I loved the scenery in VG, been a while, can't remember the cities name, but the one south of the Dark Elf starting area, that has the sultan feel, it has a lot of nice views further back by the palace.
This thread is really making me want to go back to this game. What a gorgeous game . I think I loved Khal best especially when all those beautiful ships were in the dock.
It's weird and I'm looking through my screenies but despite being impressive they still don't truely convey how good it really looks. I think it's because of the 2d 3d thing. The fact that it's alive can't be conveyed in a screenie.

Well, it doesn't catch how the light plays off the mountains or looking up and seeing a storm front coming your way, etc.

Looks like EQ2. Probably why I never got into this. It felt so much like EQ2 and even looked like it, why not just play EQ2 that had a much bigger following!?

Purely on the grounds of this specific thread and its content, at what point in eq2 did you have that draw distance, please post 1 ss with a drawdistance even half of those shown. Btw I'm actually playing eq2 as I type.

I've played both and cannot make the connection. It might have been your graphics settings though and both of the character models do have a plastic look to them. The scenery itself is vastly different, I don't believe EQ2 ground textures measure shadow.
From a gameplay aspect they are even more different and is a better answer to your question. EQ2, like many MMOs, is on rails. Each of it's zones is themed and whether you quest through or kill grind you are taken from x level to x level along the same path.
Vanguard can produce this same linear feature if you keep following the same questline but allows the option of going to another location within the same levels, it's one big world. Instead of a line with many points imagine a satellite system of questlines throughout each of the three continents. Along the way you will see dungeons with group content should you want to group up. With the advent of rift stones it's even easier to get from one starting place to another.
In my newer photos i did up the settings to high quailty but there is still one more setting higher than that didn't want to push the mac book pro since im running parrallels not boot camp which means my vid card/cpu/mem isnt really fully supported. enjoy everyone hope you reconsider giving VG another shot.

Hey Painlezz,
When this game was in development I said the EXACT SAME THING!
Seriously.
Then one of the cm's or dev's came to the boards and said "no, don't worry it doesn't look like EQ2.
And you know what? ONce you get in the game you can see it doesn't.
But yeah, I said the exact same thing from the screens they were showing. The thing is, EQ2 has more of a whimsical feel. When you get into Vanguard you realize that it doesn't have this feel.

I've played pretty much every MMO out there over the last 14 years, but always passed on Vanguard. Well I fired up the trial a couple of days ago and I must say, it's growing on me. As an EQ1 player from 1998-2001, VG feels more like the sequel to Everquest than EQ2 does.
I'm a big screenshot guy, so I'll have to take a few and post them here later.

While we're on the subject of graphics, did the character models ever get restored to their original/release level of detail? I recall them tweaking things a few years ago, but it just wasn't the same. I figure our hardware should have caught up by now.

Today i'll get some nice pics of the Scenery. just recently obtained a new baby griffon so my flight speed has increased a bit from randulph.
This thread has had me download the free trial to give this game another shot. Thanks for the screenshots, they are fantastic.
Playing: EQ2 & VG
EverQuest, 52 Paladin <Miraj>, Venril Sathir
Vanguard, 50 Necromancer <Riot>, Infineum
Thank you for those screens, Vanguard is a beautiful place to adventure!
Only one game equals Vanguard for it's world texturing and even then Vanguard beats it with it's flora and fauna.
Just not worth my time anymore.

OMG!~ Vanguard is nothing at all like EQ2!
I am so good, I backstabbed your face!
I always liked this one.

Dangit!...
I'll be seeing you guys tonight...
Just not worth my time anymore.
This is just Thestra and a small part of Thestra. I'll have more SS of the other continents like Kojan and Oalia. VG is a huge world.
