoying Space Marine a lot right now though. Just finished the campaign at about 10 hours, but will be playing through again to find the collectibles I missed, as well as for achievements. The multiplayer, while not perfect, is definitely fun enough to keep me distracted for a while.

In short, Space Marine gets my vote, especially if you're a fan of WH40K.

No lie there. That was a hard one. Pretty fun though.

I'm Looking to play one of these games after is finish Mas Effect 2 this week, Torn between the two.

another tip: for melee go baseball bats and machetes as their range keeps you from dying so much. Upgraded green and white (item color: Common/Uncommon RPG system) are better than epic/legendary drops as to repair and upgrade epics and legendaries will make you go broke.

First i was excited about the announcement of a roleplaying game with zombies, I did rent it  and uninstalled it after I reached lvl 10.

The game is flat and boring after a while, there is no real interesting story...I mean you wake up somewhere on an Island and you are immune to zombies but there is no info about that at all, the quests are alright but not really exciting.

I was playing up to lvl 10 and still was hanging around in the chapter 2 map, there are not many maps and the map is small. You kill those zombies but probably the same just spawn again or wake up from the ground. The loot is similar and fills up or spawns new after a while at the same positions.

I did play with sharp knifes, the game is quiete brutal you can cut off heads, arms and so on ...unfortunately the game is more a boring  hack n slash  with minor roleplaying and a missing cool story...

yeah it does get old after a bit...

I think some of the reviews are giving it way too much credit..bugs and all I give it a 5 out of 10.

Well, I did miss fear in this game...I had none, wasnt excited except at the beginning since I thought a cool story will happen. The harder ones can kill you with 2 hits and just have loads of health points, so you either hit n run or die and come back since the super zombie is still hurt from your first attacks...yeah I would say aswell 5/10 but not for bugs rather for the game content, but probably those who did enjoy left4dead will like it. Wonder why some reviews give this game 89%, what a joke. It looks like an open world but is not a real world, due to the zombie and loot respawn alone.

Btw the coop system has it flaws aswell, I was lvl 4 and players with lvl 15 did join my game for some minutes. This produces balance issues and makes it too easy.

Another thing is that if you join another server, only your lvl and gear is saved but not the quest advancement..so there is a chance you have to do the same quests again and the game advancement is only saved on the "server" you did join. Its more suitable for close friends to play coop instead with public players, but most will probably try to play on public games anyway..... this is a major issue with the coop system in this game.

Having played through Dead Island and half-way through Space Marine, I would say space marine. Especially if you like warhammer 40k, it's every fans wet dream seriously.

Dead Island on the other hand was great fun until it got repetetive, not to mention all the bugs and other shit it has to offer. It's a mess to say the least. It might be worth picking up in one or two months, but why would you when you'll have alternatives like Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Dark Souls and Uncharted 3 in the case that you own a console that is.

Space Marine seems like a much more professional polished product to me.  Might not be a classic or anything, but I'm having fun with it, despite its linearity, while waiting for some of the bigger upcoming titles.

Dead Island could have been much better, but the gameplay is crippled by weak graphics, terrible animations, and a skill system that could have added a fun dimension to it, if there were fun skills to unlock.  +10% damage, and the like, though?  Not so much.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I have finally 'got' Deux Ex. It took a bit to get the hang of not trying to kill a room full of people. However, sneaking around and hacking things it getting to be a lot of fun.

I'm still on the fence...I was leaning towards DI, but a simpler blow 'em up might be the thing to do after DE. AAARGH! My d-bag brain won't play more than one game at a time unless one of the is totally mindless.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Dead Island, I bought this for 50$ and I beat it in 24 hours.... I think it was worth 30$.... The story was ok, combat is very fun, but the item system is very basic. Theres a ton of mods, but they are very similar. If you like zombie games mixed with semi-realistic combat, with a little RPG elements, you would like dead island. In one month, they are adding some kind of bloodbath arena... I think that feature will make the game worth that extra 20$.... but for now, I woulda saved my money.

Final verdict.... neither, unless you are really bored.

These comments leave me almost speachless...

    1)  If you play 24 hours non-stop you could probably beat this as long as you skip a majority of sub quests and unlocks.

    2)  If you think 50 dollars for 24+ hours of entertainment isn't a good deal you're living in a f*cked up reality.  People pay 10 dollars for a 90 minute movie.  I honestly cannot think of a single entertainment activity that provides anything close for only 50 bucks.

The only issues I see with Dead Island are the bugs...  But i've managed to continue playing just fine still.

I'm loving Dead Island, it really captures the feel of the zombie movies of the 70s and 80s. The WH 40k universe doesn't really capture my imagination (well not since around 1988) in the same way so I've not bothered with it.

  • gelato_icegelato_ice Member Posts: 6

I'm on the other-side to 'Hashrat', I stopped playing Dead Island half way through and then returned it. It wasn't particularly bad really but it was just another zombie killing game I couldn't be bothered to sit through.

Instead I found Space Marine to be far more to my taste, the Campaign was actually enjoyable and the fiction was fairly well reminiscent of what you would come to expect of 40k. The multiplayer is were replay value lies with a rank and customization system it should keep me entertained till Gears on the 20th.

personally i'd recommend Left4Dead1&2 both are huge in multiplayer, and theres plenty of content... even in single player mode it does surprisingly well..  image

I have Space Marine and its a lot of fun.  Haven't played DI yet but I've heard good things about it.  Another option might be Deus Ex: Human Revolution.  IMO, its btter than the other two games.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

This tbh, the best order would be Deus Ex>Space Marine>Dead Island. Although personally it would be Deus Ex>Space Marine>Anything else x10>Dead Island because I loath zombies.
