War of the Free to Play Games RAWR GRRRR

schrollbachschrollbach Member UncommonPosts: 72

Hello Peoples,

I've been wanting to try out some new MMOs after a long break from WoW (which has been the only MMO I've played seriously).

The only problem is, is that I'm cheap and only want to try the current batch of Free to Play MMOs out there, but I don't have enough time to dedicate a lot of time into various games. What I would like to do is get a quick shortcut/opinions of what you guys think would be the most fitting MMO for someone like me who is looking for:

A "massive" explorable world

Not so much of a quest grind but more of an interactive story/lore

Aside from those 2 stipulations that's honestly all I'm looking for. I wan tto be able to log on and maybe work on one massive quest and explore the world rather than do a bazillion quests that mean nothing. I know WoW was doing a fairly good job with the new expansion on the quests, but I got tired of the same end game non-sense.

Any recommendations as to a game where there is a massivly awesome explorable world with epic quests (rather than a gorillion quests in one puny zone) that is free to play!? Pwease?

I suggest Pirates of the Rings of Conan's Champions and Dragons Everquest Online.

I would try EQ2 and LOTRO..EQ2 gets kinda grindy but LOTRO isn't too bad from what I've seen so far.

Do you want some cheese with that whine? :)

Are they pretty good for just faffing about and exploration or are they heavy themepark games where you can't do anything in the game (including exploration) without being a sufficient level to fight off monsters?

Both EQ2 and LotRO areas/zones are gated by level.

Yea thats the best selling point of f2p is you can try w/o losing anything but some download times.Like someone said I would start with Lord of the Rings Online especially if you want a big central quest line with other quests in between. The only trouble I have with LOTRO is the combat is a bit boring.

    My mashed list was:

    Pirates of the Burning Seas

    LOTRO

    Age of Conan

    Champions Online

    Dungeons & Dragons

    Everquest 2

Also Fallen Earth is going f2p 10/12/11 and City of Heroes/Villains sometime before end of year as well as Star Trek Online

If you want WoW f2p there is Runes of Magic or Allods

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a nice amusement for free, and the restrictions are barely noticable unless you play a lot

Guild Wars is very storyline oriented with hundreds of completely optional sidequests, no grind, and a massive world. The thing with the massive world though is that everything outside of towns are instanced. Also, it's b2p, technically not f2p. If you're fine with that though it sounds like a good match.

    LOTRO is also good.

Every single game everyone has listed has zones gated by level.  I can't think of a F2P that would meet your requirements or I would suggest some.

*I've played them all, but Pirates so that one may be different.

Well then on the b2p note you can pick up FFXIV for 30 bux and play free as well.
