While there is some sillyness to the war of guilds and stars I tottaly agree with comparing them and the compettion between them. True each game is going in different directions but both are doing some of the things the same and that's why each is argued against the other

I have already pre-ordered SWTOR, I will pre-order GW2 when it is available and I'll prob pick up TSW as well. The cost isn't prohibitive and who knows which one I'll like the best so I'll give them all a try and have fun in the process!

Instanced PvP. Linear Progression. Hold-my-hand mentality.
They both lose, IMO.
Ugh. I yearn for MMO-depth.
GW2's world pvp may not be open world because it's separate from the PVE world entirely. Instancing implies that each group or certain number of people have their own version. This isn't the case in GW2. World PVP will take place on enormous four zone maps in fights that last two weeks and have no player limit.
There will also be battlegrounds. These are indeed instanced, but you can't discount GW2 as having only Instanced PVP due to the world PVP.
GW2 has level progression through different zones, but it's not a linear railroad themepark. Dynamic events only scale up to 10 people or so because there isn't a set path through the zone. They've found in testing that people go off in different directions almost immediately. In addition, because of the repeatable nature of DEs and the fact that the game scales you down in power when doing lower level ones, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Keep exploring a zone if you want, even after you've "outleveled" it, or even go do other races' newbie zones for a complete change of pace.
As far as hand holding mentality, not entirely sure what you mean but I don't see it. There aren't quests so you don't have a quest log which might as well be a GPS to tell you exactly where to go on the map. You have a limited skillbar, forcing you to make decisions about what to bring. Mobs can hurt you, requiring you to dodge and take care of your own life instead of just relying on a healer. Dungeons are very difficult (3 hour wipefest on the lvl 35 of 80 dungeon according to journalists). They can be completed with any combination of classes, but that means you're going to have to work together and develop tactics, not just rely on 1 tank, 1 healer and 3 dps.

From what I've seen on these boards, a lot of people really just want to complain or argue for it's own sake- doesn't matter in the slightest what the game or topic covers.
im getting both. so i dont know lolz. but i have way to high expectations on GW2. and ill play Swtor untill G2 is released and if Swtor is much better then i think then i will probably continue aswell ^^ but im a Huge Fan of GW2s progress so far. im really amazed by everything.. its a game that is way to good to be true and the best part is that its b2p so its going to have a very huge player base ofc. but i dont know besides both of them i think wow will still have the dominating number of "player base" that they have. everything they release a shitty expansion people join again (im 1 of them) haha so we'll have to wait and see. im very excited and im looking forward to both of those games ^^
I think we can all acknowledge that there's no logical reason for the Star Wars and Guild Wars people to fight so much.
Which suggests it's a conspiracy.
... which brings us back to The Secret World.
... yes. All this opinionated flamebaiting and attempts to denigrate one game at the expense of the other is all just a long running plan on the part of The Secret World fans.
It really makes sense when you look at it that way.

It was all started by the Dragons....
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I don't understand the vitriol between the two "sides" either. I love Star Wars and I love Guild Wars (I'm one of those people who, until recently, claimed Guild Wars as my only MMO game). The ONLY reason I won't be playing Star Wars is because of the subscription. If it were B2P like GW2, I definitely would make room for 3 MMOs (I am currently addicted to LotRO and still working on achievements in GW1).
I personally think subs are a waste of money so I don't partake of games that have them as much as I'd like to. So, I will miss out on SW:TOR. But, I bet those who are willing to pay the sub for it will no doubt have as much fun as I will have playing GW2.
There's more than enough room for both, people!
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???
There’s a tendency we have to pick our “one game”, even if that oneness doesn’t last very long and shun all others as if the survival of our game depended on it. I just don’t get that these days. In an industry where divergent revenue streams are happening with every new release and the pool of players expands at a steady rate, I’m not sure we need to have the whole “My game must feed on the soul of your game to survive” mentality.
There is no 'one game'.
I think though out of these two releases, I'll only be getting one and that's GW2. I was hot on ToR last year or so, but I don't like the features they've released in the press so it seems unlikely I will get it. GW2 offers things I like, especially for what one can do at max level, and it's a good economic model for my time constraints.
Do I think ToR will be an excellent game? I hope it's better than DA2 was for its fans and I hope that what is released justifies its massive development budget. Do I think GW2 will be an excellent game? I hope so and seeing that GW1 is a quality game, it's likely it will be. I hope that fans of both games can have a good play experience and I personally don't care who plays what. To each their own.
Perhaps people are pitting the two games against each other on forums because they're bored and want attention?
It's a lot like politics, both sides think they are right and think the other end is simply idiots unable to see the truth. Even the people who try and sound unbiased (like myself in this post) are just trying to hide it, and sometimes we even do a good job (unlike myself). So honestly I just say go ahead and fight, if I don't want to read it I won't, if the admins don't want it then they'll delete it. It incovineces me none. All of the three sides (GW2, TOR, and "Why can't we stop fighting guys?") seem to mostly just want to feel smugly superior to the others.
P.S. Yes someone could argue I'm doing that myself, to which I say... no comment.
Umm...the answer to why is pretty simple. The largest percentage of players today are adults. We have jobs, wives, and kids, and TIME is the resource we lack. I MIGHT have time to invest in a single MMO, sometimes. I cannot even remotely divide my time between two or more. I've seen the charts, the majority are in the same boat I am. That means what ever WE buy is likely to decide the continued success of that game, and company, on a fundamental level.
So, no, the pricing model doesn't change anything really in terms of why they should or should not be matched up. Time is. Perhaps if one could be played on an incredible uber-casual level and the other not...I'd see a little better. But two full-fledged MMO's, (as we seem to agree they both will be), are not such an affair. They will be games, both, which involve a minimum of an hour gameplay to even touch the surface in a play session. That hour is probably all I got. Sorry, can't swing em both. Maybe they should make an angry birds MMO.

Completely agree with your point and wanted to add a bit to it, if you don't mind. Adult and real life obligations aside, we have to take into consideration the social aspects of these games. Most MMO players play with a guild or a dedicated group of friends. As such, you would want to progress through the game with your friends since you don't want to be left out. Thus, you must make a choice.
The pricing of the game and whether or not it has a subscription fee doesn't really matter. Those of us who plan on purchasing both games (I know I am) will eventually have to make a choice about which game will be the dominant one and our social groups will have a lot to do with it. Don't get me wrong, the two games can, and probably will co-exist, but besides the time issues that Gishgeron brought up, the social aspects of these games will also contribute to the dominance of one over the other for each individual player.
One thing that I want to point out is that if GW2 will manage to pull off a full fledged AAA MMO without a subscription fee with an uninvasive cash shop (like the original Guild Wars) it will definitely shake up this industry and a lot of developers and publishers will have to rethink their pricing plans. That's why I'm really looking forward to GW2's release. Not because it's a good game but because for the first time in about a decade, we have a game with the potential to change the whole industry.

As a comment to what I've underlined in your post, that's a very interesting thought and I hope you're right. GW1 was already pretty revolutionary, though other companies didn't catch on unfortunately. I guess they could have, but WoW with its numbers and the fact that it released around the same time sort of kept the industry back at its original pricing plan.
I don't like the current vogue of trying to nickle and dime players in cash shops on top of having to pay a sub. I also don't like the immersion-breaking nature of companies trying to get people to buy things. If ANet can pull this off and make a game that people will be buying in quantity (plus expacs), then perhaps it will indeed have a big effect on the industry.
You mention that pricing plans and subscriptions don't matter in general, I think they do, especially in this day and age of economic trouble. If you are struggling to make ends meet, having a high speed internet connection, an account with unlimited downloads, a decent computer with a decent graphics card, box prices + expac prices + subscription fees or other costs is starting to get expensive every month and something that people may opt to cut out... I was shocked to find out that a high speed internet connection with unlimited downloads is over $100/month in the US with cable. Here in Europe it averages around 30 euros/month, which is still not cheap. If I were having financial problems, I'd give up my subscription gaming and get a cheaper internet package for sure.
And then there is the time constraint thing you mention. If you have little time to play, why waste money in a subscription if everything else about the game is equal with 'free' games? I'd go with the option that allows me to play more a la carte.
In my case, I fall more into the category of being constrained by time. That's why GW2 is looking attractive though I do enjoy EQ2 and have been subbed to it for a while now. In the back of my mind though I still think, 'well I am wasting money because I can't play at all during the week'. If GW2 is as good as EQ2, I will definately make it my main game.
We humans just like to pick champions no matter what it is about. 2 soccer fans can beat eachother to death over their teams... It is just some weird genetics we picked up during evolution to pick the best people to lead the hunting.
We MMO fans should really come together in our love of the genre and put the hate where it belongs.... At the FPS gamers.
I'm sure both games will be very sucessful. I'm definitely playing ToR, but i've never played Guild Wars and I might give it a shot after it comes out.

Below are some reasons why:
Story driven gameplay
-both have their own unique way of telling your personal story. While bioware is great at making branching storylines, this is a mmorpg. There likely won't be over a 1000 different possibilities. Same can be said for GW2 though.
PvP
Personally I felt GW had the best PvP around, and this time you can enter PvP content from level 1. No longer do I have to wait til I'm said level for the good stuff. And with world pvp setting you up against servers not the same factions, that's cool.

Combat
Niw this is where I think GW2 takes the cake. And all the presents. SW combat from every video I've seen aside from taking cover is WoW combat. It's turn based while trying not to be. Might as well be atlantica online(which is a good game by the way) you can get mad at me but after playing WoW and many games like it I can def tell it baisc MMO combat. Guild Wars 2 has dynamic combat hiding by ur shield atacually works, you can move while casting or shooting, and literally dodge attacks.
I coukd go on about minor things but I think I've proven my point as to why these 2 games are pitted against each other. Clearly I like GW2 better and I apologize for the bias. I think we'll be lucky to see GW2 released before this time next year. TOR will most likely release before the end of this year.

This^^ Although I guess that means I should half hate myself as I also love FPS games!
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???
Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!
