I had really mixed feelings. I played non stop from Launch till a few months after NGE and then every few months I would jump back on for a couple months. I had 2 accounts of my own and access to 5 or 6 others over the years. I was subscribed on my main account when I got word that they were going to shut down, Iquit and will never go back.I loved it and hated what they did, not so much to the game itself as to the players to make them all quit. Do not get me wrong the NGE sucked and the implementation is still the biggest knife in the back I have ever seen. But if it had improved the game and folks had come back I could have eventually forgiven them. That did not happen and so there is no forgiveness.
I feel bad for those who stuck it out and lived through all the dying servers only to have the game close on them, that is the reward for trusting SOE. I am happy that SOE will not make one more penny off of Star Wars after December and I would love to personally tell Smedley where to stuff it.
SWG died for me the day the NGE hit. I tried several time to like what was done but it just kept on getting worse. However its time to put the game down. Folks just need to learn to move on and find something else to do with their life.
I quit playing the day I logged in and found my Master Combat Medic/Master Doctor could no longer be either of those. On top of having to pick a new class, I was going to have to start grinding levels again. No thanks. The same thing happened to my sons Creature Handler/Bioengineer, gone with nothing even similar to choose to replace it.
Soooo I am not sad that the game is closing down. I actually wish LA had pulled the plug long ago just to take the money away from SOE sooner.
I am sad for the fans that are playing and enjoy the current version of the game. They do not deserve to be treated this way.
Do you HONESTLY think Lucas Arts gave a crap about the 500 or so SWG players?!
Lucas Arts didn't care...they gave up years ago when they allowed SOE to add in pink flying Ewoks with purple hearts. Lucas Arts had little to do with this aside from agreeing with SOE that it was probably wise to not renew the license.
Tux....pre-Shut Down Announcement the population was much larger than the mere 500 you make it out to be and you Know it Mr Blue Glowie. SOE has stated that the Population was stable and increasing, although no where near pre-NGE or Pre-CU numbers.
LA told SOE they were not going to renew the License in 2012, and Offered to Buy out the remaining Time in 2011 to remove the Choice of which SW MMO people played. Forced Choice to Play TOR or nothing but that flightless bird we do not mention on this Forum.
LA has treated SW:G like the Holiday Special since 2006 because they got slapped in the face by the reality that WoW subscription numbers were not going to happen to a MMO that is from a Niche Market IP.
STO is having the same reality check right now.
Games like EvE and WoW are giants because they appeal to Space or Fantasy fans. They are anomolies in regards to their sub numbers.
500 was an obvious exaggeration because ONLY SOE knows how few subs they really had. Pre-shut down, my best guess is 3000-5000 subs. 500 is probably much closer to the actual number of SWG players who wouldn't have bought SWTOR.
I gotta ask...why blame Lucas Arts so much? You think THEY came up with the idea of the NGE? Pink flying Ewoks? Zombies? Love fest? Staffing cuts? Replacing experienced Devs with QA people? Moving Lead Devs off SWG to DCUO? This list goes on...
Dude...reality time...those were ALL SOE decisions. Denial may help you deal with it, but it doesn't make a false statement true.
Lucas Arts was never even ASKED about renegotiating the license...Smed didn't even TRY to save your beloved game.
"We have a contractual relationship that's ending in 2012. Could we have renegotiated? Maybe, but I don't think that would be the right thing for the company."
See that yellow part? That's a REAL quote from a REAL SOE executive, the President of SOE even, about SOE's license agreement with LA.
You offer nothing but rumors with absolutely nothing backing up your outrageous claims. If you come up with something QUOTABLE and source-able, please link it, otherwise you're simply trolling with false information that completely contradicts what has been stated by the companies involved.

Say what???
SW is NOT a niche IP. SW video games are DEFINITELY NOT niche games, even. They tend to be some of the most highly anticipated and best selling games out there. If SW is niche, then there's no such thing as a mainstream IP.
That SWG was not at least ONE of the most popular MMO's out there, or couldn't at least sustain itself was a reflection of the GAME.

I used to play SWG all the time. In fact, it was my first MMO experience and I have shed a few tears to know that it's all coming to an end. Now I'm looking for your opinion on the game.
Is SWG a suffering beast to be put out of its misery (in kinder words, is it time to move on), or is it still a fun and entertaining experience for Star Wars fans that deserves to last?
I'm not a old SWG player but I know several that were. At this point in SWG or any old and neglegected MMO that will inevitably be shut down, I'd rather they be made freeware or playable for free somehow. Maybe not turned into the F2P model but something were people can buy rights to run their own private server or something. Personally, I don't care what happens to SWG but I feel the fans deserve far more than what they get at the end of an MMO's life. Waving goodbye to your fans might just be permanent.

Star Wars a niche IP? What? Star Wars movies & EU books and such are extremely popular and so are video games going all the way back to the 80's (X-Wing/TIE series, Jedi Knight series, KOTOR, etc). SWG was just handled so poorly.

I think he meant "niche" as in, biggest IP name in history. Able to sell books, games, toys, clothing, cereal, candy, plates, replicas, sell out Disney World, host it's own mega conferences...that kinda niche

Not to mention the numerous commercials that always have something related to Star Wars in it. And the multiple mentions in just about EVERY tv show or movie.
Are those the only 2 options? Because if they are, I assure you it is sure as hell not the 2nd option. SWG is no more "Star Wars" than Ewok Adventure was. Sure, there were Star Wars locations and Star Wars 'things' in game, but SWG has NEVER been a "Star Wars" experience except in name only.
um what game did you play?
SWG was THE star wars experience... from a certain point of view, 32 points of view.
SWG was meant to not be star warsy and iconic, not everyone or anyone was supposed to be Luke or Han, sorry if you wanted that off the bat but you did get it in the end.
In swg you were the dancer in the cantina, the guy selling ships to the pilot shooting ties, the guy selling speeders to the ranger tracking lizards to sell meat to the doctor who bought a new house from the architect in the politicians city.
Locations, animals, species, art, architecture, fashion... what wasn't star wars?
If you were lookin for everyone to be Luke, Han or Darth Maul well you get TOR, which is great in its own way, but no more star wars than SWG even if it is starwarsy and iconic.
personally i thing raph and the guys had a better vision than bioware, a SW mmo character should be a dude makin his way in the galaxy however he chooses. Its far more believable than a cut-out of the same jedi in theme park style standing next to 20 other jedi having done the same things in the same places on their way to the same place in the same gear with the same companion.
SWG is a game that no nlonger makes sense to keep running financially so it should be shut down. End of story. Any other argument doesn't really matter.
Don't agree they should have hand out the PRE NGE source code back then, still cant understand why they aren't doing it.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
I think it is sad SOE destroyed a great ip because of the NGE. If I was SOE I would be on it immediately trying to find ways to make another great sandbox mmo.

Old dead game that doesn't generate enough to stay a float.
get over it, most games die when they need to and some just won't go away.

If all the people who say how great the game was and are going to miss it actually paid for a sub, the game wouldn't shut down?

two words - Long Overdue
The game that most are saying was great isn't the game that is shutting down. That game has already been gone for several years.

At least the Holiday Special gave us Boba Fett...
Lol. So true.
QFE. Preach on, brotha. Preach on.

I was interested in the game, up until people leaked info from Beta. Figured it'd not be for me and never played it.
So my opinion is; this just gives SOE additional resources (probably some lost jobs sadly) to move on to bigger and better things.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

My opinion is that it should have happened years ago.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
SWG needed to finally be put out of it's misery,
It's a tough thing for players that invested so much time into the game over the years but seriously SOE knew this outcome for awhile now.
There will be new things that SOE can screw up now.
