Rift: Ashes of History Preview

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Rift v1.5 "Ashes of History" update is scheduled to hit the game sometime next week. It's an ambitious update with a lot of new content. MMORPG.com Associate Editor Suzie Ford had the privilege of sitting in a a roundtable discussion about Ashes and she's got the full report. Check it out and then let us know what you think in the comments.

The new Chronicles system is a specially designed pair of dungeons (for now!) aimed directly at players who have yet to experience end game content for any number of reasons and to expose players to the huge overarching storyline contained in Rift. The Hammerknell and Greenscale’s Blight dungeons have new content and a new story geared to pairs of players or to ultra-buffed single players. When asked why there was a need to “overhaul” the end game content, Hal Hanlin was quick to say that overhaul implies that something is changing or being eliminated and that that’s not the case with Chronicles.

I'll be returning for Rift 1.5, mainly to check out 3 things: the Planar Attunement, Master Mode Dungeons and to see how much my Rogue Assassin & Marksmen were buffed. The rest just seems unimportant to me.

Well this will probably be my last month in Rift, seeing how SW:TOR will be out fairly soon, which will turn my High pop server into a Medium pop one.

Yeah I just dont see that, most rift players realize swtor is crap and are going to stick with RIft and probably add d3/gw2 to their gaming regimine. Cant wait for 1.5 hopefully they give warriors some love as well.

How do you know what most Rift players think about SWTOR?  Did you conduct a poll?  How big is your sampling size?  10 players?  20?  I think you're going to be surprised at how many people will leave Rift for SWTOR, considering that many subscribed to Rift as a way to hold them over until titles like SWTOR and GW2 came out.  And don't think Trion doesn't know this.  There is a reason why they are churning out content updates.  They realize attrition is coming and they are going to need to retain as much of their player base as they can.

Lol that's presumptuous. I'm a Rift player and I know that swtor is NOT crap, but I don't look at things so black and white. I'll have my Rift sub up for a while, even after SWTOR comes out, but I will be spending alot less time on it after that game comes out, and that's the general concensus I've seen on both my servers when players discuss the matter.

As a player who doesn't like to get involved in team play (real life commitments makes that difficult), I can honestly say I'm looking forward to the 1-2 man dungeons. I've enjoyed Rift these last few months and this will only make it better.

I liked Rift a lot. I got slightly burnt out after played a lot in beta and then post launch. I will likely return for this update though, it looks great.

I was really hoping the new instances were going to be a viable endgame path for soloers (I know, I know, we're all evil and need to be destroyed), but after watching several videos of solo players in full raid gear running them, that just doesn't seem to be the case. You pretty much need either a second player or, as mentioned in the article, an "ultra-buffed" character. Even in raid gear, it wasn't at all uncommon for people to die several times.

Essentially, this move to make the story more accessible to everyone still isn't making it accessible to soloers. If you want to run them alone, you'll have to get geared up in raids first, which seems counterintuitive.

I wish that Trion would spend the time making the path to 50 more fun.  The repetitive quest system is mind numbing and the Rifts stop being fun after level 20.  Thats how it was for me, I got to 42 and realized "what the heck am i doing? its the same thing over and over."

So it took them over 6 months to see that the rogue class was being over nerf and only had 2-3 spec's being used by the players....

I won't be coming back, but I do wish Trion the best of luck with Rift.

Sad it took them half a year to even attempt to fix the rogue class.

    Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD
    Playing: Sims 3 & 4, Diablo3 and PoE
    Waiting on: Lost Ark

Not even out a year and more patches(and quality cotnent) than Warhammer online.

It is best for the industry the MMO throne remains an dusty empty seat never to be filled.

This game deseve more players! How can people (those who especially like PvE) still play WoW while they could play this?

As much as I love Rift I'm going to be trying StarWars along with the rest of my Rift guild . We are already talking about forming one in TOR . I think some will play both and some will give up for StarWars . Personally I'll proberbly play StarsWars for a few months then when I get bored with it I'll play Rift for a few months when new contents out and proberbly continue like that back and forth . I've never had fanboy loyalty to any one game. For the first time in years with the new crop of mmos I think its unlikly I'll ever resub to WoW again and if I do it ll be at christmas to go back and see a few old mates for a month  . I get better and more challenging gameplay elsewhere . Also there loads of f2play mmos to play on a casual basis .

It's fortunate that I hate all things Star Wars. I won't be tempted to try the game at all.

Yeah, that was my problem with it as well.  I just couldn't stomach a return trip through those same zones.  And I don't feel their  game updates up to 1.5 have been that great.  Just more endgame raids and content and more gear grind.  In short, the same stuff Blizzard gets hammered for with WoW.  If they would spend some time and make the levelling process more enjoyable and in-depth, then this could be a very good game.  But level-capping in less than a month and then sitting around waiting for more raids to get released for more gear simply doesn't do it for me.

That being said, I give Trion credit for this new update, particularly with the Planar Attunement system.  They didn't do anything to improve the weakest part of the game (levelling), but at least they added something to do at endgame to make the need to roll an alt less important in terms of content.  I wish every game would seriously look into a form of alternate advancement for the endgame like Trion, AoC, and EQ2 have.

So when are they going to add fluff to the game , something other than warzones and raids.? One of the reasons I quit Rift after my free 30days was up after launch there was nothing to do really after you hit level 50, got fully geared for pve and pvp, Rifts were fun for a while till they got boring considering all the people who would rush to them like vultures. Until they can introduce something to this game thats not fighting or minigames, I won't be coming back. Shame since I have 2 level 50's on a account.

Game needs a lot more than fishing but I agree with you more fluff activities helps retain subs and people's sanities. Fishing, Casino/Bar Games, Treasure Hunting/Foraging, Collections System for vanity/combat items pets buffs achievements.

Fluff, you mean like artifact sets for alternate soul recalls,  titles, in game world events for unique items and mounts. World pvp quests for those that really want world pvp.  Achievements for pets titles mounts. Cairns and puzzles in every zone. You mean things like that?

You nailed it.  Though, a few of my friends came over and go t50 - then they quit from utter boredom.  Our argument was, "why are we doing instanced BG's here when we can go back and do them in WoW?"

Plus, after years of Dark Age of Camelot, I've grown tired of copy paste 2 faction models.  If I'm gonna play that way - I'll go to the guys that made it so darn popular.

Uhhhh, And were do you base your facts from? Have you even played the ToR Beta? I'm a Rift player and can hardly say that Starwars: The old Republic is "Crap". "I" for one will definitly will be canceling my Rift account as soon as I get my hands on my pre-order of ToR. As a Rift player I can firmly say that ToR is going to be bringing a hell of lot more to the table, in terms of "something differn't" then Rift ever did. Lets face it Rift, is just a rehash of everything we have already seen in other games, and was refined into one game, nothing more. I admire Trion for making a Descent game (God knows so many MMO's now are garbage) but it's still nothing new or engaging. I think you, and people like you will be eating their words once the game is released.

I think it all comes down to player prefererences.  I know some people in Rift that will be leaving for ToR, while others are planning on sticking with Rift.  I have also talked a couple different people who have played ToR beta... a few of them really liked it, a few of them didn't like it at all.

Either way, I think Rift will continue to survive just fine after ToR releases.  As for me continuing to play Rift after Diablo 3 / Guild Wars 2 releases.... it really depends on the quality of the content coming with the 1.5 and 1.6 patches.
