General: Hellbreed: Old School Rogue-like Action

Hellbreed is a game that is sure to appeal to fans of the Diablo and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games with its point and click, hack'n'slash fun. MMORPG.com's Christina Gonzalez takes a look at the browser title and offers a few thoughts about Hellbreed. Keep reading and then leave a comment or two.

There are three gender-locked classes – the Siege Master, who is a melee character that uses axes and even explosives, is what I checked out in the demo. Huntress is your basic ranger, utilizing archery and taming animals. Warrior does exactly what he says on the package. Warriors can use any weapon in the game.

I'm pretty sure plenty of people played Nethack or ADOM before, maybe not the younger gamers, but the older part of community most likely had contact with it.

Still don't know why a Diablo clone is called rogue-like... It's not turn based is it? It's hack and slash action rpg. Please don't mis-use the genres.

The Wikipedia page for "Roguelike" has been around for 7 years now. A long time before anyone had heard of Notch.

    Nonsense.

People interested in RPGs on PC mostly know what roguelike is

This is in no way "rogue like", this is a diablo clone.  Is the developer actually describing it like that or is this just the reviewer.  Either way it seems like whoever is using the "rogue like" label never actually played Rogue or any of its ilk.  Its likely they heard someone use the term and thought it applied to any dungeon crawler.

I played the heck out of it on my Tandy 1000, even used to copy it to my ramdisk lol.  Dungeons of Dredmore is actually a pretty good modern rogue-like game, its only $5 on Steam.

I totaly like the game, even though it's a Diablo clone. It's quite addicting and I just love Diablo styled games like Sacred for example. It shows how far a browser game can go.

    LOL, Diablo is rogue inspired.

I just tried it and it seems like a fun game to waste time on, but, it froze on my first try and the second try i couldn't move towards a box when i click. I'll wait til the bugs get worked out before i spend anymonre time on it. But it did seem to be a good game.

I wish I could get a job as a MMO writer....at least I know what Rogue-like is.  ADOM is one of my favorite all-time games, and I still play it to date

That is/was a hard ass game

Aaaand would you describe Diablo as "rogue like"?  Inspiration is one thing, a sub-genre is something else.

The NEVER ENDING loads are just to much at times..  Even with a 50mbps +  dl speed you may as well go do something else for 10-15 minutes if you move to a new area..

Not to mention it being pretty bug filled and very clunky overall really.

Still, it's pretty impressive for a browser game none the less.

Unresponsive rubbish, it looks like somone vomited on your screen, and the "animations" are headache-inducing.

  • RednecksithRednecksith Member Posts: 1,238

Game runs like garbage, takes forever to load, doesn't save progress correctly, freezes, and the animations are just absolutely horrible. I think each attack is about 2-3 frames max, blech.

Stay away, this game isn't worth the time. Wait for Path of Exile or something.

    LOL ?

    Original Diablo is roguelike inspired.

Or if you want to go to details. original Diablo was a graphic representation of ANGBAND (which is one of major roguelikes)

But sucess of Diablo transcended it to complete new genre called "Hack&Slash"

Further on , everything that came after diablo, even diablo 2. Was not roguelike clone, but diablo clone.

Calling game as Hellbreed roguelike, shows lack of understanding in game design

Decent game .. but needs some attention to the bugs ... im gonna give it some time and see if they can get some things ironed out..

But definitley nothing like a "Rogue -like" game ..

If you wanna try the newest "Rogue-like" i would suggest Dungeons of Dredmor
