The Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone has been updated with new information about two features that have been long-anticipated: Chocobo mounts and Airships!
Players will have the ability to earn a Chocobo whistle by joining one of the Grand Companies and purchase the whistle with 3,000 company seals.
For those players who find that a steep price to pay, Chocobos will be available for rent. Chocobos can be rented in several locations for 800 gil for a ten minute ride.
Airships will also be arriving with v1.19 and will allow players quick transport between the three city state of Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah and Gridania.
Read more about both new modes of transportation on the Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone.

All i have to say is WOW !
I never lasted long enough in the game to know those things never existed.I got frustrated early on by too many things,so i left the game beofre entrenching too much of my time.
I honestly cannot believe they released the game without the most common of FF traits the chocobo and Airship, just incredible.I think that alone tells how they tried to rush this product out the door and to this day it proves people are not playing for free, they are playing still yet in beta phase.
As i click away from these threads,i'll still be shaking my head in disbelief, what was Square Enix thinking and who the heck is in charge of all the poor directioin that has gone on their for the last 3+ years?Square Enix was my most beloved game producer,i felt that no matter what rubbish was coming out every year,i always had SE games to fall back on.This however is no longer the case, every single thing they have released for the last few years has been god awful and looks rushed out the door.
The ONLY thing Square Enix still does better than everyone else is,details in effects, combat pace and their cutscenes are second to none. They some how have managed to ruin the rest of game design for whatever reason, greed comes to mind.
My personal opinion as to what happened was that after they saw it took 5 years just to break even with FFXI,they figured they didn't want to risk that longevity again. They started to aim for faster production, cheaper costs,it is however not paying off for them.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Can anyone tell me of the PVP in this game? It's my main focus although I definitely like to engage in some PVE. I have seen little/no content in regards to PVP. Arenas/open world? level requirements? Anything.

I agree with you on the fact that they rushed this product out to door, the only reason I have played the game as long as I have is because even though the current zone design is plain awful, everything still looks absolutely amazing. Show how much aesthetics really do matter in video games. Regardless, these things (chocobos, airships, etc.) are staples of the franchise and should have been there from the beginning. I honestly feel though that SE is not trying to be greedy, I'm not sure how aware people are that their profits don't go straight into their pockets, most of them are being fed into making this game worthy of the FF brand name. They lose loads of money just keeping these servers up; although I'm sure the hit has been relieved a bunch because of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which SE helped develop btw (So maybe you can still rely on SE games after all?). SE is working their tail end off to take this game to a state of being complete, and eventually I foresee it being one of the best mmos in the market. I've never seen developers so dedicated to a project as i have in this game, and I guess that's where the other half of my fun with game has come from so far--seeing the hard work of the game creators in action. So don't write off SE and FFXIV so quickly, let the game bake a little longer in the oven and come back to it in half a year and see where it stands then.
P.S. SE's game franchises far surpass the scope of the FF and KH franchise.
Imho, SquareEnix has never been great.
SquareSoft was though, and so was Enix, but the merger of both entities into one was the beginning of the end.
Both companies were responsible for major rpg titles, Square obviously with the Final Fantasy series, and Enix with the Dragon Warrior series.
These two series of games were largely responsible for defining the rpg genre in video gaming early on, they both had huge levels of talent within each respective company, yet after the merger the company as a whole has been in decline over the years. Maybe not in terms of profits, but most definitely in terms of quality.
Just a personal observation.
@Cameo3 Like I said with the other guy this game is not even close to being finished, it's pretty much still in beta if you want to put it that way. I doubt there will be PVP for like another year or so, so if you're looking for PVP I would suggest GW2 when that comes out.
@Kost Dungeon Siege 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Tomb Raider, all pretty good right? Wait, SE was involved in making those? Whaaaat?! :O No way! Yeah way.
while FF went down the crapper ever since 9, the dragon quest series has always been pretty strong. until square got their grubby talentless hands on the series and showed off the awful looking DQX, ugh. so much for that series.
DQ 8 was garbage already, after playing for some time there only thing I start to ask was, "WHERE THE HELL IS DHARMA TEMPLE? after that I just finish teh game and really, last dragon quest is the 7 after that all is crappy... FF12 is funny though, its the first game I played the tutorial part of the game is better then all the rest.
Thats because there is no PVP content..... I'm guessing you never played FFXI..they had ballista...but yea. You won't get any PvP content for a very long time or ever
"In the immediate future, we have this one, and then weve got another one that is actually going to be so were going to have, what we want to do, is in January, what were targeting to do, this may or may not happen, so you cant hold me to it. But what were targeting to do, is have a fun anniversary to the Ilum shenanigans that happened. An alien race might invade, and they might crash into Ilum and there might be some new activities that happen on the planet." ~Gabe Amatangelo
The producer/director is a huge fan of PvP with having played games like DAoC for years. He has never even played FFXI seriously.
In good or bad, PvP is coming, and it's not going to take very long for it to arrive.
It has been stated that FFXIV will be a almost exclusively PVE game, if and when PVP arrives, it will be totally optional, like ffxi was.
It will not be included in PVE. It'll be kinda like GW2 i guess, it will have a battleground at most maybe, but while questing no one is going to challenge or gank you.
So, in theory, having PVP doesn't matter either way. I support it, as it gives those who want it a venue to do that. those that dont?
Never have to worry about it
EDIT: and with all the work left to do on PVE, i HIGHLY doubt it will be soon Hyanmen. once they have an actual GAME together, then and only then will and should they even think about pvp
The Deep Web is sca-ry.
So they are greedy, yet FFXIV Is free to play for an undetermaned amount of time due to them saying its not up to the standard they think it should be....
Sorry they don't sound greedy at all.....
Thats like a guy giving you a sammich for free and you telling him "whats wrong with it?"
Wow...most everyone doesnt even try a game very long to know its faults and good sides... Yes we know that it was lacking on game content. But guess what it has an awesome crafting system! Handling is f****ing retarded if yu dont hook it to a PS3 controller like its meant to be, then it runs smooth as hell. Graphics are damned amazing in it. Story is pretty awesome. Not to mention the company itself admitted its mistake of early realease and gave the game to a new boss to make and they are in the process of doing so and doing well at it.
ALL GAMES HAVE ROUGH STARTS SOME MORE THAN OTHERS. If you have any brain youd try a game, if you dont like it because of mechanics leave for a bit. Then come back and try again.
the game has potetential but atm is boring as hell
doing some leves and loging off...
yeah u can try to form a group in order to do something.........but GL , the LFG system sucks
the population is low , plenty of ppl in uldah , 50% afk / seeking repairs , or just bored to death....
this game need content badly and both solo/party .....a more intuitive LFP system
chocobos and airships are nice.........if have somewhere to go ......
ok, so purchasing the game may be a downside for some, and releasing games in the state ff14 was released in is very bad. But besides that you have nothing to complain about. The game is in a very playable state and getting better with each patch. And there is stil no sub atm.
To hold onto old gripes is just plain stubborn.
I agree completely. Even in the beginning for me it wasn't a waste. I played with a big group of friends who still play to this date. The game has gotten better. A lot of people will still complain because, well....it's what people do, but I still find it very enjoying. This patch and the one to follow it will be fantastic. People will come back once PS3 release comes out.
The game is free to play? I thought you had to buy the box or key for download? If not that's the best news I've heard all day.
You have to buy the box, but there is no monthly fee...
Dungeon Siege 3 was developed by Obisidan, Deus Ex was developed by Eidos and Tomb Raider Guardians of the Light was developed by Crystal Dynamics; SquareEnix was merely the publisher for all of them.
And while it is true that Eidos is owned by Square Enix (and due to that, they also own Crystal Dynamics), it's not exactly the same as saying SE developed them. As a similar note, you wouldn't say that The Elder Scrolls series or Rage was developed by ZeniMax, would you?
SquareEnix has been a publisher of good number different games, many are either hit (Deus Ex) or miss (Kane and Lynch 2), but I've found games that have been developed directly by them to be fairly lackluster since the merger.

As for on-topic, the rent-a-bos and airships are a good step, though I won't lie and will admit that I expected something like this to have been existant at release. I'm not sure why they chose not to, seeing as they've been in every FF in some way, shape or form. Still, they're trying to make up for it. Though progress is slow and as of now, I'd still say it's not yet at a "release" state.
You have to buy the game but its dead cheap like $10-15 for the collector's edition unless prices spiked back up as rumors have told.
If you liked FFXI or just wanna try it out I'd say its worth a buy. Be warned the game is dead boring if you intend to play alone and can be difficult or confusing at first but stick with it. with bi-monthly updates of redonculous proportions the game should be up and running full speed in early 2012.
If you need a server to call home come to Trabia or goto Besaid they have the most active and friendly players. I am on Trabia so if you stop by send Keith Dragoon a tell I'll be sure to help out where I can.
It's a good game with a lot to offer.
I won't bother trying to convince anyone here.
FFXIV is a very good game now, the trick is to have friends! If you want to run through everything solo, then you're going to be bored. Just like FFXI, FFXIV is a very pro-community game. Granted it's not nearly as forced upon you as in FFXI, but it's still a blast when in a group of 8, taking down monsters twice (or more) your level in epic battles. With each patch this game gets better and better.
They dont develop those games, they just publish it. Big difference.
Taken from wikipedia
"As with book publisher or publishers of DVD movies, video game publishers are responsible for their product's manufacturing and marketing, including market research and all aspects of advertising."
SquareEnix just inherit all SquareSoft achievements, after that it all went southwards. They butchered front mission, turned it into crappy TPS. They recycled FF7, FF:Tactics to death and beyond.
FFX-2? What's up with that? And the latest abonimation FF13. Yuck.
1 year to fix airships , wtf? this game is wrong, should be canned before more of the FF IP gets burned. pro community ? lot of potential ? it should at least be better than it predecessor , or not ?
So much negativity without any positive side. The game has come a long way since it was first released. Yes it feels like a Beta... Hell, even the new director said it is almost like an alpha/beta and that there is so much more that needs to be improved and added before they can even consider charging a monthly fee for it.
(Whether this is honorable or a PR stunt is up to opinion, no facts to it. Can only take the guy at his word.)
Look at the upcomming patches, and what has already been changed from the game since it was first released as a laggy, crashy, buttonmashy, spammy, crafting-brokeny, marketless, storyless, and utter boring shell of a game/gameengine.
It hasn't been very long and events and updates are being cranked out and tested... And you would have to agree that the updates (After the new director came in) have had a very positive effect on the community in terms of balancing and playstyles.
In my opinion, give it time (Especially since they arent really charging for it anyway...). If you are interested, try to find a group of people to play with or find a linkshell on a forum or fansite and ask to join. Other players make this game so much better since thats the way it was made to play. (like FFXI.)
If you still have major doubts, wait till the PS3 version comes out... If it is still a pile of good looking garbage at that time, then you can finally mark it out of your books. (hopefully, the director knows he better release a proper game at PS3 release time. :P ...Since... Thats kinda how the market goes/will look at it upon re-release.)
