For various reasons my husband and I left our 7 level 85's behind in Azeroth, and canceled our WoW memberships in August. Reasons are primarily that our real life co-workers, guildies and friends stopped playing, and we find Cata content lackluster.
I have no desire to return to World of Warcraft, but would like to try another MMORPG. WoW was my first gaming experience, and after checking out the forums, I thought I'd ask for opinions as to a few top games to try.
What's important to me is that I can solo, do pve and pvp (in that order). I don't mind paying for the game or sub fee, as long as I have fun. I would prefer to pick an MMORPG that will be around for the next 2 yrs, and although I prefer a mature player base, all ages are fine.
All suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Wish you luck, Unfortunately it seems You have come to MMO purgatory, not many people on this board are happy with the current MMO's and are anticipating new and better things with SWTOR and GW2.
Hope you find something to your liking

There's nothing out currently worth playing. Basically just all of the samethings with different names.
Really depends on why exactly you quit.
If you're not bored of hotkey-based, raid=grind for gear, gear-is-everything MMOs then give RIFT a spin. The soul system is wonderful, and levelling the first character to 50 is almost always a fun experience. They have various free trials so I'd strongly advise you to give the trial a go before paying for it because the game lacks in aesthetic, and the US community in-game is deader than a doornail and some may find that a turn off.
I'm currently playing AoC - give that a try if you're curious. The combat is interesting, and interactive (although many find it too engaging and thus hard), the world oozes character, and the option for soloing is there. If you don't enjoy sex in media though you may find it distasteful (There is a maturity filter however).
I played Aion to 10 and really enjoyed it, but levelling does feel grindy (though I am sure it is no where near as hard as a true Asian MMO) and I have read that it is hard to catch up to a reasonable level.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I need to take this advice more.
I have also quit WoW a while ago. I loved the world, the warcraft lore and I spent most of my time soloing or with a couple of friends trying to find challenges for 1-3 man group.
We've been looking at 2 mmorpg as candidates to be our next "time spounge", Star Wars: The old republic and Guild Wars 2. I'm confident that both will be great games and be here for at least the next 2 years.
Now, we've decided on Guild Wars 2, for many reasons. But I'm sure we will try SWTOR at some point in time.
The 2 games are very different. So depending on what you're interesting in, SWTOR is sci-fi/fantasy and I think the gameplay wise will very likely feel familiar to WoW, but it won't be a "WoW clone" as some put it, I'msure. It will have a vast amount of voice overs and a HUGE storyline.
One of the reasons we chose GW2 was that it felt very new and fresh compared to WoW but still in a fantasy environment with a lot of lore. Honestly, there's too much of the features that we love in GW2 I'd be here all night listing them.
So, 2 mmorpg that I belive will both be awesome. There's a lot of information and gameplay videos of both games out there so go read up and form your own opinion of them. Worth mentioning is that SWTOR will be released sooner than GW2, so if that mmorpg abstinence kicks in, that would be the way to go ;-)
Then again, GW2 is B2P so no montly fees. If you've got plenty of time, why not play both.
Thanks Kirak2009, I have heard both of those recommended, so I def have my eye on them.
JesterMester, I was feeling that same way, but hoping to hear otherwise!
Empyos, great reply, thanks. I’ll check AoC out now.
Robokapp, you’re funny J

To OP, there is a ton you can play. I would recommend Age Of Conan,Everquest 2 and Guild wars. All 3 offer great gaming experiences: AOC is more modern and has a more adult theme to it that makes it interesting. Everquest 2 is old school so if you fancy trying to transport yourself back to those early memories I would give that a try, Guild wars plays more as a single player rpg game, with massive extrremely polished content (and great to prepare for Guild Wwars 2 commming out) All 3 you can play for free effectively, aoc and EQ2 you can allways subscribe if you love it. I also play Eve on the side to keep thing interesting.
In 12-18 months time its Archage/Guild Wars 2/Eve for me Most of my eggs are in the Archage basket
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
Thanks for your reply Grimfern, and your words ring familiar with how we are feeling and why we left. I am leaning towards those two, but I'll pick only one. Playing one game can be time consuming!
Kinda tough finding that one MMO that clicks with you, after breaking up with WoW.
I would watch videos first for a little bit of an impression before downloading the giga clients. All (?) have trials, so you could do that as step 2.
Rift impression.
Age of Conan impression.
Aion impression.
City of Heroes impression.
Lord of the Rings.
Champions Online.
I see you're in the USA. Give Vindictus a glimpse.
It's tough settling on one but they all feel different mechanically so that's where the trials come in. To get a feel for them and if they're right up your street.
I'm waiting for the new batch of games about to be released. I'm done and tired of the current crop Good luck to you and your loved ones.
Hello,
You seem to both like a game with deep lore, interesting storyline and content doable by 2-3 people. I would highly recommend you Guild Wars. Yes, it's not new and yes, it's not an open world mmorpg, yet, the community is great and tons of people still play it and love it. I bought it only a few weeks ago only to get familiar with the story and lore before GW2 is out and am stunned by the quality of the game. It really is a pearl and I am sorry I didn't try it out before.
It is one of the best games out there 2 people could play together, in my opinion, since whenever you don't feel like playing with others you can just fill up your party with npcs and just go duo it all
Once again, I think very deep lore and quite story-oriented content are the strongest points of Guild Wars 1. If this sounds like something you might like, give free trials a try
Good luck in finding your game.
P.S. One other game I could recommend you is LotRO but it's become a pay to win fest and nowdays, sadly, has very little value, compared to others.

I second the EQ2 nod it's got great depth and loads of content, you can easily solo hassel free, great PvE, and PvP i'm not sure of myself since i've never been interested in it for that game but it's there in battlegrounds and a PvP server. Can try the EQ2 Extended for 14 day free trial and see what you think.
I would say pick any MMO with out TAB target or you will forever be thinking...(( MMM this is like WoW)))
Either
Darkfall
Mortal Online
Perp
EvE..
And more
Needs to be a complete change, remember no TAB 123 mmo's!!!
If you're not really turned off by WoW gear grind then I guess Rift could be a nice change until GW2 releases. There are quite a few games out there worth taking a look at. AoC, Lotro and maybe even Aion.
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
I have to say EQ2. I jsut quit WoW in June and went and tried EQ2. Like the above poster, what i liek about EQ2 is the depth of the game. Character development, awesome housing, grouping (tank, healer, dps, support), etc. have more depth to them than WoW did. One thing I really like about the grouping, support classes actually pull alot of weight in this game. You can run the usual tank, healer, dps if you want, but adding a support class increases group capability exponentially.

For games that are currently available... EQ2 and/or Vanguard. If you can hold out a couple months, wait for Guild Wars 2 or Star Wars to release.
