All the failed FFA-PvP MMOs just need to look at EvE and how it's done right. FFA PvP and full loot does work, if you divide the world into different zones with different rulesets.

A game where there's no unconsentual PvP is basically not a sandbox anymore. In a sandbox the player allways should've the option to play the way he wants and if you take FFA PvP away, then you've taken one of the biggest options away there is to solve problems between players.

Anyways... items not decaying completely is the most rubbish thing to come up with. It basically destroys the economy and makes crafting a one-time-effort.

Absolutely imo.   Eve online has achieved what very very few games have achieved, longevity, true sandbox, and rutheless pvp - but with rules that protect those that are smart enough and willing to invest time in research and learning to understand the social dynamics that are going on all around them.  Thats the key to Eve, it doesnt try to dumb down or patronise - what it does is offer a sophisticated world with a warning 'come and play if you are willing to learn'.  Ive been playing for nigh on 30 years at about 20 hours + a week, and it is one of the most sophisticated games I have seen and played, and that sophistication is not game mechanics or slick UI, its about smart engineering and understanding to create the enviroment to allow a gaming community to evolve.
