Runescape: Floating Castles and Battleground Editors

During a recent visit to Jagex Studios in England, MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle got the low down on the latest and most ambitious update to Runescape to date. In the update, floating castles and a battleground editor were introduced to the game. Adam spent some time talking with the team about the new features and we've got your exclusive report. Read on!

It has been a busy year for Jagex: RuneScape has continued its decade-long march of updates and graphical enhancements, but the Cambridge-based developer has also re-implemented Free Trade, the Wilderness, and now added Clan Citadels. This most recent expansion to the, already expansive, MMO allows clans (guilds) to create their own customizable headquarters; complete with meeting rooms, senate, and even dance floor. To add a further layer of intrigue, these citadels can be customized to fit the tastes of the owner, and also upgraded by taking part in communal tasks such as resource collecting.

Good stuff. This seems to be a fairly significant step-change in MMO design philosophy.  It doesn't just need to be the AAA titles that innovate!

This game could be considered AAA. It's extremely popular and has been around for over a decade.

But in terms of development budget, studio, marketing, etc.  It's not in the same league as say, RIFT.  I don't mean this in a disparaging way.  I played the game for a few years, and I'm glad that it's still doing well.

The more successful and innovative MMOs there are, the more money will be invested into the genre.

It's a shame that graphics are all what most of the developers care about anymore.

And in most cases a better game all around.

I have. For a free game it's actually pretty dang good.
