Im looking for a new MMO to play since WoW got stupid and rift was just WoW+.
Is there anything out there that REQUIRES you to group to level? somthing thats really tough to make it to max level.
i rember playing EQOA and actualy shouting in chat to find a group to just grind mobs in the world. and if that didnt work you would actualy leave the town and go to where the mobs were and shout there, hoping to find a group that just lost someone.
now i know this sounds terrible to all the young people out there but i kind of miss the challenge of leveling. it took forever to reach max level and i felt like i achieved somthing when i did it... not to mention it kinda weeded out most of the terribads...
sorry about that little walk down memory lane, back on topic now.

I think the lack of response is due to the general trend towards single player. There are few true MMO's these days.
Well, it's not a new game, but FFXI requires partying to max level. Granted, I haven't played in a few years, but what you described pretty much sums up that game.
Vanguard, Ryzom, eq,, thats about all I can think of at the moment
You do pretty much do everything in a group post lvl 20 in FFXI
bah.. oh well, i wonder if theres anything coming out in the future... i hate the road that mmos are going down now.
I feel with you, I aswell miss those days were you had to have a group or risk de-levling, when u actually had to make friends with other players and interact. I'd say find a good gaming comunity and stick to it, that's what i did atleast.
I think youre going to be waiting a looooong time..
unless some indie company comes up with something, its just isnt going to happen.
i think after a few more years of mmos following the warcraft formula and failing we will see somthing better.
warcraft was good when it 1st came out. in fact the best time i have ever had in mmos were in warcraft(pre BC) 40 man raids felt epic and only 2 guilds on my server were in MC, the 1st time we downed Rag it took us 5 days playing at least 6 hours a day just to get to him. when he fell i was on cloud 9 for a week!
Ill still play every mmo that comes out but i doubt ill ever have another experience like that again
Ah...Final Fantasy 11, THE group based mmo...not so much now though.
I have played recently, and a lot has changed in the past 2ish years (I would dare to say more has changed about the game in these past 2 years than its whole lifespan)
Leveling 1-37ish, takes place as a mix of solo with grouping, there is a new feature called, Tomes of Valor which can be done in certain areas in these levels, they are pretty much quests that give XP.
37-75/80- Yea, a large chunk here. People just tend to Tomes of Valor in a zone called, Crawler's Nest. You find 14-21 people, get a couple others to sync your level to and run around as a mob beating on the poor targets. Rinse, Repeat. Now, you slaughter the creatures until a member hits 45, and you then find another syncee and continue until you obtain 75-80...then
Abyssea 75+ This is the area that changed the game into what it is today, all group, all the time. You must have a party in here to level, but the leveling pace is extremely swift. If you play for one 10 hour session, you can probably go from 75-cap.
Well...it isn't what it used to be, you can now easily go from 1-cap in under a month, some old players of FFXi dislike this, others don't. But either way its still a grouping game that has its charm (albeit some were ripped away thanks to Abyssea)
Give it a try though, its only like...10 dollars or so, first months free if I recall correctly as well.
Rohan: blood fued. Not new, but has what you're looking for.
With AAA MMOs all following the heavily instanced grouping and solo leveling theme, it is opening up a wide Indie market in themeparks with retro-styled design.
Unfortunately, this market isn't being tapped. There's a brain connection between "Indie MMO" and "sandbox". Few Indies even consider themepark as a workable genre. Most are trying to create UO clones.
Retro-themepark happens to be what I'm chasing with Wizards and Champions. Will it work? Pfft... who knows. At this point it's still too unfinished to tell (just opened up closed beta).
