i dont know a specific number, all i can say is....it has enough. i dont have problems finding groups and the game IS very populated.

Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II

last I played the game it was a ghost town. The population is going down all the time and nobody can deny this.

SOE says 500,000 people have TRIED EQ2 and I wouldn't doubt that but no way do even half that play it now.

  • NihilanthNihilanth Member Posts: 1,357

ACTUALLY, the population is going up. the population on my server alone has skyrocketed over the past couple months, and zones are always packed. (not in an attempt to put them down ->) a lot of people have been coming over from other games like WoW and FFXI and L2. also, with all the changes to the game theyve been making, many people who left the game previously are coming back and enjoying it more.

I'm pretty sure your quote makes anything you say about Eq2 completely useless Swiftflow. Nobody cares what you think about the game. Believe me, you're doing us all a favor by not playing it.

You write that "SOE says 500,000 people have TRIED EQ2". Do ou have a www link to this info?

I know that WoW is close to 2 millions, so 500.000 seems like very few players.

Keep talking and make yourself look like MORE of an idiot then you already are. Lavastorm has a ton of people running around on it. Takes me about 5 minutes to find a group even for specific quest mobs.

Why don't you make yourself useful and go back to guarding that bridge you came out from under?

Right now EQ2 have around 280,000-300,000 subscribers.  You could look at the subscription numbers on other games and eq2 here.  www.mmogchart.com.

good site for information like this.

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

actually, thats a LOT of people compared to MOST MMOs out there. The ONLY MMOs to come even close to 2mil people were WoW, Lineage, and Lineage 2. EQ1, UI, and DOAC combined didn't have that many, and they were all very popular MMOs.

Think it was about 2 months ago SOE said they had 350k active subs.

Was on their main page so should be under news archive or something.

Do not know if it has gone up ur down since then in any case it cant be by much, so 300k+ seems accurate.

And one can not really compare any game to WoW, 2 million subs is an insane number for most of these games.

Its like saying someone who has only one billion dollars is a hobo just because Gates have a hundred.

I am probably going back when the Expansion comes, if nothing else just to see how things are going, I quit pretty soon after I hit 50 due to the fact that I have a hard time motivating play without the XP carrot.

In any case mmogchart is usually pretty correct and probably so here to.

Just for the guy who thinks 2 mil WoW subscribers is like..hm, huge compared to 500k, just about WoW, played it... image quit after free month, now my friend says me that their server being "high" is like ghost town, like 10 noobs doing /dance in xroads and some running around no more, all others near bg entrances..And he wanted free pvp in different zones, pf! Compared to that at least people who play eq2 are like, group and no pvp, lol ... Tho as i remember about 2 months ago i played eq2, and it was pretty empty in towns, yes...people running around, but not much low levels like i was.
  • SaigonshakesSaigonshakes Member Posts: 937

There probably wasn't many people in the town because they were out playing the game. The towns are used primarily just to buy stuff.

MMOGchart isnt very accurate. Its gives a ruff estimate and it isnt updated too often. I wouldnt get my sources from that site.

  • TansTans Member Posts: 240

I find the information on MMOGchart somewhat false aswell; Runescape doesn't have 400k active subcribers.

Why are you reading this? This is crap compared to what's above.

Like many of you I was a hardcore EQ1 player. I mastered 3 toons to their max and had the best online gaming experience doing so. After 6 years I was ready for a change. I had all my faith in what was the upcoming game EQ2. On its release day I was first in line at EB waiting for my copy and couldn't wait to get home to get started.

Making my character was just as exciting. The graphic of the character creation I found very waxy but nice to look at nonetheless. I'm sure my 64 bit AMD, 2 gigs of ram with a 6800 Ultra graphics card helped allot.

Once in game and after having a few minutes to look around in the nooby zone my hopes started to turn into worry. Everyone had the same look, your character does not look the same in game as the creation of it, armor graphics and all. I told myself its because we are all new and this is the starting armor and decided to overlook the character model differences. After reaching level 6 I was ready for the general population.

Once on mainland my worry turned to extreme disappointment. It was lag fest, all the guards looked the same, the land had no color, everything was dull, the water looked like some Photoshop gradient experiment gone bad. I gave it a week before I decided to leave it alone for a few months and let things work themselves out.

Four months later I was back and to my disappointment had gotten worse. There was level 10's to 50's running all over and not one of them had armor on that didn't look like it had sat at the bottom of the salt lake for the past 100 years. I seen all tanks wearing what looked like iron mittens and all looking identical. Although everything tries to appear highly detailed, it is as if SOE went out of their way to make all detail look like crap. I could go on and on but I'm sure you either get my point or have first hand knowledge of what I'm talking about.

I was already $100.00 into this adventure so I figured I'd tough it out and see what happens. Four months later things had gone even more down hill and I closed my account for good and have never been more disappointed in any MMO in all my gaming days.

SOE is a very good company. I have always found their customer support above average. They had made what I and I'm sure many of you consider the best MMO ever made (EQ1). They will always have my respect for that reason. PS was great, SWG was good as well but something went terribly wrong with EQ2.

Its not that the game isn't bad enough now,  they are trying new things such as you pay (Real Money) to quest and other things I found just as retarded/greedy/outrageous. Everything is free at first but they are starting the nickel and dime scan like some company like Amway did their business management training. I would say that is going to be the death of EQ2, but its window of opportunity has come and gone and its death has long been past.

EQ2 has around 30 servers I believe, WoW has over 200, There is a good reason for that. I played WoW until 60 and after getting all my epic gear I retired that game as well. Its to fast and much like a arcade style game but it is the best out there right now. Its well worth the cost.

EQ2 is simply a waste of time and money. If someone was to come to me and say it wasn't SOE after all that made this game. I'd say, ah, that would explain it.

I miss EQ1 but still need something new. Perhaps one of you can give me a good lead on a new game.

I see nothing out there right now that's even worth the time to put into a game but there are a few coming out soon that look decent. Tabula Rasa is the one I'm hoping can break this stale market or you could get the EQ2 expansion and be completely bored in a whole new area.

I agree with Ring. I hate how there is no differences in toons. You seen one tank you seen 'em all. You'd a thought with EQ having such a huge variety of armor and weapons that things would be different. Even with classic EQ you still have different armor types. I hope w/ the upcoming expansion it changes, but knowing SOE we will just see 1000 raid zones while they worry about sorting everything else when population declines even more.

Agreed. EQ2 is a steamy piece of crap. WoW is much better, though too easy overall. If WoW had some hardcore ruleset servers with exp loss for PvE battle loss and looting ability in PvP battle loss, that would make it more challenging and real. WoW tradeskills also need to be harder to lvl in, to prevent everyone from mastering them all so easily.

I was also a hardcore EQdead player and need to point out that Verant gets the credit for making a quality game, while it was SOE that ruined it.

I would recommend following the development of "Pirates of the Burning Sea" which seems to be the brightest star on the horizon.

    Hey Ring,

Check out Vanguard Saga of Heroes.  Its being done by the original brains behind EQ plus various other talent that they have picked up.  Plus as an added bonus, the art in the game is being directed by Keith Parkinson(the famous fantasy artist that drew most of the EQ box covers).  The game looks and sounds like it will be amazing.  Several of my friends and I are just killing time with a few mmorpgs until this comes out.  I too played EQ and various other ones.  I am looking for something truly new and Vanguard sounds like its going to be my ticket. Thankfully while they are making sure it is a definite improvement over all the current crop of games, they are not "dumbing" the game down like most companies are doing these days.  Check it out at www.vanguardsoh.com if you are interested.

Agree, it looks good m8. Seems we have a few games with potential in the future. From what I can tell, between 7 and 11 months. I just have to find something to hold me over until then. I've already got the shakes and have had no luck finding a MMORPG Anonymous group to fight off the cravings.

I deny the population is going downhill so thereimage

TBH it seems whenever SoE makes a game people paint a doom picture for it.

I recently started playing SWG again and before i went in i saw people posting how the game was dead.Logging into the game all servers had medium to extreme heavy load at UK peak time which is not even US peak time(5-8 hrs difference).

So i can only imagine it at US peak time. And the screen was not lying(again as some SoE haters make it) because the cities was crammed with with people .

Why do folks make it a career to hate a bloody game company is beyond me.

Ahhh ok, so your opinion on what I find fun is more valid then my own Jorev? The things I find fun apparently don't count, you should decide whats fun for me right? After all, you know whats best for EVERYONE apparently since you sit here and troll with your WoW compaign.

If the game was so great you and swiftflow sure as hell shoulnd't need to be trolling.

I love when people say it wasn't SOE it was Verent. You know how Sony Online Entertainment came into being? Verent changed it's name.

I have to ask the people who say everyone wears the same armor, what the hell game are you playing? People wear a hodge podge of different types of armor. Some people look for armor that gives them more power, some go for STR and some go for straight Defense. I have yet to see anyone wearing the same armor I am. If they were I'd think they were psychic or stalking me to find the EXACT combination I have.

For anyone who hasn't played reading this, ask Jorev and Switft what their character name and what server they were on. They won't answer you because if they gave that information we could go there and see that they've either never played it, or only made it to level 7, and yet feel qualified to talk about the end game.

Actually Verant was the developers and of course Sony was the financial supporters.  The Verant name was dropped when Sony totally absorbed Verant(to have more control?)  Granted all the Verant team was still working at SOE for a while, but now most of the original members are gone, which is why I feel that EQ lost its magic and EQ 2 never quite had it.  Don't get me wrong I think both are decent games, but they are not what I am looking for.  Old EQ was much better then what they have now.  I am hoping and feel that Vanguard will finally be able to put out a game worth playing for years to come.  At any rate I have my fingers crossed for Sigil image

Smedley actually decided to sell Verrant (originally Red Eye) to Sony after EQ was such a sucess I beleive. I think it was probably always the plan if things were sucessful. However I am no expert by any stretch on the history of it.

For a few days I was starting to think the MMORPG boards had no morons. What are you 12? Most people have a story that either has truth, opinion or even being amusing. Yours is amazing, it has none of that.
