It is different than what you play with most other MMORPGs (wow, eq, ffxi ect.) It is set in "modern" time or more like in a modern construct lol. Guns and martial arts (kung fu, karate, and akido) (pistols, dual pistols, submachine guns [mac10], dual submachine guys, rifles, and shotguns).
You get a mission from a call on your cell phone (by pressing N). It first sets you on a set of missions. then after your about lvl 6 you are about at your end of those mission and after that you can choose whatever kind you want. (although, they all seem to include eachother, like assasination missions you have to go and kill a npc get a disk from him, insert it to main frame in the same room, then run to target and eliminate)
You get things like "hyper-jump" and "machine punch".
you can wear just about anything (some things have level limits, usualy because it has high enhancments)
Lots of emotes and moods (moods= stances, you get 1 per level)
LIVE events every month (some times sooner i think)
over all, it is worth a buy and try, especially since SOE bought it because I hear monolith wasn't doing jack with it and leting it die slowly.
It's a game of positives and negatives, like most MMOs.
Positives are:
Graphics (probably the finest ever done, if you have a machine that can handle them) Fun fight system (which not everyone likes btw) Cool setting (Matrix/modern), very good atmosphere, interesting idea of "virtual workd within a wirtual world" Fun community
Negatives are: Repetitive missions (perhaps SOE will help to address this after the switch) Game was released too early and got off on the wrong foot, which hurt subscriber numbers (ie, there should be WAAY more people in MxO right now, a few months after launch, than there are, given the phenomenon of the films and the large fanbase)
On balance, it can be a fun game if you really are into the Matrix backstory, like roleplaying that setting (there are a lot of RPers in MxO) or as a change of pace. It's definitely not the *best* out there, but it can nevertheless be fun if you are of the right mind to enjoy it.
The quests are the most homogenous you will ever see in any MMOG, the game is bugged (painfully), and there is a noticeable shortage of players. The Matrix Online has one redeeming feature: Interlock. Interlock is the most revolutionary combat system that you will get sick of in three days. Once you get bored of it, you will idle at the hardlines for a while, only to hear the epic roleplay. Oh, I think I remember some now. Lets see . . .
Killergrrl: You Zion fools will die. (How original.)
CowbuyJarl: Heh. (Everything said by an MXO rp'er contains only 'Heh.' or calls somebody in another faction a fool.)
Janky: Why are you working for the machines! They are going to gobble us all up! (Obviously because the Machines want to enslave all the humans, and MXO has made her lose faith in humanity.)
Killergrrl: Because you Zionists are fools. Heh. (Yes, they use the word Zionist frequently, most likely because MXO roleplayers don't know the connotation of the actual word.)
Jake32: how the f*** how do I unsubscribe to this s*** (What every sane person wonders about MXO after playing for a few days. You have to call a number. When I called and told the customer service representative that I wanted to unsubscribe because I didn't like the game, he just said, "I know what you mean." in the most knowing and sincere tone I have heard over the telephone. It's like he was really saying, "I feel your pain, brother." Yes, even the cs rep hated the game. Truly spectacular.)
Well, look at the numbers at the poll. This is the MXO forum, where you can expect to see the most fanboys, and it says overwhelmingly no. Want an answer to your question? I have a test that determines surefire if you will like this game. Before you play this game, place your manhood on a cutting board and apply a steak knife to the top. Sever it with a brisk sawing motion. If you enjoy this, you are of the correct disposition to enjoy MXO.
Remember how Matrix Online has such an awesome story and game events? Guess what? Sony bought Matrix Online from WBIE. They fired everyone except for 26 people, including all the precious roleplaying event coordinators. As we speak, they're all on notice. I really, for once, have to thank Sony. After playing it, I prayed earnestly to God that everybody involved would be fired, and it mostly came true. Hurray for Sony!
This is the game that convinced Monolith to quit the MMO development business after its first try. It must be awesome! That's right. The studio itself says they aren't making any more MMO's.
Oh, here's something even better: "The MxO team is very excited about collaborating with SOE, for the team and for the fans. This change melds the experience and wisdom of SOE, a highly established publisher of online games with the existing developers of MxO. This change also opens the option of the Station Access subscription plan to MxO players. For only $21.99 a month, the pass will give access to EverQuest, EverQuest II, Star Wars Galaxies, PlanetSide, and EverQuest Online Adventures (PlayStation 2) as well as MxO. Together this should mean more gaming possibilities for MxO players and fresh new faces coming into the game."
That's right. They're firing most of the team, effectively ending the vision of what MXO should have been, and are probably only acquiring it to add appeal to their Station Access plan, since it costs so little to maintain servers with such a miniscule playerbase.
This is probably the biggest disaster of an MMO ever. Lets look at a few numbers. Matrix Online was released at $40 US retail, and it sold 41k copies in the first month, dropping sharply from there. We'll assume $50 revenue per copy, which is grossly overstated, since much of that goes to sales tax, retailers, and distributors. Lets assume the entire development team numbered fifty people, which is a low estimate, most of which would probably have bachelor's degrees. We'll give a conservative estimate of 60k for their average salaries. We'll then give an even more conservative estimate of 12 months of development. Even with a ridiculously liberal estimate in terms of revenue and expenses, that would mean their total sales have barely payed off the salaries of the development team. Don't even ask about how many subscribers they currently have. This game is dying, no questions asked. Don't buy it.
The glitter wore off, and he realized that Monolith had cheated him out of a concept that he would have loved if it was implemented correctly. Just guessing here, correct me if I'm wrong.
LOL @ kurush, it wouldnt be so funny if 99% of the stuff you said werent lies. Ah well, you can continue to think what you wish, however it's false information. Roleplaying, Linenosie was the unofficial RP server. (becuase they didnt include one) thats where the RP'ing is. what you said probably happened on method or some other server with a small RP community.
Then interlock. You have to be the most boring person ever to hate interlock. Ive yet to see a combat system in any other mmo that compares to MxO's. It's real fighting the way it should be.
thirdly, they offered every single person on the dev team to come back for SOE. some will decline and some will not, its up to them.
The game is dead though. I quit playing but it was probably one of the funnest 3 months ive ever had in all my mmorpg years. The game appealed to me personally because you can actually be somebody. WoW you just another 60 paladin LFG. In MxO everyone has a name and its so much more personal. You actually make friends in MxO, something ive yet to do in others.

I still love the game. But heres the real issue: if you judge MXO based on its vision alone, you have a pretty awesome game, the problem with MXO was that the developers simply could not execute it correctly.
Now SOE has acquired the game, the 'game direction' or vision -- is in SOE's hands, and they took a lot of the Lith developers. So the game is ONLY in a worse situation than it was before. At least before it vision and relatively incompetant developers. Now it has both incompetant developers AND producers. I only foresee 'doom' to come out of it, so the game isn't worth anyones money right now if what im thinking comes to fruition.
If MXO was as polished as say WoW, it'd beat out most if not all of the competition in my eyes, this was always the case -- I just never expected them to let as many bugs and imbalances slide for as long as they have. (I didnt cancel mxo, my account is expired and im not resubbing until the transition is over, Why? Because nothing is going to happen in the interim, do you think developers on 60 days notice really care about working on the game right now? No.)
Originally posted by Kurush The glitter wore off, and he realized that Monolith had cheated him out of a concept that he would have loved if it was implemented correctly. Just guessing here, correct me if I'm wrong.
I read this after I responded to Darquen, its partially correct except the 'glitter' never wore off. See I beta'd for over 6 months, the 'glitter' ran out WAY before that, but I was still happy with the game because I knew the game had problems but I was confident they would be addressed. (The track record of the team during beta was pretty good, and so I assumed things would be resolved fairly quickly after launch)
Letting SOE have and work on this game is not a good thing and having played swg it is ahrd for me to imagine that a company can run a game worse tha SOE. This game definitley has the potential to be a ggreat game and looks interesting but it looks like its going down the tubes...

it is not worth the money. I found the game boring and graphic rather bad. the live events were not worth even having them. try some other game such as WOW or EQ2. It's too bad the game isn't fun to play it could have been successful if it was put together better.
Its true whats beeing said about the missions. The graphics is good AND bad at the same time. Some things look realy good while others suck. The cars are so ugly just to mention one thing. ^^
Wow... I love how people blame SOE for the game's death... if anything SOE might breath a little life into this if nothing else than by adding it to the SOE All Access Pass.
God knows I'd never have tried it as a stand alone MMO... yeesh... it sucked in beta and from everything I hear it sucks now.
So how can SOE possibly hurt a game that has 0 chance of succeeding as it stands on it's own? Hmm?
I'm not an SOE fan but they have an admirable track record with online games. You can bash SWG or EQ or EQ2 all you want but the bottom line is that they're still 3 of the top 10 MMO's in the world.
Actually I started checking these forums to see how the game is since it's going to be added to the All Access Pass. Because I might give it a try once it is. Kinda shocked to see you guys upset about it being owned by SOE. LOL... how they can possibly do any worse than the original developers is beyond me.

I'm a matrix fan and looked very much forward to the game, pre-ordered, yada yada, but quit before beta was done. it was just so mundane and everything you did was in spec with a cookie cutter. since SOE bought it, I claim it officially dead.

Agreed .I am another person that would not have touched MxO but since it been added to all access and people with all access numbers in hundreds of thousands and growing all it needs is a digital download and watch the MxO population at least triple even if all current players leave in protest to SoE taking it over.
If it fails to hold intrest from there i blame the game not SoE.Since SoE will probably add it to all access without doing any major changes and are taking over the developers from the original company to continue work on it.

I just chalk them up as players who are dissilusioned with the game and looking for any reason they can latch onto to "hate" it so they can give up their devotion to it. There's no other way to explain it. SOE can only help this game yet these people are mad about them buying it out?
Just a clue folks: If SOE hadn't bought it it would have died. Period. No more MxO... at least now it has half a chance at surviving and becoming the game you wanted it to be.

Wow, I am amazed that this game is this bad. I really thought this game would boom when it came out. I didnt want to vote so, not to mess up the polls but I cant beleive there isnt more topics listed for this game. Is this game that bad? I was going to try it but didnt know that it was this bad.
Comments
wow~~ I actually voted on yes even though I havent tried the game yet.
I wanted to see the result, and I find out much more ppl voted on "No its not worth your money."
there are 41.7% who said YES!! and 58.3% who said NO!!
16% more ppl said "No it aint worth it!!"
mind if I get any reason why??
PS: just getting many ppl's oppinion before I make a decision. thank you.

"The MxO team is very excited about collaborating with SOE, for the team and for the fans.
Homo what
yea this game sucked
I voted no.
Bugs, bugs and more bugs is how I would describe the game. There is no end-game content, the live events are few and far between.
Don't waste your money.
