Some of these companies really need to learn that a big part of hype is generated when something is "new". A new game is announced and everyone gets excited and wants details. Then they want new details. And later, even more new details. New is exciting.
But some of these developers need to learn that they should just keep a lid on it until closer to release. Wouldnt it be great to hear about a new Star Wars mmo made by Bioware of all developters and not only that but the game will be coming out in a few months? NEATO!
But see thats not the case here. Lets announce the game years before it releases so that by the time it does, people are already half burned out on the idea. Its pointless. If they had announced the game just a year ago for instance, everyone would be hyped still.
Its one thing I sort of like about Bethesda. One minute you had no idea what was going on and the next? Bam. We're releasing a new game and it should be out in less than a year. Its excellent PR. Other studios really need to learn by this example. Im not talking about the games themselves as much as just keeping their mouths shut and working hard, and then tell everyone about it when its nearly ready.
I mean, when my wife bakes cookies she tells the kids she's baking them, but she usually starts long before she tells them. So they're all excited and only have to wait about 10 minutes or so to eat them. But if she tells them, " Hey, Im baking cookies tonight. " Hours pass, more hours pass, the kids grow impatient. They ask about it every ten minutes. Then after hour 5 they begin to get a little grumpy when thinking about the cookies. And by the time they finally get them they arent really that excited. They have more of a "its about time" attitude.
Who can blame them? Nobody wants to wait 5 hours for cookies. And no one wants to wait year upon year upon year for an mmorpg. Ignorance is bliss, and surprises are always fun. Especially when they are soon to be had.
Normally I'd agree with this, but the problem is they couldn't keep a lid on this game even when they were trying to. Maybe some don't remember what it was like prior to Biowares TOR announcement. Leaks, obsessive prying and dumpster diving were the norm. IMO they announceed while they felt they could still surprise some people out there.

I hate to be the troll, but looking at the gameplay, we have all played it before - it's WoW with Star Wars skins.
I think this is the main reason for the fatigue. They have copied the most successful MMO to safeguard their investments and produced something a bit boring.

yep and i like the wow skins. All i care about is game play and content. i could care less about grachics.
No. I'm saying that the graphics are different (but still cartoonish) but the game play is like WoW.
The game play is like every other mmo..including WoW. Until we graduate from keyboard and mouse as interfaces...I don't see it drastically changing anytime in the near future. Most mmo's involve a lot of button clicking and cooldowns. I only say most because I may have missed some that have miraculously changed the genre since the late 90's. Please, anyone, let me know if thats the case.
I hate to be the troll, but looking at the gameplay, we have all played it before - it's WoW with Star Wars skins.
I feel the same way about all games, including GW2. There are some people who act like GW2 combat is a brand new invention, never seen before! lmao Get real. I'm sure the combat will feel extremely familiar to anyone who has played video games for a few years.
This whole argument of comparing these upcoming MMOs to see which one is too much like WoW is beyond silly. WoW lost its appeal for many people mostly because the atmosphere of orcs, elves, dwarves and humans has been done to death. WoWs graphics look like a dusty dinosaur bone. And WoWs mechanics of grab a bunch of quests without reading them, raid raid raid, pvp battleground pvp battleground is done to death.
GW2, SWTOR, and other upcoming MMOs all share similarities to WoW, EQ, AC, etc. GW2 wants to set itself apart with pvp and random public quests. SWTOR wants to set itself apart with deeper story, 100% voiced dialogue, sci fi, alignment through story choices, and multiplayer quest conversations. The Secret World wants to set itself apart by blurring the barrier between game world quests vs real world quests, the horror genre, and deep and complex skill system. Arch Age wants to set itself apart by having sandbox elements, building, guild structures, realistic physics, large scale terrain.
Each MMO is going to try to keep some things that were popular in MMOs like WoW and also make changes that set them apart.
I'm not that excited about TOR either and agree games like Skyrim and BF3 will be played first.
I'm a Star Wars nut and if you told me three years ago I wouldn't be wildly interested in a Star Wars MMO made by Bioware I would have called you crazy.
TOR, sadly, doesn't look that special and is another WoW-like themepark with on-rails for space combat. Supposedly the highlight is the story and if that's the case the game will be waiting for me six months or whatever after launch. My motivation to run out and buy the game simply isn't there.
I personally am weary of the secrecy and "when its ready..." BS! If they weren't ready to announce a release date they shouldn't have begun a preorder campaign. Now I just want to know if I'll be able to play by the time Christmas break rolls around. And if not then I'm going to switch my focus to other games and BioWare can twist in the wind.
I read that EA has even considered a March '12 release if they need it. I promise you, if it releases past January I wont be playing this game. Feb of '12 is going to be packed with a lot of AAA games. Then GW2 will be coming out, and Ill be all over that with my guild. I sure hope BW doesnt make a huge mistake and assume people will buy it just because its a SW game.
We need a release date soon. SWTOR is starting to wither in peoples minds.
I guarantee it will be next year, quote me on it if ya want, but you'd rather it released in a
playable working state wouldnt you?
NO.. no i wouldnt, id rather they release it now even if it has to start as a text based game and get graphics later.
For me, quite simply; no. I don't buy into "hype", and so don't suffer from "fatigue."
I look forward to a lot of games, but I'm a patient man. I'd always rather they take the time to get it right than release it early. And if I like the IP or game enough, even if launch is not great, unlike most I'm patient enough to support the dev til they get it fixed.
I Dont think so guild wars two star wars tor have the same ideas story content. The only differents is guild wars 2 is buy to play and star wars tor is pay to play plus i dont think any loseing will be going on sounds like ot me your fanboy. I think these two games will do fine they both good. Star wars has its fans and so does guild wars two both games will do fine.
Just stop. The fanboy / hater spitting has been plaid out for months. Just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean you should blatantly go insulting them. Not to mention that it looks like, here, you are completely misunderstanding his point. I'd normally agree that the two games are not competing with one another (at least not directly). However, if EA waits to release TOR at around the same time as GW2, then they will be.
Only one has a sub, so players can enjoy both, but if they launch at around the same time, it's going to force players to devote more time to one game or the other. Maybe EA wants this, but it puts a huge risk on the longevity on a subscription based game. The smarter thing (if the game is indeed ready) is to release the game sooner, and get players invested in a subscription and updated content. Otherwise it becomes a battle over who has the better new car smell.
- To answer the OP, I would say that yes, fatigue is setting in. Personally, I've been going through cycles of getting excited or dissapointed by this title. It doesn't offer a ton of new things from the traditional MMO, but then again I did enjoy Rift for a time. However, I'd have to agree that if this game drags on passed the end of 2011; there is about a 99% chance I'm going to cancel my preorder, and play BF3, Skyrim, Torchlight 2,or a number of the other amazing AAA titles coming out which don't require a subscription. I've been burnt by quite a few MMOs (and I know I'm not alone on this), and i'm getting tired of throwing money away needlessly.
i think what he was trying to say about the fanboy stuff..... Is that every one has there own games ,you seem to take it out of context. Maybe you should reread what he wrote and you dont understand. I think he was not disagree with him. The fact is it was about him saying tor going against GW and it be losing battle...... That sounds like he showing favorites there... As for both games are the only games coming out and intrest me atm.

I think the fact of the matter is these types of games never release perfect. The risk versus benefit ratio has to be right for them to release it. In my view with 2 more months they will have achieved close release state perfect as they will get. Theres a reason why we have patches today. Non mmos are releasing games unfinished in some sense then fixing the bugs thru patches. So yea a playable working state sounds good to me. I dont think they want to compete with GW2 head on. I think tey will lose that battle.
Can you rub my crystal ball and tell me that again please because you seem to know what happends in the furture ....As for they losing battles against each other i dont think so.... they both offer different styles of game play and story. Then again guild wars 2 is good also but i can tell you another game thats way better then guild wars 2, but this is not about that its about tor and guild wars 2 :P. You see guild wars 2 copyed star wars in story content and Voice. I played guild wars i never liked it but its ok. But the medevil fantasy dragons stuff is getting old serious. As for guild wars 2 having you make your own story at the intro of the game while bioware story is making choices upon entering the game. There alot to say about these two games but when they both release i dont think i seee ether of them going down. It will be tough fight because guild wars has its players so does tor.

Well, I clearly lack the mind reading skills you seem to possess. I can only comment based on what he posted, not what you thought he meant to post.
Also, if you read what I said, I stated that his comment on 'each has it's own fans' will be true as long as the games don't launch at around the same time. There is overlap in people following both these games. It's not as black and white as 'star wars fans on one side of the room, gw2 on the other'. Many players are looking forward to both (and for primarily different reasons). When you put both of these games out at the same time, then the payment model is much less flexible, as it forces players to devote their time primarily to one game or another. MMOs, more than most single player games, push players to invest most of their time into playing the game. Even though one is sub, and one is not, the time investment alone will be enough to segregate players. Don't forget, that many players still play(or played) WoW, not because they still enjoyed the game, but because they spent so much time / hand friends that played that it was hard to quit cold turkey.
Can you rub my crystal ball and tell me that again please because you seem to know what happends in the furture ....As for they losing battles against each other i dont think so.... they both offer different styles of game play and story. Guild Wars 2 copied SWTOR by using voiceovers and a branching story? Are you trolling, or just misinformed? Seriously.
As for people who like to say "the fantasy stuff is getting old", tell that to people who are eagerly awaiting "The Hobbit" or the millions of people who still play D&D. It's not getting old, it's getting old to you.
I hate to be the troll, but looking at the gameplay, we have all played it before - it's WoW with Star Wars skins.

No. I'm saying that the graphics are different (but still cartoonish) but the game play is like WoW.
Explain what you mean by gameplay. Do you mean questing, tab-targetting, hotkey mashing, endgame raiding, etc? If you do...welcome to 95% of the MMOs currently on the market. I mean, if those are your criteria, nearly every game is a WoW re-skin.
If you mean something else, I'd be willing to bet you aren't correct. The overall concept is themepark, so in that respect it's like WoW. The game itself, however, is not a re-skin of WoW at all. That's an oversimplification for people looking for a reason to not buy the game when the reality is that they've probably just grown weary of the themepark genre of MMOs to begin with. People that have spent any significant time playing WoW, and at the very least researching this game, can tell you that it's not a simple WoW knock-off in anything but game style.
Set a release date - Fail to meet release date - move date back = community upset
Set a release date - Launch - game not up to standards (it will never meet this community's expectations) = community upset
Don't set a release date - game launches well = community upset (because it took too long)
Don't set a release date - game launches poorly = community upset (because it wasn't finished)
-----
Point is, Bioware cannot win. So Bioware does what they need too - launch when its ready. People will still play it and nothing will change that. People, I do not think, are not running out canceling their pre-orders.
At this point, the game better launch well or their will be a lot of anger and rightfully so. Most people will tolerate the time it takes to release the game if it releases well. if not, it could get ugly for sure.
/agree
I think that it is notable that people are so upset about delayed release date that it wouldn't surprise me if this fueled bias against the game throughout its life. People can be amazingly vindictive when they feel they have been injured.
Just a quick reminder that the NDA is still in effect. The only thing you can reveal is that you are in beta.
Any opinions on beta content, or even just telling people anything leading to such in a wink wink fashion is not permitted here.
Hi - not trying to start anything or disagree, but what is MMORPG.com's interest in the beta? These players agreed to a (shakey internet) contract between themselves and EA. AFAIK, they didn't get these slots through MMORPG.com nor was MMORPG.com in the contract.
What is the benefit to MMORPG.com policing EA's NDA?

Bioware's co-founder outright stated WoW was the model for TOR when he stated World of Warcraft "...is a touchstone. It has established standards, it's established how you play an MMO. Every MMO that comes out, I play and look at it. And if they break any of the WoW rules, in my book that's pretty dumb."
ehh almost every mmo I've ever played I've thought "what if they'd waited another year.. or two even." Thing is the game will never be in development twice. Trust me as much as you might feel you wish the game was out now no matter the state of the game if it isn't ready you'd be bemoaning the fact a year or two down the line wishing they'd have held on longer. There are other games to play and things to do. Life does not revolve around these things no one is injured by having to wait longer.
