If the collective asshole community can be put to some good use for humanity rather than existing (or non-existing) as useless annoying voids in the universe... then let's reverse asshole polarity for the greater good.

now, this is interesting, yes to zombie apocalipse, gamers are 99% likely to make happen a zombie apocalipse for sure since it's them who could, incase of one, effectively save the world.

not kidding here, I'm thinking seriously to start a zombie apocalipse, but that, of course, will need to wait a bunch of games I want to play first.

this takes me to another conclusion, until there will be games to play that gamers anxiously await, there will be NO zombie apocalipse, I'll be happy playing minecraft at night instead with some zombie horde mod.

so, nongamers, PRAY whathever god you have that gamers will ALWAYS have games to play, or you could wake up in a zombie world.

They can't use it for creating super death viruses or robot babies. It was a specefic application designed to find the most efficient pattern... and present it as a game.

Finding the most efficient pattern and forming it into a game-like interaction isn't too far a stretch. But you can't use this same approach for everything... like designing super viruses.

I really hope what I'm saying is obvious to most of you or you're all retarded.

Oh really, you say that the typical nigh misantropic gamer like me can shape the human genome just by playing a game now?

I get a strong urge to utter something along the lines of "They called me MAD" and stumble off rubbing my hands, cackling. I've always wanted ragemonkies...

    c) Imagine this, a high dollar CEO of a gaming company (insert blizzard,EA etc CEO) decides he wants eternal everlasting life and needs to figure out the genetic mutative formula to do so.

Said CEO has his developers make a game to figure out this formula, then gamers bring this code to life and inadvertantly make the most evil eternal being that brings about the end of life as we know it on this planet.

    d) Yep.. we gamers are awsome :)

Don't give dear old Smed any ideas... Do you want us to be stuck with him forever?... ^^  The idea of crowd sourcing is hardly new.  What makes it more effective is the tools brought to bear on it.

Alright, I got a pretty good laugh out of the pic at the end of the article.

Seriously though, I think this opens up a whole new realm of possibility for solving difficult scientific problems.  I mean if you have a couple hundred eggheads who can't solve a problem, but you can throw it out there to a couple hundred thousand gaming nerds and get it solved in an incredibly short time.... how much faster will we cure diseases and advance technology???  It is like creating a human super computer to crank out solutions in a fraction of the time!!!

    To the OP: ????

If more opportunities become available to help 'mankind' by setting up this kind of  model and using 'brawn' brain power versus a few 'specialized' brains, so what? More power to them.

The models used int his sort of trial are closed and locked. Any 'EUREKAS' are going to be guidelines for solutions which will be studied for a goodly long time, not a 'go buy it in your local pharmacy today'. A solution MIGHT unlock a road to the answer after study by the 'specialized' brains. It is NOT engineering a retro-virus as people are playing.

And the rambling about the artificial insemination (which was the better part of your article). Please mate...

Asshole is right. Mostly for writing an article with that low a quality.

    Which only makes it funnier.

I work with the research community and let me tell you one bit of information...

If you think gamers have an ego and can be assholes, you aint got a clue how some "researchers" can be so full of themselves they need a whole crew behind them to shovel the shit they leave everywhere when they open their mouth.

Agree completely! And I'll bet there's alot more of them out there, with those military-industril-black-budgets (that those cut-happy-congress people won't touch, just like the military in general) that get funding no questions asked.

Yeah, I guess getting good, quality news for a change would upset your diet of left-wing bleeding heart big government liberal crap getting shoved down your throat by all the other news outlets.

The Faux-Noise channel called -quality-?!? Wow guy you need to see a therapist desperately! Oh but wait that's the essence of what wrong-wingers are, insane. You're all literally mentally unbalanced. All your precious beliefs are at their foundation self-contradicting, and just plain untrue. Oh and btw, you'll never be one of the 1%, just thought you should know. As much as you desperately deeply believe you will be, and it's those awful commie-lefty-liberal-regulators that are keeping you down, it's -NOT- going to happen, -EVER- you're not going to be one of the ultra-rich.

I don't see why this is scary at all and it doesn't have to do with "gamers". If you unleash a large number of people to an (essentially) matematical problem, they home in to the solution by using a combination of brute force trial and error and shared knowledge. The setup allows some rapid testing (which is done in parallel) and the brain power of all combined solves the problem at hand. The same happened throughout history as no single individual for example "invented" a dragon boat or how to build a cathedral.

"If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" (and the Giants were other humans, who were themsevles building on top of other humnans before them and so forth).

Then, lets take a look at games. There are several academical and arcane definitions but they all agree that game isn't space marines, zombies and dark elf wizards. A game is a kind of model that works with underlying rules and the player is able to manipulate some parts of the model in order to reach a goal, however to reach the goal, they must understand or "grok" the rules and profoundly understand the patterns. Scientists are gamers. They create models and play around with them to see if their setup behaves like the real thing.

I like the fact that we are slowly coming into a time when people understand that games are so much more and are useful for some much more. This is a very good thing indeed. It could be that the most effective way of human cooperation is through a game (-like) mechanism.

After having read that entire deal.. All I can think to say is that the gaming community isn't exactly special in that area. Any community comprised most of human beings will have it's fair share of assholes.(Fair share being 30-90% of said human beings)

The gaming community just makes it more obvious because it is almost soully on the internet and well.. People tend to forget or just disregard that the others they are interacting with are also people. And proceed to act in ways they would never have the courage to in person.
