i wont disagree that it will be hard to choose. I just keep looking at the characters they used from the movies to model the classes. I am a Vader ... decision made - Sith Warrior.
Now the problem i have comes with alts. i usually like to role 2 classes just so i can change things up once in a bit. I'd really like to play a trooper but i dont want to change side to the republic. I have 0 interest in a BH or an operative, and i dont really want o play another Force user in the Inquisitor
For me the bigger question is which two classes can play together post level 10 when you leave the starter world so that 2 characters arn't in completely different places like Elves and Humans were in WOW until like level 20 or whatever that level was. I plan on trying all of the classes on both sides, but I want to do most of that with someone. :-) After the starter world (level 10) , does everyone end up in the same exact place? Whilan?
nope. been decided on trooper since i saw gameplay footage of it in may '10 and on Commando AC since it was announced last year(i think gamescom but not sure).
smuggler will be my first alt. not sure about my order after that. might go with an imperial class to change things up. i plan to play most of the classes(unsure about all yet)
when i they first announced the game back in '08, i planned on being a jedi knight, no question. but trooper just looked too fun and still does.
At the moment I am looking at a BH power tech for my main to play with my guild, and a Jedi Consular for my alt to play with my wife since she is leaning towards a Jedi Knight and refuses to even consider an Empire character. But all that may change based on info released in the next few months, and if I ever get some Beta time.
regarding those wondering about consular shadow/inquistor assassin tanks:
they use the force to increase both evasion and defense. in fact, during the pax prime panel, they had some people from the crowd come up and play the eternity vault. the inquisitor assassin was specced to be a tank and was the last man standing

I was not real happy with avoidance tanks in EQ2, so I am hoping that increasing both evasion and defense avoids the big hit issue. Made healing a avoidance tank a Pita.

When they added the tank to the Consular, I knew what I was going to play. I want to go through the Jedi story, and not just the aggressive negotiations route of the Warrior. And I enjoy playing the tank in most MMOs.
There was a dev post also talking about the AC of a heavy armor tank vs the light armor tank won't be that different when it comes to damage mitigation. I will see if I can find it, but more than likely you would find it first.
Alt is more of a problem. I don't know if I want to go with a whole new experience with no overlap in quests by going Imperial. Along the lines of a James Bond type play with the IA or get my DPS fix with dual lightsaber SW. Ofc my first plan was a smuggler alt, but all of them are so dang interesting as far a story goes. So I may have a problem after my main.
Edit: It isn't exactly as I said, but here is the post. And it also isn't about the consular type of tanking. But it does say that your choice of skills in your tree will determine your ability to tank or not more than your armor type.

I am clearly wanting to be a marauder which is designed to be a dps/dps AC. Without having full access to the spec trees, even with dual specs the only thin i can do is dps. DPS is fine, that is what i want to be, and i want to be great at it.
However, it seems, maybe I have misunderstood, that other 'tank' spec'd AC's are going to have nearly as good DPS. Vengeance Jugs have heavy armor, I will have stealth. We do nearly the same DPS, I'm down with that. Immortal Jugs have 'viable' DPS? I'm going to have to fight a tank for a top spot in dps?? Same with heal spec AC's?
This doesn't seem right, hopefully I have misread. This BS happens in Wow too. Since when does it make sense for the tank to do more DPS than the DPS?
I am down with 2 dps trees, but don't make hybrids, or an AC that can switch btwn tank and dps at the flip of a switch, have DPS equal or comparable to a pure DPS ACs.
Doesn't anyone know the saying 'jack of all trades but master of none'?
Like I said, maybe I have a misconception and someone can clear this up. Or maybe someone can tell me why an AC that can switch between tank and dps or heals and dps should have equal dps as a pure dps AC.
There are no specific 'tank classes'. This is where The Old Republic is different. There are roles you can specialize into by spending points in your skill trees. Which roles are available is based on your AC, but you will ultimately pick one or try to hybridize by spending points in multiple skill trees.
A DPS-specced Juggernaut is not even close to a tank specced Juggernaut. He will go down just as fast (or slightly slower due to slightly higher defense) than a Marauder.
Heavy armor is nice (we're talking about single digit % defense increase over medium nice), but in terms of game mechanics, what matters ultimately is your cumulative ability to survive or avoid damage. One AC can have armor, another AC can have the ability to deflect more damage, the resulting ability to survive would be the same.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore
I will rolling a Jedi Con at release but as far as AC, im still torn. My wife doesnt like to heal and she will be playing a Jedi Con as well. She is undecided too. Sage DPS, or Shadow for Tanking/DPS. Which leads me to roll a Sage for heals and added DPS. For when i solo, im going Bounty Hunter for sure. Merc i think. DPS classes always seem to do well soloing and with the added healing they do, I'll do fine.
So I take it medium is 5% stronger than light and heavy is 5% stronger than medium. So then it does make sense that your build will be more important than type of armor.
So my consular tank will be in light and have more force shields, absorbs and evassion to make up the 10% difference in armor or whatever variation they have. It will be intersting to see how it works. I don't want to play one in the up coming testing that I will get a chance with because I don't want to spoil the story. But I guess I could try a SI as a tank and see how that goes.
Thanks for finding that gaou, I knew you would find something.

Isn't that a bit rich? I mean by that rationale WoW is different since there are no Tank Classes either, a Paladin can take the Talents to be able to be a Tank or he could be a Healer, or he could be DPS. Come on.
That's how most class-based MMORPGs have been for years? You don't build your Character in games like these, you take one of the outlined routes and the community then finds the optimum setup and that becomes "Standard". The actual variation between various characters of the same class will be cosmetic and if they really mean that gear will be vastly less important it would also mean that more or less all from the same class perform/play the same (not necessarily a bad thing mind you, just a consequence). BioWare has stated the dual-specs are also coming further establishing that they intent to back up the tried and tested method of strict character setup.
i thought i wanted to be a Jedi but started to really dislike the whole jedi belief system so i'm a Trooper. Whether i'll be Vanguard or Commando is still up in the air.

Just a thought, but the quest choices do give YOU a chance to play YOUR Jedi any way you want.

No, I'll go melee DPS first followed by Tank and later on Support and Healer, only going for ranged DPS when all other has been exhausted.
