This is the future of MMOs

PC gaming is coming to an end. The FPS genre continues to shrink into a void of what was. Most FPS games that do release for the PC are mere Console ports. One of the only things that give the PC some real sustain are MMORPGs. However, even MMOs are starting to to make it to the console: DC Universe Online. It makes sense for companies, as the market towards the console crowd is much greater.

In the console realm, motion activated gameplay is the next step, e.g., Wii, Kinect, etc.

Here we have a very primitive example of xBox's Kinect working with World of Warcraft: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62wj8eJ0FHw&feature=player_embedded

Imagine the spawn of a real "hardcore" server, where players are actually forced to physically run in place in order to get your character to move. Imagine.

Motion-Sensory MMOs.

As long as the "eating a hot pocket motion" uses primary skill #1 and "drinking a red-bull" motion uses primary skill #2, I see no issues with this.  Altough I'm not a fan of what motion may be required to communicate that you need a bio-break.

PC gaming has been coming to an end since the 80s.  That is according to the console manufacturers.

20+ million MMO gamers must be wrong.

Yeah, I second that 80's thing.  I remember some guy at the arcade that was servicing the games spouting the same junk back then, in the late 80's....

Kinect is DEAD!  I want a monitor that really shoots you with paintballs/rubber bullets (or real bullets, if you are hardcore!), punches you, etc!!!!   Just think how much more you would be into your game....if it could kill you!

The whole "console gaming is bigger" bullshit is really getting old fast. Why don't you give me some sales charts and we'll talk, ah that's right you can't because most of the PC game revenue is through digital distribution and thus sales figures are not open to the public.

PC gaming is on the rise, with games like The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex we once again feel like we are playing PC-games. We've got a wave of promising MMO's on the horizon. We see a tempest building up in the e-sports scene especially with DotA 2 on the rise. Battlefield 3 is going to see a great deal of support for the PC version aswell.

All the while sony and microsoft are bragging over who has got the most mediocre shooter on their console. If something is dead, it's the console exclusives. With no more silent hills, metal gear solids, resident evils, final fantasies etc that are really good there simply ain't a reason to own a console anymore.

Consoles were Japans frontline, and since Japan has sunken into shit the console market is dead to me.

Even if this topic was made in jest, the amount of "prophets" on this website astonish me with their dramatic predictions.

No, I very much doubt there'll be an MMO with motion controls. It would just be too taxing to wave your arms around for hours on end.

I'm imagining it not going over well with the majority of MMO players. For one thing, Motion Capture requires a lot of room, and I "imagine" most people don't play their online games in wide, open rooms. For another, video games are best played sitting down. Remember that Tony Hawk's game that actually involved a Skateboard? I do. It destroyed the franchise.

Steam is a juggernaut and everyone else is enviouis of them.

Pc gaming has been growing for the last few years. You dont know what you're talking about.

There's also streaming OnLive, be interested if the hardware for consoles could be ditched altogether?

It is true that FPS games future on PCs are looking dark, but other genres like strategy games are doing fine.

While it is possible that console games could start to take subs from PCs that hasn't happened yet and as I see it is the only real threat to PCs supremacy on MMOs right now Undead labs.

Undead lab is lead by Jeff Strain (Diablo, Warcraft 3, Wow, Guildwars 1 & 2) and he is really good, he is also the first dev I heard of that are trying to truly use the consoles advantages and not just port a PC game.

I am not worried the least, even though I can understand if FPS fans are. That might change in a few years, but right now PCs are owning the MMOs.

PC gaming is sort of at a serious decline.  But....

The RTS genre never has really worked that well on a console.  Not hard to see why.

MMOs still stick to PC for the most part.

But yes the consoles are on the up.  The killing blow may not be far behind.  If they make a console, that for the most part can emulate PC play?  With a keyboard included with the price of purchase.  I just dont know.

I see this happening at some point.  But not that consoles will take over.  But rather the PC and console will meld.  So perfectly in the distant future that they're pretty much one and the same.  Then you're right back to square one anyways.

So worry not PC gamers.  You're future PC may very well be a console.  Or.....your future console may be more a PC than anything else.  Just wait and watch.  I gauruntee it.    : )

So, do you want me to read any more?  PC gaming will roll with the punches like it always has.

Motion controllers are still too unintuitive and bulky to be used seriously and doesn't seem good enough for long periods of time.  The hardware for them may even be there and usable, but software developers haven't been utilizing it.  I think users on the PC tinkering with Kinect are achieving more interesting results than the developers for it's native platform.

Maybe down the road, yeah, but I don't think we're close enough to where these control methods would be considered viable for 'gaming' -- certainly for some physical activity and small fun, but ultimately still a gimmick.

I will never buy a console, so if game companies would like to sell me games, they better have something for the PC.

I also dont like console ports much. KotOR was a great game (though not technically a console game, as it was a PC/Console parallel project), but its controls are substandard.

  • EkarosEkaros Member UncommonPosts: 367

For PC there will always be the indie games. And PC games aren't realy so bad for publishers, no need to please either MS, Nintendo or Sony, or pay them. As a platform PCs have gone long way and have still momentum left.

Also, you could easily do motion stuff on PC, higher intial cost, but no issues after that.

  • psyclumpsyclum Member Posts: 792

this pretty much explains what my feeling is aboute the pc vs console fight:D

my "peripheral" for ONE genre of games i pay cost more then you entire console :D

I wouldn't be to worried about pc gaming dying as long as companies like blizzard  and valve are still doing well with wow, sc and diablo, half life, team fortress ect >on companies and games, mmos.  tablet gaming could bring some massive changes, perhaps unwanted to hardcore or longtime gamers.   there seems to be a leveling out of hardware where the top end is rarer and rarer and therefore graphics and physics innovation becomes lacking, slightly anyways.  still plenty of new happening.  im  more worrid about dlcs killing mod freedom and more money sucking tactics.  when you cant make your own maps on the next starcraft or some crazy shit like that then there'd be something to worry about.  or if you have to pay 15bucks a month or so to play any game online cuz its an "mmo", that would be a problem for me.   young people wouldnt know the difference for theyd be used to it from gaming birth; kinda like how many dont know who pink floyd or nirvana is.

I really don't think so. I think PC Games are here to stay, PC platform serves people with a bit more maturity than consoles, so it will have it's own space. People tend to evolve from a gaming console to a multitask PC, so while your a kid playing console now you will find yourself working in a PC and playing some games later. Imo even the most hardcore players will leave a console for a PC eventually.

PC gaming will live on, but in what form? They have far fewer titles released than consoles, which are not always better in quality. PC games are better in graphics and in covering certain gaming genres like strategy, but not consistanlty better as games. Also the influence of consoles on PC gaming goes beyond ports.

PC gaming has been influenced by the lower age group of consoles and simplicity of those games. Here game design is not just about the technical issues of porting from a console or making sure a game you design for the PC will play well on a controller. It is about the culture of what makes a popular game; consoles have had a big negative impact here. The latest Civilization was terribly dumbed down, Crysis 2 was extremely linear in comparison to the first one and so on.

PC games have been influenced by juvenile play styles since gaming began in the 70’s. But that influence has increased as the gap in sales widened. Social network gaming is already influencing solo and MMO gaming. Console gamers are already starting to be concerned about the influence of social network gaming on their games. It is happening all over again, software companies find a bigger market and don’t care what ‘gamers’ think.

The other big driver here was the replacement of gaming culture as the driving force behind gaming software companies with business culture. When you replace a companies gaming enthusiast CEO with guys who ran Pepsi or Haagen-Dazs what do you expect to happen?

Software companies want to sell to as many players as possible for the most profit. How long before the story of console gaming is the same as the story of PC gaming? We are in the initial stages now, remember when PC gamers laughed at the graphical quality and simplicity of console games? Well console players look at Facebook games and laugh now, but for how much longer?

Small sudden and repetitive movements are not too healthy, they can cause muscle and articulation strain that can have bad consequences in the long urn. I'm not sure playing WOW using those movements for one hour a day would be too beneficial, unless you use harmonious well thought aerobic movements but then your attention woulnd't be on the game i'm guessing, and you really can't switch from one aerobic movement to another as an MMO would demand, you need to do a series of 10 movements minimum.
