This is why I love PC Gaming so much. If ya don't like most games at first, come back a yr or two later, after the modding community have greatly enhanced it, and more than likely it'll hook ya then! And it'll be a much better game too.
After watching tons of videos on Diablo III, and reading the discussions on which is better Diablo or Torchlight, I started craving a dungeon crawler. I originally loaded up Diablo II, and even with the Median XL mod it just wasn't drawing me in because I've played it so much before. And I couldn't get the hi-rez mod to work, thus being forced to play 800*600 really blows!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, I decided to give Torchlight another go instead. I did play it briefly back when it released {2009 was it?} and I guess I didn't get into it then. I fired it up a few hrs ago, and then I recalled why I quit, the char selection is horrible. The only female is a ranged class that I nornally don't enjoy playing and the other 2 classes are what I'd rather play but both are male and I just can't play a male char if there is a female option. Thus I chose her and began to play.
After reaching level 3 of the mine and playing through an optional dungeon scroll, I went back to town and screwed up my main 2-handed cannon while enchanting...doh {a reare purple with 6+ additional stats} Wiped it clean and lost about 20dps making it far worse than it was and running out of gold. That kinda pissed me off so I went looking for a char editior to see if I could get it back.
Dunno why it had slipped my mind, and began playing without mods, because I knew Torchlight had a modding community. Anywho, after a quick google search, 2-3 hrs later, and many mods installed ~ I'm ready to go dungeon crawling and damn does it look and play better than ever now!!!
I'm now playing with this Hi-Rez texture Mod and many others to tweak the game a little, without blatently cheating: {I'd rather play as originally intended, but with a bunch of enhancing mods and various tweaks that make it all better}
And for the record, I still plan to play D3, but I'll also be getting T2...this has been fun so far!
Comments
Torchlight is really fun. I still play from time to time. Torchlight 2 will be awesome!
I played a while back, after hearing good things for a long time. I was kind of disappointed. While it's good for what it is, I never really enjoy 2D games as much as 3D. And, whether it was the wrong skill, attribute, or equipment choices, the Black Temple levels were hard enough that I stopped having fun playing.
I would have enjoyed T1 a lot more if it had multiplayer. It looks like I was right. :-) I will be purchasing T2 I'm sure. I will possibly be purchasing Path of Exile as well. I'm a bit on the fence about D3...I'm not convinced (yet) that it'll be worth the $60 box price.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Torchlight is a pretty good Diablo-esque, or Roguelike, dungeon crawler. Not very surprising since most of the people who did Torchlight worked on the Diablo series.
The game is easily 30-40 hours long for the first play-thru, and you can continue playing after you've finished the main quest, or decide to create a new character. Torchlight offers 3 main classes, each with their own unique skill trees and equipment.
If you're waiting for Diablo III, Torchlight is a great game. Torchlight 2 is supposedly due out later this year and will add multiplayer along with a bunch of new features. I'm definitely going to pick it up when it comes out.
I must be the only person on the planet that likes Torchlights artstyle.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
No, I like it too. Especially when you hit a monster and it paints the ground red.
No, not the only one. Nice to be able to mod it up if you want something different though.
I bought it when it launched for $5 and barely played it. I'm just not a single-player game person since I started playing multiplayer. I am really looking forward to TL2 though and eventually the MMO I hope.
me three. not to discredit you two (since what i'm about to say seems to be taboo), but i've always liked stylized graphics, and the bright and colorful graphics of t1 fit the mood.
They talk about mods and multiplayer in here:
I recently picked up Torchlight, was itching for a dungeon crawl while waiting for D3, but also I could not go back to d2 either, because of playing that game too much. I was really impressed with torchlight, will for sure buy the 2nd one later on.. probably after ive put 600 hours into d3 lol..
And i have not even modded torchlight yet, so Im sure itll be better when I do. I hope there is a mod that adds difficulty, thats my only complaint about torchlight, its the easiest game I think i have ever played (thats not an mmo atleast).. even on the harder settings late in the game its almost fall asleep easy.. I mean I dont enjoy games that are insane hard either, but I like atleast some challenge, especially in SP games..
I really hope torchlight 2 is a true sequel, and not just torchlight 1 with multiplayer lol
Unfortunately, I've not found any mods that make it more difficult. I too am playing it on Very Hard and while it can get crazy and you can die really fast if you get surrounded or cornered by certain mobs, but most of the time its kinda a cake walk. I don't like insanely impossible difficulty either, nor do I like the perma-death mode, but a fifth or sixth difficulty would have been nice, or at least make Very Hard a bit more very hard...heh
The Champions mod is one you may want to use though, the difficulty isn't increased any, but it does add quite a few more champion mobs everywhere. Before I was only seeing maybe 1 on each lvl if that, and now I'm usully finding 3-5. And they always tend to appear in larger groups of mobs, thus the encounter is a bit more interesting.
Great thanks.. Checking out some top mods right now.. More champions sounds awesome to me, I think my favorite part of this sort of game is the massive amounts of loot to sort through.. Im really interested in that pet mod you spoke of.. I am always too lazy/ forgetful to feed my pet fish at the appropriate times lol
Another mod I added after my OP, is the Loot Overhaul as it makes everything scale better and be more balanced overall. The loot that does drop is much better to play with, and its not a cheat that increases drop rates.
Also the pet mod is simple to use, just fish up anything and permanently change your pet into that, and you keep the fish too, so you can get a bunch of different ones and change up when you get bored of certain ones. {I too always forget to feed my dog, so this is better for me...lol}
When it came out I made several skins for the barbarian and did a ghost tiger pet I even created a killer kitten mod so my tiger was a tiny kitten and changed the sounds to kitten sounds. Nothing like a cute little kitten tearing apart the enemy! I think the name was bagleygames that I used back then.
Played the demo last night and really enjoyed it, it sucks that theres no co-op but as they are releasing the mod tools, i'm sure it wont be long till theres a mod to allow co-op play.
I will be getting the full game soon, and to make it just that bit more worthwhile it even has a 'netbook' graphics setting allowing it to be played on netbooks!
There is a free demo on Steam, which was enough to convince me to keep an eye on it... I love the little pet cat/dog you take with you and the music is very diablo-ish. Oh and it appears there will be a dungeon editor where the players can create their own dungeons.
I'm not sure how it works, but someone was telling me you will be able to buy scrolls that warp you into user created dungeons.
With all the other games out at the moment, I'm holding off buying Torchlight.. But as a single player game it's certainly interesting.. BTW, the witcher is 1/2 price on steam atm, that apparently is a really good single player game.
Also I think I saw a Netbook mode option in the menu, so handy if you have a Netbook.. Suprisingly another game that runs really well on a netbook is Diablo 2
Its a dungeon roaming rpg, its got enough D2 stuff in it that makes it friendly and familiar. Town portals, identify scrolls, the same kinda skill/inventory/spell layout ect but with updated graphics in a kinda cartoony way like Fable or Tf2 and with afew extras like pets plus some things that would be good in D2, like when you hover over a new weapon your equipped ones stats come up along side so you dont have to remember stuff.
So as far as i am concerned its worth the £15 while i am waiting for blizzard to get their asses in gear so i can play D3, it is also apparently going to be expanded into an mmorpg at some point in the future.
I can't say it's challenging exactly, but it does satisfy that RPG dungeon-crawling urge. It's fairly straightforward, and if you've played Diablo II, you won't take long to figure out how to play Torchlight. But it is fun. I've played through it and started new characters, and really enjoy it. It doesn't have a bunch of side-quests or intense storyline like Oblivion or Dragon Age, but it is a sit down and clear your mind / escapist / sheer fun game.
Ugh, who's idea was to put a skillbar into all these games? Skillbar = crap gameplay, you're too busy staring at the skillbar with the shit cooldown timers and flashing squares that sort of looks like a Vegas slot machine, than playing the game.
First time I saw a skillbar was in WOW....wowclone wowclone wowlcone wowclone wowclone.....(trails off)
