"Doesn’t that blend the edges of reality just a little too much? Doesn’t it frighten anyone else that just by playing a videogame, we did what scientists couldn’t and advanced the possible cure of HIV by years? I’m held in the grips of terror by the seeming GOOD news that “pU$$yPWNR69” pretty much ganked the people who dedicate their lives to medical research."
What the scientists did was creating a platform that allowed to delegate the process of finding a certain solution within the solution space for a certain problem to people that have no clue about what they do but in the end are able to produce the correct result.
Isn't that scary as well?
Basically they built a haystack simulator and encouraged ppl to find the needle in it without being paid. You know, because it's quite expensive to force scientists to manually (brute force) look for needles in a haystack.
Now THIS is science!!! And ingenius. Employing the masses for brute-force-searches at no costs. And probably for the better of humanity (you see, it could have been a molecule for a penis enlargement potion or a new stock market derivative certificate nonsense, now aren't we happy now?)
The gamers are not smarter than the scientists, they are just eager enough to look for needles in a haystack.
I agree with that it is a rather clever and manipulative method of getting free workforce to solve brute force problems. I shake my head whenever I see a "gamer" being proud of being used as a guinea pig in an experiment.
Edit: Even though the result of using guinea pigs may lead to useful results, they are still guinea pigs.
I've no problem with this premise. It would be nice to think that all of my squandered hours screwing around in games had some kind of altruistic benefit associated with it, instead of just being a hobby-fied time sink.
Hand eye cordination and visual puzzle solving mechanics > Life study, booksmart dedicated Scientists
I wonder how many scientists FACEPALMED after reading that news LOL.
That would be a valid argument if most of the world's scientific problems were efficiently solvable through immense hand-eye coordination and visual puzzle solving abilty. Unfortunely for your argument, that is not the case. The vast majority of the problems cannot be solved that way.
Oh lighten up, people. Fox News simply reported a story and were one of the first to do so. For such a "terrible, awful" homophobic right wing bastion of ignorance, they bested other outlets with the news that a puzzling AIDS problem had been scientifically solved by gamers. That is what the story is about, not the link to a frickin' news outlet. Keep on topic, please.

I think the point is cnn.com or some other respectable news site would have had the same story. IF FOX was the only place reporting it, you would know its BS anyways.
The humor wasn't as spot on, but trying to spin the cure for aids as a possible bad thing has to be hard, you are to be forgiven this time I think the idea of putting items like this into puzzle game format is a good idea, but can cause some serious issues too like the biological weapon argument. Or eternal living, I mean surely there is a way to stabalize cells so that as your heart cells die, they are replaced with fresh ones so that every seven years or so its like you have a new heart. or any organ, what if they figure out how to repair brain cells? I might be able to be smart again after my extra cirricular activities from high school. Man, that would be nice.

You can't ask me not to take a poke at Fox News whenever an opportunity presents itself. Not unless you've got gamers working on an epigenetics remapping of my sarcastic, leftist, and very mouthy personality.
And you better not!

I apologize to anyone who clicked it, and encourge you burn something in anger.

the solution to your problem is easy: let gamers play games solving problems, unsolvable, AND, let the scientists do what they want with the results.
gamers aren't scientists, they are gamers, and are all powerful in gaming (not kidding there) if you could make a work, or a job like a game, you'd get impressive results in any field.. just think of the people who PAYS to 'play' world of warcraft, whych is a sort of a job in the end... just consider the numbers of the people who manages to get to level 80.. or 85 or whathever the max is now.. it takes.. time, effort, quests, killing mobs, even craftyness at times (even if WoW actually been dumbed down progressively over and over..)
just watch what people does with minecraft, the huge efforts people could do, magnificent marvels things that are, in the end, destined to vanish, like a giant mandala made by a buddhist, is that spiritual in essence? yes, somewhat.
gaming in the end is another reality but a reality that CAN affect this one, heavyly too, you know who are the REAL smart ones in the situation? not the gamers who made the protein, but the scientists who developed the game. how to define realty? how to make things better for life? how to TEACH people history? (europa universalis and civilization games), do what people by thousands of years did.. abstract reality to think clearly, like great mathematicians, what is cartesian space? a thing that doesn't exist where we draw.. a game, a silly thing a concept. like a game. we create a new space, emulate the rules of reality, and MAKE IT HAPPEN!
so... assuming it's a boy... and it would have been made, essentially, by a game... would it be a game boy? teehee. *sigh* i'll go wait out behind the barn for my beating.
Except for the fact that you sent linked me to Fox news (which always makes me want to wipe my hardrive the same way I wipe my hands on my pants leg after touching something icky), thanks for posting this!
I passed over the link and saw fox news, so I didn't click. I had read the story a few days back elsewhere.
After reading more responses, I clicked on the link to see its publication date. I read it on BBC app on the 20th I figure, so FOX may have beat that by a day.
Wasn't FOX news the channel that hosted those two ladies who thought anyone who played games over like 25 or 30 was considered weird? Or was that a differant one?
Yeah, but at least if she sends out a hit squad I get to be annoying as hell right to the end!

What's more concerning is someone doing the same thing, but to create the ultimate biological weapon...
I found this article absolutely hilarious. I was, however, disappointed that Coyote was too busy freaking out about potential positives (Oh come on, he even said he wants to see that troll baby! Don't we all?) to talk about the potential for absolute evil 8|
We as gamers know that particular topic too well. The world part is, we could easily be told what we're playing this game for and still do it. New biological weapon that revitalises the brain to some degree and brings back the dead? What gamer doesn't already expect a zombie apocalypse. If you knew what was being created... wouldn't you help to hasten the arrival of that apocalypse, just for shits and giggles, and to prove how amazing you are with your zombie apocalypse plan of survival?
Coyote isn't wrong hahaha. We are assholes of the highest degree.
MMO's played: Ragnarok Online (For years), WoW (for a few weeks only), Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Eve, Allods, Shattered Galaxy, 9 Dragons, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Star Trek Online (Got someone ELSE to pay for it), Champions Online (Someone else paid), Dofus, Dragonica, LOTRO, DDO and more... A LOT more. I've played good AND bad. The bad didn't last long. :P
