Thing is I've never even had a little interest in buying this game. I just don't like the super hero genre. Sure I'll try it now but it's unlikely to get more than a few dollars out of me.(if I really like it) Same goes for STO.. CO.. CoH.. DDO(interest there but it seemed more like GW with a sub at the time).. Fallen Earth.. and almost all the games going free I havn't mentioned. With the exception of LOTRO and maybe EQ2(but let's face it it's old if it wasn't free it wasn't likely to get my cash.) None of these games would have had a chance in hell for my sub.
I think that companies just need to get in touch with the gamers that they're trying to catch. We don't want a space ship type game... Superheroes arn't mainstream as far as the mmo market.. and you can't really make a game that's a copy of a game that's pretty much free after buying the box and expect people to sub. LOTRO is the exception... and I'd call it the poster child of the F2P market. It didn't need to go down the rout but it did.. and made more money because of it.
They don't need to be different.. they can copy WoW as much as they like they just have to do it well. Polish is everything.. as is at least partially the feel of the game.. End game is extremely important as is the rate of content updates. If your busy the first six months with just fixing your game your doing something wrong you need to start feet running. If you can show you can offer a better service than WoW/ other AAA game for the same cost or less then I think then you'll be talking. If all your doing is making it semi free to gloss over your shortcomings.. well that's the case for most games nowadays.
Given how few players returned for the FREE 45 days from the SOE security breach, I'm very skeptical that DCUO will thrive as F2P.
Good games can justify monthly fees.
Bad games can't.
Bad, shallow, bug ridden, exploit filled, content deprived games that charge monthly fees AND feature a cash shop fail even quicker.
Nothing will prevent the same people who risked their $60 investment to exploit PvP from starting up random griefing accounts now.
Looking at WoW, a subscription fee never stopped people from exploiting hacking and grieving. And then ofcourse ontop of that the RMT adding additional.. questional conduct in that game, but lets not get side tracked.
Looking at other f2p games.. you really are making it sound like there is nothing but bugs glitches and exploits out there.
Wish people would stop assuming Warhammer will go p2w its a pvp centric game so it wouldn't work, period.
Anyway from what I've read DCUO should have been b2p (like Guild Wars) from the get go still can't believe Marvel let Soe ruin such a famous IP. Pull the plug and take back your license before Soe can do further damage with their model.
Firstly, MARVEL? you mean DC :P Nerd rage? Honestly, DCUO has great potential for what it could be, with recent rise of dynamic events, its perfect for a superhero setting, when the whole point to to save/destroy the world. But SoE decide to go with a traditional MMO style, where you move from zone to zone for quest.
The combat is fun, the movement powers is fun, the execution is at its worst tho.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
One thing to note is that DCUO apparently has 3x the player base on the PS3 than the PC. That's the platform it has the advantage in and that's the platform I think it will thrive in.
As for the general industry shift to F2P - players generally only play one sub title, but can have as many F2P games on the go as they want. Quality doesn't come into it except on a comparative basis, given the state of AC, EQ2, SWG or UO at launch; it's just now that players can easily wander off to another game if they want a similar experience.
Saw this one coming and it is badly needed. I shyed away from this game after trying the buddy pass. I hope it has improved greatly, but I have my doubts.
I feel bad for those who bought the game either on PC or PS3. You could see that this game was going to hit a F2P model quickly. It's gotten to a point where any MMORPG's need to free with a cash and access shop.

That's not really true either, things might have improved since the server merges but RoTR (a game review show) used to do a segment every week or so on DCUO for PS3, and were unable to continue doing it with so few people playing.
Though I agree it has an advantage to thrive on the PS3, while beta-ing it on that platform it was remarkable how few people participating had any clue of what MMO's even were and were litterally outraged by the monthly sub lol.
So now as a F2P it should probably fair pretty well player-wise, and actually might be a fair game since most people will likely just play it without ever buying anything at all. But with that in mind I have a feeling it will eventually shutdown completely since it won't be making any money still.
I knew this game was set to fail the day they said there was no crafting. They pulled to far from the common MMO model and alienated to many MMO fans. The UI sucked and they refused to write a UI for PC users. I was a pr-order customer that tried beta with a hopeful mind set but quickly asked EB games to switch my cash over to a copy of swtor.
I guess they figured that they got everything they could from box sales.....lot's of us stated that a subscription model wouldn't be sustainable due to lack of content (among other things), but I'm surprised they didn't opt into a buy2play model first.
As SOE has proven, they don't really have the track record for pushing out new content in a timely (nevermind frequent) manner. So, in order to get a cash store working, either they're going to have to take some things away and charge for it (which, given the lack of content to begin with, would be self-defeating) or else they put in pay2win items (which most people despise).
As I've posted a few times, lots of bad design decisions in this game -- this seems to be another. I can't imagine how much the DC license is costing SOE right now.... all I can say is, if you do enjoy this game, enjoy it for as long as you can.....
SOE is just a disaster. DCUO was my first and last experience with this company, and i should have known better because i was quite educated on their failures. overall, the game was worth the $60...i had a lot of fun until i hit 30 and logged about 40 hours in it. i did not sub after my free month ran out.
it's really sad how a bunch of "professionals" could let exploits run rampant for soooo long without addressing them. i left after i realized they would do nothing about balancing and hacks.
i will not be reinstalling once it goes f2p. too bad because the combat system is excellent.
Any word yet if this is going to basically be B2P on the PS3? I mean the disk is going to be 30 bucks for awhile, and I'm not sure how cash shops will do over all on consoles. I mean it seems a little more involved than DLC mostly.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

They have said that it will be F2P on the PS3 as well. No need to buy the disc

Oh sweet, thankies.

It's not even a year old, right? One of my testers was in beta, I think this past winter.
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.

It launched in February, if I recall correctly.
I kinda predicted it(yay me), though I thought they'd do it because of the way the game is designed, not because it'd end up in a subscriber freefall. I expected subs would drop quick, but not this quick.
I think it'll do much better as F2P. It WOULD have done much better as B2P. Had it been B2P, I'd have bought the box and launch, as well as the Green Lantern mini-pack, and quite possibly every decent value'd pack they'd make. It IS a fun game, IMO, it's just outrageously content deficient for a subscription game.

Correct. It's not even 10 months old...
Yikes, the full subscription mortality rate scares me.
I hope it does well.

Would of been nice of them to offer a free trail before even considering going free to play.
Now I will never get to play it as Im not a fan (and I dont like free to play games either)

This was pretty much always going to happen. Maybe I will try it out at some point but im not rushing to try it.
Should change the headline from "Headed for Free to Play" to "Finally goes Free to Play"

Nice. I will be checking this out when it goes F2P. Thank you for the heads up!
Gonna check it out.
love the last line pay 14.99 and get every thing for free! lmao

Hey fanbois, guess what happened to the game when you and the developers mocked or ignored PC-gamer complaints about the interface?
I'll give you a little credit though ... I was surprised it lasted THIS long before going F2P.
It's not even a year old, right? One of my testers was in beta, I think this past winter.
