sad, none of these games you guys listed is 'open' like elder scrolls. In elder scrolls you can walk to anywhere in the game there is not an uber Level 100 mob that prevents exploration
There really isnt anything out that can touch elder scrolls oblivion in this regard.
LOTRO is limited in the fact its individual areas on the map are clearly defined and divided, always by impassable mountains. In WoW there are plenty of mountains you can just run over if you find the right route whereas most areas in LOTRO aren't adjacent to all the areas surrounding and there are only two areas you can get to from one area, usually set path. WoW is more open world in that sense.
I'm surprised somebody thought WoW was seamless... As far as i know, the only seamless MMORPG out there is perfect world. However i haven't played vanguard yet, but i suppose it's also zones. However, every MMORPG that comes out now should have seamless gameplay, even RealmCrafter 2.0 (a MMORPG engine of 100 USD for those who're wondering) supports seamless gameplay...
The only reason why seamless gameplay wasn't introduced eralier because the computer systems "didn't like it". But that isn't a problem anymore .
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
I havent heard of any new seemless world map games out, or in development today. I haven't kept up as much as other here have.
I have to say the best seemless world map game of the past was Asherons Call. As far as I know no new game has been developed as masterfully as that game in reguards to a seemless world.
Saddly it is so old and dated that I can no longer stand to look upon its graphics and not cringe.
Asheron's Call, Champions Online, Dark Age of Camelot, EVE Online, EverQuest, Lineage 2, Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft.Waiting for SWTOR
Eve online. over 6,000 systems each severall million km squared.
You can go in any pace you want really no limitation, exept to be carefull of player pirates of course.

Except what the EVE fanboys forget to tell you is..... drum roll please.... you have to port between zones, making it not seamless. Not to mention that each zone is a barren wasteland, with a few pirates, a few minerals, and a few stations.
Not just the EVE fanboys, also the WoW fanboys, one of the first posts... . GW2 will be seamless too ^^ Which will come out Q1 2009... still, seamless is seamless
BTW, EVE did a good job with their zones, making you move really slow, giving the impression of big zones, while they're actually... very small.

Well, actually the zones in EVE might be quite empty (it is 'space' afterall.... but the zones are not small....try flying across one manually.... can take quite a while..... and don't think that empty space is useless......it is great to hide out in to avoid people hunting you down with probes and what not.
But its true...all the solar systems are linked by jump gates....so can't really call it a seamless universe.... just a vast one.... but hey, VG chunks...and I consider those seams as well.....

They are small, everything is small, making it look big. Best way to figure this out, is by watching the game client. When i downloaded the trial, i only had to download 500 MB, being the best 'evidence' that the zones are small, but the props are small too. CCP have been quite smart doing it this way, the performance proves it .

'theanimedude''"ljkbhihguigy 'lohkjhsdfg' is right, EVE is a joke, it's not an open world, it may be one server but that's the deception. There's loading all over the place. The only true open world MMO is WWIIOL, you spawn in and that's it, you can travel anywhere in the huge game world; no loading, but even that game is slow to learn for new player's and is specific to WWII buffs. When you start getting into "Open World" thinking, the detail (graphics) go way down and the computer specs needed to run it go way up! That's why no company (except CRS) has successfully done it. It would be nice if other company's would just do it already!!

In VGs case it is just bad coding. But most of the problem go away if you run it on a SSD.
Vanguard is the closest you will get to a non instanced world. However, there are no seamless, non-instanced MMORPGs out right now that I am aware of.

Ultima Online?
Vanguard, WoW, LOTRO (as stated above) are good choices. You may also like Lineage2.

Eve Online and Ultima Online is all I can think of. SWG used to be open world. Unless you count second life and the sims online....which I don't.

It is still seamless.
Vanguard answers this question perfectly.
Tank017, lol...wrong, Vanguard has loading/blocked zones just like all the rest.
