What do you hate about mmorpgs?

nakkinakki Member Posts: 56

Most annoying feature, which is in every other game I test, is:

- exp loss when u die!

that really makes me angry... it does.. also death is not actually death when you only lose exp. Infact I think every game would be better without anykind of death penalty instead of exp loss penalty.

anyway list here what feature or aspects you dont like about mmorpgs.

Play SWG if you don't want a death penalty, only bounty hunters and jedi get a death penalty.

EVE-Online, you die, you lose EVERYTHING you had on you, your ship is destroyed, if you didn't upgrade your clones accordingly you could lose upwards of 5 million skill points which is like 2 months work I think. Hows that for a death penalty? In EVE you're actually scared of death. In SWG you could run into a krayt dragon solo and not care if you die.

I hate when games sacrifice class variety in the name of balance, ala EQ2 and WOW. One of the reasons I love DAOC so much is the huge selection of classes(44) and different style of play each one has. Perhaps it is less balanced than the previously mentioned games but it damn sure is more fun.

    Variety > Balance

    Generic classes and skills

I played alot of mmos and especially Korean mmos.  What I have seen alot and irritates me is seeing the same exact classes and skills in every one of them.  They have low customizability, and there is always that one predominant skill you use over and over again.

Ohh and I also hate hack and slash combat, and limited skill use for melee characters due to skills being intelligence dependant.

The thing I hate the most is that there is never a good steal based system.  You always see a rogue or a thief in a game but never enough skills to show what they are about.  I only see a couple skills that even apply to this class.  Like How can you have a class that is about material possession with only two skills to steal.  There should be like 40.  Then thier skills are all combat intensive.  grrr  They should gain exp by profiting not fighting.  In reality, a good crook doesnt fight, they are silent and are out of there before they have to.

I hate with every MMORPG exept There the only thing you do is kill and skill. You hardly talk and never build. That is one of the most fun things about There, building!

First off i play DAoC and love it.  But what gets me is people who tell others they dont know what they are doing...qq...qq...qq....qqqqqq, just because they dont play the way the QQer thinks they should.

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

in conquer there is a gradual death penalty:

some money and some items from backpack if monster kill u

lots of money and items in backpack and few from wearing items if u pk blue name

more money and backpack items and more wearing items pk red name

and money, backpack, wearing items if black name - pk mode

u loose exp if not from a guild

what i hate?: lag :P and weird control sistems wich dont allow u to play fast enough for the game ur playing

I hate games that lack a significant battle loss penalty.

Losing in battle should sting and piss you off and make you want to avoid it, and a serious exp loss accomplishes that.

Irreversable Choices : I can't stand the idea that any choice i make would result in a set in stone change in my characters progression, something that i can never go back on (other than by making a new character), simply because thats exactly what i do... "ooops didnt mean to do that... cant go back, time to roll a new toon, 2 months work in the bin, thanks games designers". whats even better is the whole "pick a class" aspect of EQ2 some amazing idea that was, the achtypes give no real inclination of what the classes are like to play (other than the conjurer class quest mebies). i really hated that, the amont of characters i deleted and remade to be a slightly differnt class or sub class because its impossible to get a feel for it.

but this leads me nicely on to my next two pet hates...

Levels : The whole idea of levels in my opinion is very dated and long overdue a replacement, plenty of none MMORPGs have done so and enjoyed great success... ala Morrowind, although i'd like it elaborated upon. Who knows Roma Victora may well deliver...

I want a game to feel at least pseudo-realistic, yes its a game but the whole idea of "DING! you leveled up!" breaks immersion better than just about anything else could. its like the game proclaiming that your playing a game.  the more mechanics you hide from players the more they can get into a game is the way i see it.  I'd also like to think that my actions in a game affected my characters progression.

Classes : I'm on a roll with hating the fundamental "basics" here thats for sure.  but again lets go down this pseudo-realistic path, and why we have to choose a "roll" which limits our progress advancement and options for the rest of our playing time.  i'd much rather see a load of skill tree's that may or may not combine and merge to creat semi hybrid rolls/skills, idealy they would combine, but still just a system based on skill trees that are open and accessable to all would be a great start from the "im a warrior" days. i long for the days when YOUR NOT A CLASS!

I may well be a minority here, and fully expect that i am, but they are my biggest pet hates, possibley in the wrong order though, as i think i hate classes more than levels, but i think they go hand in hand really.

    1. Lack of roleplay.
    2. 1337s
    3. The dull and uninspired expectations of the standard MMORPG audience and the McDonaldising of most games. (Everything the same).
    4. Lack of risk-taking and experimentation by MMORPG companies.
    5. Pointless PvP.
    6. The forums for most games which are just full of whiners.
    7. Lack of real death, or penalties for murderers.
    8. MMORPGs that aren't.
    9. The fact that most seem to be stuck on the fantasy bandwagon.
    10. Levels.
    11. Classes.
    12. Outdated pseudo-D&D system engines.

Sounds like quite a few bits of Ryzom would suit you Xanoth.

No levels 'per se', rather there are several seperate skill trees, which subdivide, which you can freely level in. In most closely resembles freely multiclassing in a D&D tabletop game, but the 'classes' are more broad. Forager, Crafter, Warrior, Mage with customisable skill sets and no restrictions on what you can 'level'.

Its a half step towards an ideal no-level game but its a step in the right direction.

    What do I hate about MMORPG'S ......

    1. People that always complain about the game

    2. People that always talk about how Game X is soooooo much better.

    3. Griefers, losers and people that just play to be a pain in the arse to other players.

    What I love about MMORPG's

    1. People that play for fun and try to make it fun for everyone.

    2. People that do not make a arse of themselves

    3. Being able to play a game in a team that consists of player from around the world.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.

Personally I hate when they make claims that they are going to revolutionize the gaming experience.  Talk about a declaration of impending disaster.

Ok, so it isn't exactly about mmoprgs ...just the developers.

For those hardcore gamers and UO crazers a new games in town and in open beta

Irith Online!!....yes the game has copied a lot about UO but seems a ton lot better with a bit more content! You can battle it out at sea in the air and ofcours on the ground. There is an unlimited amount of things to do! You don't even have to fight to enjoy yourself since there is politics, crafting...you can even own a tavern! Death penalties are u loose all if you die and u gotta go and reclaim all your stuff before its all looted (same as UO) so death is really something to avoid! There is no lvling base its all skill based! So don't worry about trying to keep up with a friend, all you gotta do is focus on your skills. Different races with different advantages and disadvantages...ie some races are better at somethings then others which is cool and realistic! I can image a Dwarf being a great with a sword while an Elf great with ranged weapons!

Anyway this to me is the real Ultima Online 2....

    Check it out!

https://www.irthonline.com/betasignup2.aspx - to sign up for the open beta - wait 24hours for reply! One last thing!.....The game is open beta but is not being released any time soon. So don't get upset cause of performance, the devs are on it and MMORPG.com's release date is inaccurate and wrong! They haven't released the game and don't expect them to any time soon, thats y there are still performance problems, but the game is open on Open Beta and available to everyone!

Download from the Homepage of the game or Fileplanet! Hope you enjoy it!

Lack of inovation in new games coming out

Only new game have seen even start tring true new inovative things in Vangaurd

  • Mikey0114Mikey0114 Member Posts: 310
Nop....Vanguard is just meant to be the new and Original EQ2 since it was made by EQ1 key developers. And yes it has some good ideas but so do other MMORPGs, you just haven't found them. Me myself I finally found my game hiding in the dark (Irth Online). Its what I have been waiting for, for a long time, the game follows the steps and similarity of Ultima Online. Actually you could practically call it Ultima Online 2! Anyone interested look back 2 previous posts and you will find a link to the beta sign up page! BTW its still in development so its got quite a few bugs, all the devs are totally focusing on new features at the moment and not bug fixing...but the game isn't officially releasing any time soon so don't worry! MMORPG got the release date wrong! The official release date is: "When it is ready!"

The over abundance of idiotic hormone enraged boys who like to hit on girls avatars. I also hate lag and games that make you lose your items when you die.

Many good points in those few pages!

Personnally I hate to reach a point where there is no more of what I like...I hate even more if the ''follow up'' is something I dislike, this leave an awfull ''unfinished'' taste in the mouth, I just avoid those games completely now...endless grind of what I like is ideal, the end of all grind is an acceptable compromise, throwing me in a side grind I dislike is the worst possible scenario.

Dont ask me to raid or PvP, I wont.  Grouping, solo & maybe tradeskilling are what would be my 3 main focus in conventional RPG.  Ruling a state and a Kingdom, having armies and the like would be a fun aspect I would love to play, as this is my wargamer half.

The guy who say ''permanent choices and decisions'', I dont mind them, as long as I can start back at any fork without losing(just putting on the side) any other progression would be much better IMO then actuals losts we experience.
