IMO, it was unwise for VG to use non-industry-standard class names. Standard class names, created by D&D, have been in use for 40 years. People recognize them and like them.
Take a hamburger as an example; everyone knows what it is. What if some restaurant decided they were going to call it "blood-patty," instead; and perhaps call the french fries "yellow strings." At the end of the day, this restaurant would simply have less customers.

Vanguard isnt based on D&D.
Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Monk, Bard, Cleric, Sorcerer, Druid, Necromancer are vaguely like the D&D class and got the same name and sometimes even same names for abilities (for example, the Vanguard Paladin has a healing skill called Lay on Hands).
Warrior are somewhat like Fighter, Shaman are somewhat like Druid, both got names that are close.
Dread Knight, Blood Mage, Disciple and Psionicist do not have any D&D equivalents.
All Vanguard class names are perfectly intuitive to anyone who knows classic fantasy MMOs like EverQuest, WoW etc. In fact, Vanguard has much nicer naming like for example WoW, which insulted Rangers as being "Hunter".

you're probably one of those people who just can't do anything for himself. took me several seconds to google vanguard soh classes.
Disciple - healing partially by using combination of melee attacks, martial melee moderate DPS, high survivability, feign death, great wipe recovery, best solo class in game.
Shaman - three versions at level 15 (Bear - tanking shaman - strong soloer, low melee DPS, high surv / Wolf - less mitigation, moderate melee DPS / Phoenix - caster shaman, even lower mitigation, some kiting, moderate caster DPS, strong solo). Strong solo class.
Cleric - Healer, melee low DPS, high mitigation, useful buffs. Strong solo class.
Blood Mage - Healer, moderate caster DPS, quite tough to play. Moderate solo class.
Spell DPS:
Druid - Highest survivability, however almost no survivability if your kites are resisted. Best kiter, lots of DOTS damage, moderate burst damage, useful buffs. Strong solo class.
Sorcerer - Very high burst DPS, kiting possible but harder than druid, quite low survivability. Poor solo class.
Necromancer - Moderate DPS, DOTS dots, debuffs, feign death, pets that can taunt and hold agro, best survivability among casters. Strong solo class.

GREAT description overall! Interesting because when I started Vanguard (at Launch) I thought My Main would be a Sorcerer or Paladin, but as time went on I came to LOVE My Disciple...Paladin was OK though...Sorcerer was REAL tough Solo...I liked Ranger a bit too...

Bard has high downtime between mobs, even two 2dotters can kill you, must kite 3 dotters and higher, which takes ages, since bard doesn't really have any powerful dots. Bard was designed for groups in my opinion.

This reads as if every group of tank, healer etc would have one class that is a good solist, one that is bad etc. This is completely wrong.
- Shaman: Bear Shaman is a great solist, thanks to good mitigation. Wolf and Phoenix have much less defense, though, so they have to resort to kiting pretty quickly. I would vote for Phoenix Shaman as worst solist of all healers - they are much like Blood Mage, except they dont have lifetaps to heal themself & do massive dps at the same time. In fact Phoenix Shaman gets pretty laughable dps, hardly more than Wolf.
- Cleric: Is only a good solist if you are a really patient person, and your opponent is not a healer (Cleric gets a healing debuff - but even that is sometimes not enough for really strong healing mobs). Very low dps. Even if you're Death or, definitely better in respect to dps, War, dont expect any wonders in that department. Now they buffed their mana regen, they are pretty much unkillable, though.
- Druid & Sorcerer: Both have to kite. Both get levi. Both have no defense and little hitpoints, but very high dps. Both can slow their opponents. So WHY is Druid considered the better solist ? LOL
- Bard: Err ... definitely a much better solist class than Monk. Can kite with extreme runspeed (and debuff the opponent). Low ranged damage, though.
- Monk: Second worst solist class after Warrior. Can heal themselves much better, though (on a loooong timer), may get a crafted weapon with lifetap on higher levels, and can fake death if nothing else helps.
- Ranger: err, "Kiting possible" ? Thats true for the Rogue with their runspeed selfbuff etc. Ranger is an amazing kiter - snare, runspeed, massive instant ranged damage, so really all they really lack is levitation.
- Warrior: I am not aware they have "the best mitigation". They have the best aggro though. Yes they are underwhelming when solo. Needs a dualbox (or a dedicated guild) to level them comfortably.
- Paladin: AFAICS the best mitigation, and great aggro (not as good as War). This class is quite OP right now. Great spike dps through virtue points possible. Lowest dps of all tanks.
- Dread Knight: Err ... are you kidding ?!? LOL ! DK gets really good dps, no question - but Warrior gets better. DK is however the best debuffer in the whole game, at least from a raid perspective. Also great solist, best solist when it comes to groups of opponents (thanks to area lifetap).

Actually Rangers arent that great soloers to begin with. Like many other classes, they need room to kite or they stand no chance with tougher mobs.
My own Bard never went any far. But I have talked with people who tried multiple classes and they all complained that their Bards are very inferior when solo.
Bards are the same as rangers, but they completely lack the amazing dps of ranger when ranged. Like Rogue and Paladin, they can only use the most simplest of bows and crossbows, and AFAICS they dont get any special ranged abilities, like the Ranger gets them in masses.
And Disciple is the king of soloing because they can TANK ANYTHING *without* kiting.
Necromancer is fine as long as they can pettank. If that doesnt work, they can fearkite. If that doesnt work, they can fake death. So yeah, Necromancer is one of the best solists, probably the best of the dps classes in this respect - but they arent superior to Disciple.

Bards are okay if they can kite,that's the buttom line.
Rangers are okay if they can kite but in built up places or dungeons then they are dead.
Necros are great soloist but the same applies to them as to all other kiters.
Disciple is king.
Tuurgin Shammy is king.

Brad made both games, EQ1 and Vantard, he is completely retarded when balancing classes. He has this retarded conception that class balance soloing doesn't matter. Both games are flops, EQ1 at its peak with little competition lost players at an alarming rate when new games were released due to lack of class balance SOLOING. We warrior players refused to be duped into playing a game with WIMPIORS and gave Vantard a pass.
Little kids have plenty of time to set up groups for hours on end (no responsibilty), adults don't-soloing is vital
Brad hires and fires-he hires the same clueless dolts to set up classes while Blizzard hired EQ player greats including the #1 warrior player on ALL EQ1 servers.
I and a huge number of fans of the warrior class aren't playing brad's WIMPIOR, it is old and time for him to stop screwing the class.
EQ1 website Steelwarrior was probably the biggest class site on the entire web. When they sided with Brad and Sony and made raiding a priority and allowed the screwing of warriors to continue they lost hundreds of thousands of posters and players.
I really don't care what the idiots on this site think, they all want games that will flop. Soloing for every class is a #1 priority or you will have a pitiful player base. You guys don't care till your game world is empty and it shuts down, then the fact gets rammed home to the dummies posting for EQ1 style games. EQ1 is long dead thank goodness, the game sucked and the crowds have spoken, Vantard sucks too!

This reads as if every group of tank, healer etc would have one class that is a good solist, one that is bad etc. This is completely wrong.
- Shaman: Bear Shaman is a great solist, thanks to good mitigation. Wolf and Phoenix have much less defense, though, so they have to resort to kiting pretty quickly. I would vote for Phoenix Shaman as worst solist of all healers - they are much like Blood Mage, except they dont have lifetaps to heal themself & do massive dps at the same time. In fact Phoenix Shaman gets pretty laughable dps, hardly more than Wolf.
- Cleric: Is only a good solist if you are a really patient person, and your opponent is not a healer (Cleric gets a healing debuff - but even that is sometimes not enough for really strong healing mobs). Very low dps. Even if you're Death or, definitely better in respect to dps, War, dont expect any wonders in that department. Now they buffed their mana regen, they are pretty much unkillable, though.
- Druid & Sorcerer: Both have to kite. Both get levi. Both have no defense and little hitpoints, but very high dps. Both can slow their opponents. So WHY is Druid considered the better solist ? LOL
- Bard: Err ... definitely a much better solist class than Monk. Can kite with extreme runspeed (and debuff the opponent). Low ranged damage, though.
- Monk: Second worst solist class after Warrior. Can heal themselves much better, though (on a loooong timer), may get a crafted weapon with lifetap on higher levels, and can fake death if nothing else helps.
- Ranger: err, "Kiting possible" ? Thats true for the Rogue with their runspeed selfbuff etc. Ranger is an amazing kiter - snare, runspeed, massive instant ranged damage, so really all they really lack is levitation.
- Warrior: I am not aware they have "the best mitigation". They have the best aggro though. Yes they are underwhelming when solo. Needs a dualbox (or a dedicated guild) to level them comfortably.
- Paladin: AFAICS the best mitigation, and great aggro (not as good as War). This class is quite OP right now. Great spike dps through virtue points possible. Lowest dps of all tanks.
- Dread Knight: Err ... are you kidding ?!? LOL ! DK gets really good dps, no question - but Warrior gets better. DK is however the best debuffer in the whole game, at least from a raid perspective. Also great solist, best solist when it comes to groups of opponents (thanks to area lifetap).

Actually Rangers arent that great soloers to begin with. Like many other classes, they need room to kite or they stand no chance with tougher mobs.
My own Bard never went any far. But I have talked with people who tried multiple classes and they all complained that their Bards are very inferior when solo.
Bards are the same as rangers, but they completely lack the amazing dps of ranger when ranged. Like Rogue and Paladin, they can only use the most simplest of bows and crossbows, and AFAICS they dont get any special ranged abilities, like the Ranger gets them in masses.
And Disciple is the king of soloing because they can TANK ANYTHING *without* kiting.
Necromancer is fine as long as they can pettank. If that doesnt work, they can fearkite. If that doesnt work, they can fake death. So yeah, Necromancer is one of the best solists, probably the best of the dps classes in this respect - but they arent superior to Disciple.

Bards are okay if they can kite,that's the buttom line.
Rangers are okay if they can kite but in built up places or dungeons then they are dead.
Necros are great soloist but the same applies to them as to all other kiters.
Disciple is king.
Tuurgin Shammy is king.
Dread Knight is good as well but nothing compared to the above two.

That info on Wikipedia about Vanguard classes is very general, but in all shortness very accurate.
Brad made both games, EQ1 and Vantard, he is completely retarded when balancing classes. He has this retarded conception that class balance soloing doesn't matter. Both games are flops, EQ1 at its peak with little competition lost players at an alarming rate when new games were released due to lack of class balance SOLOING. We warrior players refused to be duped into playing a game with WIMPIORS and gave Vantard a pass.
Little kids have plenty of time to set up groups for hours on end (no responsibilty), adults don't-soloing is vital
Brad hires and fires-he hires the same clueless dolts to set up classes while Blizzard hired EQ player greats including the #1 warrior player on ALL EQ1 servers.
I and a huge number of fans of the warrior class aren't playing brad's WIMPIOR, it is old and time for him to stop screwing the class.
EQ1 website Steelwarrior was probably the biggest class site on the entire web. When they sided with Brad and Sony and made raiding a priority and allowed the screwing of warriors to continue they lost hundreds of thousands of posters and players.
I really don't care what the idiots on this site think, they all want games that will flop. Soloing for every class is a #1 priority or you will have a pitiful player base. You guys don't care till your game world is empty and it shuts down, then the fact gets rammed home to the dummies posting for EQ1 style games. EQ1 is long dead thank goodness, the game sucked and the crowds have spoken, Vantard sucks too!
